HTTPS and HTTP both exist! How to handle?
-
I was asked to do some SEO work for a website and learned that just 6 weeks ago, their webmaster added an HTTPS instance of the site. Their backlinks all point to HTTP and the 6 pages that are already ranking are all on the HTTP site. I'm afraid to rock the boat by redirecting the site from HTTP to HTTPS as we may lose rank.
What are some suggestions? If I just pull down the HTTPS will that hurt us? Would you just go ahead and redirect it? IF so, would you do each page individually or as a whole?

Hey there,
the sooner you'll redirect HTTP to HTTPS the better. You are going to have more backlinks and rankings in time so it would be definitely harder in the future.
Also, try to convince the 6 websites which already point to HTTP to change their links to HTTPS.
And then, of course, redirect each page individually, as you said.
Hope it helps, Martin

Hi,
There should be no effect as long as your http pages 301 redirect to their https equivalents. For second part of your question see below thread.

Thanks

How to best handle search landing pages - that don't exist
I have quite a bit of blog information that can be searched, which results in "pages" that don't actually live anywhere. These are scanned by Moz and appear as poor page quality for speed, etc. How do I get the service to either ignore all of these or is there a way to treat them as a real page with content? As there are quite a few generated over time, I'd like to be able to capture them somehow. Thanks.

My site auto redirects http to https. This is causing redirect chains. What can I do?
I noticed that Moz flags a lot of redirect chain issues on my site. I realized that this is mostly because the site automatically redirects http to https, and when I create a new URL (when a URL changes, for example) it is automatically flagged as a chain. Example: http://www.example-link Auto directs to: https://www.example-link Which is then redirected to: https://www.example-link-changed (when the address actually changes) I don't seem to have any control over changing where the initial http redirect goes. Any advice on fixing this problem?

How to handle outdated, unoptimized blog posts receiving little or zero traffic?
I'm doing some overdue spring cleaning on our WP blog. Some big visual updates are in the works, but currently I'm working on pruning and updating some poopy and outdated content. Many of the older posts weren't written with SEO in mind and were posted to the blog merely as an extension of our monthly enewsletter. Here's an example: http://pq.systems/2FkQyVG This post needs a lot of work to meet our new standards. The content is thin, readability is weak, kw targetting is non-existant, the visuals suck, zero links, and the charting software mentioned has since been replaced with another solution that we are currently promoting. There are quite a few other posts with similar issues... Any thoughts on the best way to handle these posts? From poking around similar Q&A threads, it seems my options are: Create new updated post, remove old post, 301 redirect from old to new Create new updated post, add blurb & link pointing to new post at the top of old post Edit/update old post, add "This post was updated....etc" blurb to top of old post Any other options or opinions on which solution I should go with would be much appreciated!

Google indexing https insted of http pages
Hi!
On-Page Optimization | | ovieira
First of all i have a Wordpress portuguese languagem website (**http://**bit.ly/TGjpVx). For a while, for security pourposes, i had a SSL certificate installed on my website but i didn't renew it, for a few months now. I didn't have any special https page. All pages responded using http or https. My problem is that it seems that Google still indexes some o my webpages with https and not http, so when people click on it they get a bad cached page. No good for SEO, i think. What can i do about this? I only want Google, and other serach engines, to index my clean http pages (about 70 pages). Thanks,
