Was wondering if you all could point me to case studies reflecting successful linkbuilding campaigns / practices. We'd love to learn more about companies (like Trip Advisor) that have had success in producing great (10x) content and securing many links to increase in ranking.

Hi there! There are a ton of link building case studies around. For starters, I'd suggest scrolling through the Link Building category on the Moz Blog; I'm seeing a handful of case studies just on the first page.

Hi Gyorgy - thanks for your response! Yep, we're doing what you recommend, aiming for smaller quarterly ranking increases and growth in pageview traffic. I changed my question above to reflect that. What we're looking for are case studies of companies that have done it very well to know where and how to maximize our SEO efforts.

#1 ranking on the 1st page in Google for competitive keywords is such a complex task that no case study can justify that link building achieved that. You need a complete SEO strategy to target the 1st page, which includes on-site technical SEO, content marketing, link building, PR, social media and more.
It's better to have realistic goals, rather than 1st ranking in Google. E.g. growing the organic search traffic to the website by 20 or 50 or 100% year-on-year. Growing the assisted organic search conversions by x% year-on-year.

Linkbuild on 'new' or 'old' url?
Hi, I'm trying to rank for a keyword. For the last year and 4 months the rank hasn't changed much. It stays on the 3th page. Within this period the rank has first gone down and then up. Three months ago I started doing linkbuilding for the url the keyword was linked to. This is a main category page. Lately, I don't know when exactly I've discovered that the keyword is ranking for a different url, a product category of these items for 1 brand. I'm wondering if it's wise to shift my focus and start using the 'new' url for linkbuilding? The 'old' url isn't in the top 100 for the keyword. However, if you search for the url in Google, it shows up. And, if I'm advised to shift my focus to the 'new' url, is it advisable to go back and change the backlinks to the 'new' url? A question related to the above one, is there another tool like Open Site Explorer which shows you an overview of the backlinks directing to a deeplink? Like MajestickSEO. I'm trying to get the most extensive overview possible. Thanks in advance.

Root-Domain vs Subdomain Linkbuilding
Hello Mozzers! Couple of days ago I received a request to start optimizing a wordpress website, the domain itself has been around for around 10-12 years so it's it can be considered as one that has real history behind it. The page has been moved from HTML/FLASH to wordpress about 3 - 4 years ago and hasn't been any SEO maintenance on it. The site used to rank for first position with several keywords, but now understandably, it has greatly decreased. My main question would be, that when I've checked the root domain's and the subdomain's metrics with MOZ Open Site Explorer, the sub domain (with "www.") showed a PA 40 and 90 external links while the root domain (without "www.") only has 27 PA and 6 External links. I know that the 301 or server redirects only transfers about 90% of the link juice to the targeted URL but the difference between the 2 results seem way too big for me. What do you think? Is this normal?

During future link building is it more beneficial to target the root domain so the page won't lose that "10%" by redirecting the new link from sub-domain to root domain?

Cost affective way to automate linkbuilding?
I have done manual link submissions to directors and other places in the past. As a business owner i find it extremely tedious and find no time for it at all. I have outsourced it since and seen moderate results. There are systems like linkvana etc which promise to give high pr links, are they good? is there any other way to get niche relevant links automatically & cost affectively? Thanks
