What can cause for a service page to rank in Google's Answer Box?
-
Hello Everyone,
Have recently seen a Google result for "vps hosting" showing service page details in Answer Box.
I would really like to know, what can cause a service page to appear in the Answer Box? Have attached a screenshot of result page.

Thanks Erica. I appreciate your thought on this.
But I think, my question is still unanswered. Because answer box should come up with such content that contains answer to the users question or information that can help user to get answer out of it. But here, it is showing up a product page which does not even answer the users query although it is promoting someone's product in answer box...:-)
Can we consider this as technical bug?

Google can, for the most part, tell the difference between product pages, blogs, etc. With answer boxes, they are looking for the best and easiest answer to the query and they don't really care that it's a services page, not a product page. In most cases, a page that doesn't sell anything is going to be better for Google since they are making any money off that sale and the whole idea of the answer box is that you never leave Google because you got your answer.

Thanks for the quick response Patrick,
But I am already aware of things that can help Google to understand and bring up your content in Answer Box. I would rather like to know, How service page can appear there?
Or Google is not yet able to differentiate between product page content and informative blog content...One more thing, Its not my content in answer box....

Hi there
There are two great resources you should read on answer boxes:
Google Answer Boxes: The What, Why and How (SEW)
Optimizing For The Google Quick Answers Box (SEL)From the looks of things - you structured / formatted your information properly and Google found the content valuable enough to return in results. Consider this a great thing! I would suggest attempting to do the same across other services / products you have to have these other pages pop up in the same way. Have you seen a better CTR or conversion rate because of this?
Very interesting! Congrats!
Patrick

Canonical - unexpected page ranking
We are getting good ranking for an unexpected page, rathewr than the one we were trying to get ranking for. Should we put a canonical on the 'unexpected page' to the page we would like to receive the ranking for - or do we risk losing the ranking? Any suggestions welcomed. Ian

Fresh page versus old page climbing up the rankings.
Hello, I have noticed that if publishe a webpage that google has never seen it ranks right away and usually in a descend position to start with (not great but descend). Usually top 30 to 50 and then over the months it slowly climbs up the rankings. However, if my page has been existing for let's say 3 years and I make changes to it, it takes much longer to climb up the rankings Has someone noticed that too ? and why is that ?

Why am I not ranking in Google, but I am in Yahoo and Bing?
The website in question is: www.stbarthexclusives.com Our keywords are currently ranking for both Bing and Yahoo, but we're not appearing anywhere on Google. The website is being crawled successfully, but we still don't have any results. I hoping somebody can point me in the general right direction to fix/correct this problem. Additionally, there's a decent amount of "rel=canonical tags" on the website. If that helps your evaluation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

How can we improve rankings for category pages
Hi Everyone, I have a dog breeder site I'm working on and I was wondering if I could get some tips and ideas on things to do to help the "category" pages rank better in search engines. Let's say I have "xyz" breed category page which has listings of all dog breeders who offer that particular breed, in this case "xyz". I have certain breeder profile listings which rank higher for those terms that the category page should be ranking for. So I'm guessing Google thinks those breeder profile pages are more relevant for those terms. Especially if well optimized. I know thin content may be my problem here, but one of our competitors dominates the rankings for relevant keywords with no content on their category pages. What do you all suggest?

How long does it take before URL's are removed from Google?
Hello, I recently changed our websites url structures removing the .html at the end. I had about 55 301's setup from the old url to the new. Within a day all the new URL's were listed in Google, but the old .html ones still have not been removed a week later. Is there something I am missing? Or will it just take time for them to get de-indexed? As well, so far the Page Authority hasn't transfered from the old pages to the new, is this typical? Thanks!

Best solution to get mass URl's out the SE's index
Hi, I've got an issue where our web developers have made a mistake on our website by messing up some URL's . Because our site works dynamically IE the URL's generated on a page are relevant to the current URL it ment the problem URL linked out to more problem URL's - effectively replicating an entire website directory under problem URL's - this has caused tens of thousands of URL's in SE's indexes which shouldn't be there. So say for example the problem URL's are like www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/ It seems I can correct this by doing the following: 1/. Use Robots.txt to disallow access to /incorrect-directory/* 2/. 301 the urls like this:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | James77
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/
301 to:
www.mysite.com/correct-directory/folder1/page1/ 3/. 301 URL's to the root correct directory like this:
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page1/
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder1/page2/
www.mysite.com/incorrect-directory/folder2/ 301 to:
www.mysite.com/correct-directory/ Which method do you think is the best solution? - I doubt there is any link juice benifit from 301'ing URL's as there shouldn't be any external links pointing to the wrong URL's.0
