SEO Domain Values
-
I always thought that there was no difference in value between a .com and .net, also that hyphens have the same value as the keyphrase without the hyphen. But I have heard Rand lately saying hyphens are spammy - whats the go?
Is CarParts.com better than Car-Parts.com or Car-Parts.net etc?
-
Thanks Marc and Ryan, appreciate the feedback and I share your thoughts. Personally I would go for a dot com anyday too (but that takes deep pockets for a keyphrase dot com), but from an SEO perspective .net or hyphen seems to stack up equally so far..it's Rands recent comments about the Panda update and hyphenated domains that has me wondering what could be happening with hyphens now.
Has anyone done any tests to see if hyphens are spammy? and how many hyphens it takes to be classified as spammy?

Marc offers a solid response. I just want to elaborate a bit more on two of the points he made.
Take any major business....McDonalds, Facebook, IBM, etc...then add .com and you have their corporate website. People are used to finding the best businesses that way. If you obtain the carparts.net site you are guaranteed to have a percentage of customers wind up on the carparts.com site. If that site shows great products or prices on the home page, your customer might never make it to your site. You could lose them to another company. The same idea with hyphenated names. You will lose some business if there is a quality .com site in position.
From a ranking perspective, it makes no difference whether your site is .com or .net or .biz. It also does not matter if your name is hyphenated or not. It is purely a matter of getting people to connect with your site.

I would definitely take carparts.com over car-parts.com and I would definitely take the .com over a .net (however a .com does not automatically trump a .net for rankings). If someone with a .net has a better site, better service and better inbound marketing then they will outrank you.
However .com is the most commonly used tld and having that automatically gives you an advantage. If your car parts business becomes popular and is spreading via word of mouth, it is way more likely that people will search or link to you using a .com rather than a .net.
However don't be put off completely by hyphens, then can still work. car-parts.com is still potentially an ok domain name. I think when Rand refers to spammy domain names he is talking about 2 hyphens plus! Like www.cheap-car-parts-boston.com. Again, please remember that people are more likely to search for and link to a domain without the hyphen, another advantage. It is always annoying to tell people about the hyphen when discussing a domain or website, so try and avoid if possible.

Have I chosen the wrong SEO consultant?
Hi all I've very recently started a small chimney sweeping business for which my friend has designed and built a website, kembersembers.co.uk. Not approaching this from a tech-savvy background I have learnt a lot over the past month but am still an utter novice and as such require some form of help to get me up and running. My main and immediate priority (sweeping season starts soon!) was to have it so when my company name, kembers embers, was googled I would come up at the top of the results. I understand this can take a little time but it has been a month now since I indexed and I have been told my domain authority is 0.1% so I have sought help. I don't want to sign up to a 3/6/12 month contract with a firm so I found an SEO consultant local to me who said they could spend a couple of hours doing the right things to hopefully help jump this initial hurdle. I parted with £120 for this which I deemed to be the going rate and they do/did seem honest and professional enough. Upon meeting the consultant he has since told me that he would like to set the website up under a Wordpress template and has cajouled me into changing my hosting over to one he uses also. He says it will take a couple of hours work to do this (there goes my £120) but without this he would hit walls which would be timely to get past and so will save me money in the long run. Do these kind of suggestions ring an alarm bell to anyone? It didn't seem right that a good SEO couldn't work with what I already have so it leads me to the question is this one to avoid? On a side note I have also received bad advice from friends of friends/family who claim to know SEO but have, for example, put me in the direction of a link scheme through fiverr.com which I understand may have done me more damage than good. I am now more aware of white hat vs black hat and wish to proceed with the development of my online presence in an ethical way growing organically. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

HTTPS, free certificates and Google seo
As we all know, Google decided to give some weight in rankings to encrypted sites. SSL certificate providers are quite a lot out there, but there is also a free alternative (Let’s Encrypt). I've been going over some of these services and compared Godaddy's and the above certificates, and there isn't much of a difference. The question is: using a free certificate would have the same effect as a paid one? I would rather pay for one than be punished for using a free one, but free would be good too.

Can Robots.txt on Root Domain override a Robots.txt on a Sub Domain?
We currently have beta sites on sub-domains of our own domain. We have had issues where people forget to change the Robots.txt and these non-relevant beta sites get indexed by search engines (nightmare). We are going to move all of these beta sites to a new domain that we disallow all in the root of the domain. If we put fully configured Robots.txt on these sub-domains (that are ready to go live and open for crawling by the search engines) is there a way for the Robots.txt in the root domain to override the Robots.txt in these sub-domains? Apologies if this is unclear. I know we can handle this relatively easy by changing the Robots.txt in the sub-domain on going live but due to a few instances where people have forgotten I want to reduce the chance of human error! Cheers, Dave.

Category pages - SEO or deindex?
What is the best thing to do with category pages? Should I deindex them or use SEO on them? I use the Thesis theme and the Wordpress SEO plugin. I am just not sure what to do with category pages. Also will they create duplicate content?

Value in a Bottom Navigation Bar
Hi Guys, I'm trying to decide whether or not to have a bottom navigation bar. I'm thinking of putting a mini site map at the bottom of each page. This mini site map will change depending on the page the user is on. I'm curious on the SEO value this will bring as I understand that there is very little SEO value from links this far down the page but also it could potentially bring the total number of links on that page to over 100. What do you guys think? To have or not to have a bottom navigation bar and why? Thanks, Walid
