Link reclamation and many 301 redirect to one URL
-
We have many incoming links to a non existing pages of a sub-domain, which we are planning to take down or redirect to a sub-directory. But we are not ready to loose pagerank or link juice as many links of this sub-domain are referred from different external links. It's going to be double redirect obviously. What is the best thing we can go to reclaim these links without loss of link juice or PR?
Can we redirect all these links to same sub-domain and redirect the same sub-domain to sub-directory? Will this double redirect works?
Or
Can we redirect all these links to same sub-domain and ask visitors to visit sub-directory, manual redirection? How fair to manually redirect visitors?
Any other options?
Thanks,
Satish

Hi,
No, they shouldn't penalise. A lot of companies are bought out by bigger companies and then only have 1 page on a new domain to redirect all of their pages to. I would say that there would be little to no chance of any penalisation.
All the best,

Hi Sean,
My doubt is: If we redirect all incoming links to one page; do Google penalise? What's the best way to reclaim the incoming links pointing to non-existing pages? We have redirected some links and dropped in rankings?
-
Hey Satish,
Historically, updating redirects by amending the URL at their source DID pass on SEO value as each redirect chain caused a link to lose a small portion of equity.
A few weeks ago, Google announced that this is no longer the case and 301 redirects DON'T lose any equity any longer. This update now means that webmasters no longer have to spend time updating links at their source, rendering the practice of outreach pretty much redundant.
You can check out the blog here - https://moz.com/blog/301-redirection-rules-for-seo
In short, I wouldn't bother with any outreaching as it'll provide zero SEO benefit.
All the best,
Sean

Anchor name URLs & anchor blocks: how Google sees them?
Hi guys, Anchor name URLs & anchor blocks: how Google sees them? As far as I know Google hasn't ever recommended anchor name URLs and anchor blocks, mostly when you have one page site, but I have ran into an organic result with an hyper-link to an anchor name URL. anchor name link There is a proper link and there aren't on the page and the code the words "Jump to". It means Google has put those words there and it has also taken the header of that block as anchor text. Why has Google placed that link? The query is "faqs umbrella company", so I thought that Google has seen "faqs umbrella company" like "what is the most popular faq about umbrella companies?" and therefore perhaps the correct answer could be "Is an umbrella company the only option I have? What are the alternatives?". Although, IMHO the most popular FAQ on Umbrella Companies should always be "what is an umbrella company". Unfortunately, that page is only worthy of third Google organic result page and there is no hint of rich snippet or any kind of conversational/KBT optimisation on its source code. no-rich-snippet Someone has any idea of why Google shows that link and if it's something that we can optimise in our pages? Dofollow Links on Press Releases: Good or Bad?
Hello, I know that Google says that you are supposed to make anchored text links nofollow on press releases, but what about just putting the site url itself (example.com) and making it dofollow? Is that okay?

Are links from directories still good practice?
Ok, so I am new at "link building"....which of course I have read furiously on how that philosophy is changed, it's a goal, not so much a process. I am focusing on great content, social sharing, etc. BUT, I see competitors still getting links from some of the directories that I have found listed on Moz as being "good" directories to list in. For example, yelllow pages, manta, ibegin, hot frog, etc. Do I have the terminology totally twisted here? Is it still good practice to get a couple links from these directories. Or is this practice completely the wrong thing to do post Panda & Penquin. Thanks guys!

I can't understand why I am not rank one on SERPS
Hi Guys, I really cannot understand why I am no longer rank 1 on SERPs? My link data shows great weight in comparison to competitors, my on page SEO is good, nice and diverse on the alt text. I know there are a lot of factors that effect SERPs but I believe I have done well but am still not ranking? Have I missed something?

To link or redirect? That is the question.
I have a site that I don't really use any longer but still has some okay rankings. I'd like to take advantage of the links point to that site. Is it better to redirect that site to my new one or to just place a link on the homepage pointing to my new site?

Awarding badges to bloggers as a link-building strategy?
Hello - In the past, doing "Blog awards" and subsequently offering winners' badges with links and anchor text embedded has been something that worked very well for a client. However, we are now noticing that the badging strategy does not seem to be producing the same results for us. We are only reaching out to quality blogs in particular niches - e.g., Top Fashion Blogs, Top Health Blogs, Top Design Blogs, etc. Most blogs that post the badges are in the PageRank 3-5 range. Has anyone else engaged in badging strategy and noticed that the success rates are declining? Could it be that in-text, contextual links are given much more weight than sidebar links? (The badges are most typically posted in bloggers' sidebars). Any insight would be appreciated, thanks!
