Ecommerce New & Refurbished with multiple versions of refurbished
-
I am working with a website that sells new and multiple grades of refurbished power tools
- New
- Refurbished Grade A (top quality refurbished)
- Refurbished Grade C (had a few more scuffs but in perfect working order)
- Refurbished Grade D (no warranty / as is conditions, typically for parts)
How would you create the Products and URL structure?
Since they are all technically different products they have their own sku in magento.
Would you combine them into one URL with different product options? or would you give each product version its own url (New, Grade A, Grade C, Grade D)
Thanks! -- Steven

Thanks so much for your time, information & reply.
I had not thought about schema having a OfferItemCondition option. I think that could help differentiate the pages.
These are all fairly popular tools, stuff you can buy at home depot with prices between $50 & $350.
Here is the site if I can post a link https://bigskytool.com/hitachi-reconditioned-tools.html
As much as separate URLs will be more to manage I think it may be best.
- New vs Refurbished are two definitely different products.
- When we run a sale on a particular Grade, I need a way to link directly to that grade
- When we run adwords and google merchant center, we need a way to filter our just refurbished or just new.
Here is what I am thinking as of now
New - Unique URL with self referencing canonical URL.
Schema of OfferItemCondition of NewGrade A - Unique URL with self referencing canonical URL
Schema of OfferItemCondition of RefurbishedGrace C - Unique URL with canonical URL pointing to Grade A
Schema of OfferItemCondition of RefurbishedGrace D - Unique URL with canonical URL pointing to Grade A
Schema of OfferItemCondition of RefurbishedThis would make the distinction between New and Refurbished Products
Then in Refurbished products there will be duplicate content but hopefully the canonical URLS should help.
Ideally Google would rank the New Page for when someone searches for the product and Google would rank the "Grade A" product page when they search for the Refurbished version.
I will essentially have 4 pages with very similar content, hopefully the canonical URLs and Item OfferCondition will help the search engines know, which (two) versions of the page I think is important.
I will also have prominent links that show the different grades with the different prices in the product description to help with human usability.
Any flaws with this logic? or better approaches?
Amazon sort of gets into this with books, there is one book but it can come in multiple formats Paperback, Hardcover, Kindle, Audible, AudioCD
Thanks! -- Steven

Hi Steve,
This is a great question. I think it depends entirely on how much search volume there is surrounding the other variants for "refurbished" parts. If there's a reasonable amount, I'd recommend giving them their own URLs. I know this is harder because if they are substantively similar, producing unique content could be more difficult. I believe you can use schema.org markup to indicate "condition" [http://schema.org/OfferItemCondition] - This would help search engines understand that these items are unique from each other in important ways.
As long as it was clear to both humans and search engines that these power tools are uniquely different from each other in some way, I'd opt for the separate URLs and optimize them for long-tail terms.
If the only difference were color, say a power tool came in red or black, then maybe I would consider making these attributes that didn't necessarily influence the URL. Again there would be the caveat of search volume. If there was significant search volume for different colors, than having separate URLs and schema markup for each would be the way to go.
This is a similar type of question eCommerce site merchandisers (and SEOs!) ask themselves when strategizing how to handle faceted navigation. What combinations of facets warrant their own URLs and which ones do not? I would let search demand guide your answer.

Ranking Issue for New Site
Hi all, I have got a specific SEO challenge. 6 months ago, we started to build an eCommerce site (located in the UK). In order to speed up the site launch, we copied the entire site over from an existing site based in Ireland. Now, the new UK site has been running for 5 months. Google has indexed many pages, which is good, but we can't rank high (position: between 20-30 for most pages). We thought it was because of content duplication in spite of different regions. So we tried to optimize the pages for the UK site to make them more UK-related and avoid content duplication. I've also used schema to tell google it's a UK-based site and set up Google my business and got more local citations. Besides, If you could give me any suggestions, it'd be perfect.

Minimum amount of content for Ecommerce pages?
Hi Guys, Currently optimizing my e-commerce store which currently has around 100 words of content on average for each category page. Based on this study by Backlinko the more content the better: http://backlinko.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/02_Content-Total-Word-Count_line.png Would you say this is true for e-commerce pages, for example, a page like this: http://www.theiconic.com.au/yoga-pants/ What benefits would you receive with adding more content? Is it basically more content, leads to more potential long-tail opportunity and more organic traffic? Assuming the content is solid and not built just for SEO reasons. Cheers.

Multiple product hierarchies (creation of refurbished products section) - best solution?
Hi all, I'm in discussion with a client who wishes to introduce a 'refurbished' products section to their website. This section will effectively replicate the structure of the 'brand new' products section. Unusually the key difference will be the fact that the 'refurbished' products section will feature significantly more products than the 'brand new' section, in the region of four times as many. As a guide the website currently stocks approximately 200 products across 8 core product areas. We have recommended that the two sections should be combined in order to prevent the creation of two separate product hierarchies. With 'brand new' / 'refurbished' products segmented via filter functionality. However the client is set on having two separate product hierarchies, i.e. a 'refurbished' section within a completely separate directory. Just wanted to crowd source opinion, in additionally to gaining insight if anyone has experience of a similar request. What solution did you implement? My feeling is that there is a high likelihood over time of the 'refurbished' section growing in authority and starting to outrank the 'brand new' products section. Not to mention a key missed opportunity to group and build authority / content within one product hierarchy. All thoughts and opinions much appreciated!

English Site ADDING Spanish Version
I have an English wordpress site that I'd like to duplicate and translate in Spanish...does anyone recommend using a subdomain (espanol.xyz.com) or something like a .com/es/ format? I'm also interested in any SEO issues that might arise and want to keep SEO in mind while building this segment of the site. Any other tips or things to think of?

Read More & SEO
I have just had my site redesigned. The site was designed with only important facts bullets at the top of the page and all other information is below in the read more section that expands when clicked. I am wondering if I need to have this information in the read more section visible to the customer or if having the majority of the text in the read more is OK? and how it will effect rankings having it this way? I have had spots #1 &2 on Google for my keywords- until the site was redesigned...wondering if this was part of the reason. I have moved some of the text up to be visible on some of the pages - but it makes the site look cramped - and competes with the ease of use the site design Any insight on this is appreciated.

Multiple Google Places Listings?
Hi everyone. While I have read answers regarding this on Mike Blumenthal's blog, I have not been able to get an exact clarification on having multiple Google Places listings. According to Mike Blumethal, Google accepts multiple listings in the Places area for specific industries. e.g. One listing for a Dental office, one listing for EACH dentist. This could include a separate website for each. If this is the case, how far away are we from having one maxed out business owning muiiple positions in the local listing space in the search engines. specifically Google? I would love a good explanation of what is and isn't allowed to have multiple listings.
