Local SEO - Business name and web address different
-
Howdy Local Experts, I'm hoping you can clear up something for me..
I'm setting up some places for a company that's spread across 5 cities. I am creaitng 5 separate locations for this. The company name is not the same as the website name. All the SEO efforts are for the website name ( the brand ) not the parent company name., so...
1. When creating the places do I enter the business name in "company/organisation" and put the brand name in the web site field? Or is it better for seo to have the brand name here as the company name too?
2. Are all 5 listings more or less going to be the same except for the address and phone numbers? I suppose unique photos etc for each location is better here?
3. When creating citations i am essentially going to be building 5 separate "links", one for each place is that correct. So adding the specific location details into the matching state and city business directories etc?
3. The exact business category doesn't accurately show up in the list. Do i select the closest thing here or create custom categories to better match the business.
Apologies for the lenghty question,
Derek

Thanks Geoff. And thanks to Alan for that link I found a section in that post that answers my question
"And your website URL should obviously match your company’s website. Because with the changes to local listings back in October, your Places Page and organic listing will be combined, and Google needs to figure out which ones match up. So don’t list some microsite, and then wonder why your organic listing isn’t displaying the Google Places info."
So I'll use the brand website as all the SEO is done for that site and i'll want to appear in the blended results nicely. Thanks for your help Geoff, got you on twitter!
And thanks Alan for those links

No worries. With the URL I link to the branch's pages on the main site. I realize this may not be possible on some sites but I think this is better for users (I know I appreciate it as a searcher).
I might be inclined to list the head office under the brand and branches under the company name... it does depend a little on your unique circumstances. Feel free to DM me on Twitter if you want to discuss further @SEM_Freak

Hey, thanks for that Geoff, i appreciate that. Alan, I haven't seen those posts so i'll make sure to check them out (I've got local SEO information overload going on, ha ).
Geoff, on point 1, there's nothing dodgy going on. It's a well known brand name in the industry and all the SEO is for that site whereas the actual company name is different. So I'm wondering whether or not to have that as the company name and then the brand site as the URL.
It's probably not a big deal but just want to make sure I do it the right way

Hi Derek, can I answer your questions in reverse order:
4. With Google Places you have 5 categories. One of these must be from Google's list, the other 4 are free form i.e. you can create your own. I always use all 5 categories and never put the location in the free form categories. For example, "halal meat" not "halal meat london". With the Google one use the closest match. With the others go for the most relevant keywords with high search volume.
3. With the citations, the company name, phone number etc. needs to be the same so you have to treat each branch as unique to get coverage across the directories
2. Make the listing as relevant to the local branch as possible. I personally do not see a need for unique descriptions - I have 600+ branches in my organization so this is simply not practical but with 5 listings I might consider it.
1. Not 100% sure what is going on here but I would use as close to what is in the company logo as possible (i.e. the name used in the company logo)

Domain name in URL
Hi we are targeting local cities across the UK with landing pages for our website. We have built up a few links for https://www.caffeienmarketing.co.uk/bristol/ and recently advised that I should change the URL to https://www.caffeienmarketing.co.uk/marketing-agency-bristol/ and 301 directing the old one 2 questions really: 1. is there any benefit in doing this these days in that this is the main keyword target we have for this page? 2. Do I get 100% benefit for all the links built up on the old page

Dealing with negative SEO
Interested to know people strategies for detecting and mitigating negative SEO. Previously I've used link monitoring tool and kept an eye on all new back links coming in to any page on the site. I have then manually assessed each one again using some tools and actually visiting the website. However, this always leaves me with one dilemma. Regardless of my assessment how do search engines see that link? I run three lists a white list, grey list and blacklist. White list - very relevant and have a lot of authority. I.e. leading industry blogs and forums. Grey list - out of topic/industry, directories Blacklist - sites de-indexed by Google, illegal content or absolute spam (i.e. one page filled with hundreds of links to different domains) Do you have any thoughts? How do you assess if link is bad?

SEO and former site
Hi, my client had a site built and hosted with Avvo but we now shut it down and are using a new server. My concern is that Avvo's internal link structure is causing SEO issues. For example, his site will list for "San Diego Criminal Defense Attorney", but is then removed for no reason. Far worse, while he had the AVVO site, it would never rank at all on Google. He's got great content, and no spammy links. This is the site: www.thesandiegocriminallawyer.com. Any thoughts of what I could do to disavow the AVVO pages that Google still has indexed? Does it matter? Or, is it simply a function of time? Thank you for your help.

Where to find a trusted, SEO strategist for real estate company web site?
I addition to running a small web development company and thus having some background to SEO/inbound marketing, I also own a real estate web site at www.nhfinehomes.com. Last year, I had the site recoded with many SEO improvements in mind. The result was a significant boost in traffic/leads and more pages being indexed. One of the challenge with real estate sites is that all my competitors have the same content (house listings) via the IDX feed so the challenge is to try to shape the pages to be a little different. My question is where do I go from here? I'm not sure where to best focus my efforts for maximum improvement. My biggest competitor has tons more links, some of which are just not realistic for a small firm like mine. Is content creation the next step to push out on a Wordpress blog with better internal linking? In Google Analytics, I see tons of keyword phrases that I have low rankings for and wonder if some optimized content could help boost those? What I would like to find is a TRUSTED, proven consultant with PROVEN real estate SEO experience that could take a look at my site, my competition and honestly tell me what it would take to improve so I can better determine how big a nut this is to crack. I am okay with doing most of the work and have my programmer who can help with some of the technical. I just don't want to take stabs in the dark and waste resources on ineffective or worst, potentially damaging results. So anyone here know where I can find such a strategist? Link

The format for image SEO
Hi there. After looking at a few SEO videos relating to image SEO it seems important to ensure images are SEO'd just as well as pages. I however have a question. If the page is Meta titles the following: Online for Equine | Riding Clothing | Just Togs Latina Ladies Breech And this particular page contains five images which are each variants of this product, how is it best to SEO them? Would you go with the: Online for Equine | Riding Clothing | Just Togs Latina Ladies Breech Front Online for Equine | Riding Clothing | Just Togs Latina Ladies Breech Back Online for Equine | Riding Clothing | Just Togs Latina Ladies Breech Side and so on... Or would this result in keyword stuffing with Google's new over-optimisation rules. Would it be better to rename them so they are all individual? I am considering deleting the images, renaming them on the server as the SEO proof name and then re-uploading them so the Image caption = filename. Am I on the right track? Google WMT Change of address.
Hey all. I've got two domain names. -rt112media.com -route112media.com http://rt112media.com is my main address. The preferred domain. My Google WMT account has 4 sites listed that I am a verified owner on. 1.)rt112media.com 2.)www.rt112media.com 3.)route112media.com 4.)www.route112media.com I recent changed the address in WMT for route112media.com to have the preferred domain rt112media.com. I did this on Nov 23. It is currently saying their is a request and I can withdrawl. Now I'm needing to set the preferred for www.rt112media.com to be rt112media.com but it will not let me because of the pending route112media.com. The problem is I'm getting a ton of errors under my www.rt112media.com diagnostics. I'm not getting any under rt112media.com but I am thinking it is still effecting my page rank. I have the 301's for all set up as a 301 wildcard to rt112media.com. They all redirect to the preferred domain I wan (rt112media.com.) Suggestions?

It would also be appreciated if you have releavent and trusted information on this topic, from blog posts, forums, etc. What are your thoughts on this?
