DO outbound links to manufacture specs, pdfs help or hurt SEO?
-
I am creating an e-commerce site.
All the products have product certification documents/images, PDF docs for instructions, manufacture specs, etc.
Should I host all this content or simply link to the original documents and content? What is the best for SEO?
Thank you,
-
Thanks for the response.
Sorry for the dumb questions -- If I have a bunch of PDF's, why is this useful?
Does this allow Google to crawl them and I get the SEO juice?

Can google crawl attachments for keywords? (PDFs, photos, etc)
Lots of manufactures only host links to PDF.
If possible I want to either copy and paste that content on my site so it gets crawled and I get the SEO juice. Will this work?

The line is in the ratio of your duplicate content to unique content. I don't know of any hard and fast ratio rule but it is primarily the unique content that will be most helpful as you to build your site's authority against your keyword competitors.
-
Assuming this is OK with suppliers is there any tactics to take that content and get it to help my SEO?
Eg. Copy the PDF words, put it on my own PDF branding and re upload or just take that offline content and paste into my page?
Where is the line between duplicate and unique content?
Thank you!

Assuming it's useful and relevant Google will like that and so will your users

You could also host PDFs as embeds. This snippet I found the other day deemed pretty useful:
Example fallback content: This browser does not support PDFs. Please download the PDF to view it: Download PDF.

I agree with all of Chris's suggestions.
In some situations, you will see that the information for a few popular products is being heavily used. In those situations it may be helpful to create your own content.
You may have a situations where your product knowledge, customer knowledge, content creating ability, ambition, and willingness to invest in your website greatly exceeds that of the manufacturer and all other competitors. In these situations, you have the opportunity to create the best site on the web for a consumer topic or product line.
The investment above is most valuable when you have a product with broad appeal and where its use requires special knowledge or skill that you have the ability to present on a website. It is also important to consider the expected consumer lifetime of the product (not the item), because that determines if you are producing content that will be of temporary or evergreen value.

Hi James,
It may help your site as far as engagement numbers if your visitors frequent those documents but the fact that it's duplicate won't be lost on Google. If you think it will benefit visitors by having it on your site, you could canonicalize it so at least it references the original from your site.

What do you tell customers about outbound links?
Do you report outbound link profiles in an SEO audit? If so, what tools do you use to get outbound links? Moz doesn't seem to include this info in its crawl. What do you tell customers about the SEO value of outbound links? Thanks in advance for your SEO wisdom!

Tumblr links
I have several Tumblr blogs. Created when Tumblr links were worth more, and now primarily for my amusement. But, I'd like to get whatever link juice I can out of them. I thought only the footer links were do follow, but when I check Moz it's showing all links as do follow. Any idea which is true?

New link explorer
I was checking this new tool which is really cool by the way and was wondering if I can outrank big guys with just content. I have a Domain authority of 28 with a spam score of 28 % Can I outrank with amazing content a site that hase a domain authority of 50 and a spam score of 1 % ? Should I ask for all my bad links to be removed so that my spam score goes down or doesn't it matter anymore those days and what matters is good content, link just don't count anymore ? Thank you,

SEO - Massive duplication of same page, but different link.
Hi!
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | jennisprints
I'm dealing with a big client who's site has a big (approx. 39 000) duplication of the "same" page (same content) but each page has a different URL. The duplicated page is a "become a member"-page.
I've checked the backlinks in Google Search Console and there are no sites linking to any of the duplicated pages.
The developers have no clue where or how the pages came to be duplicated, but my guess is that every time a new customer sets up an account the page becomes duplicated. The customer want us to just remove the pages and sort out the duplication, but removing the pages might cause a big drop in back links/traffic and what not. I would much rather redirect the duplicated pages to the original page, but given that there are 39 000 pages it might mess with the site speed. Looking for ideas and suggestions of what the next step should be, remove or redirect.
Thanks so much!0 -
Can Bundling Products Help eCommerce SEO?
We currently have over 13,000 products on our site. SeoMoz reports many duplicate pages, which are items that are very similar (different size, application, sku, etc.). Would it be prudent to create a bundled product that has one page, one description, a set of images and a table with add to cart buttons for all of the different products on that page? (called a bundled product in Magento). Then create 301 redirects from all of the individual pages and categories to the relevant new bundled product.

Help diagnosing a complex SEO issue
Good evening SEOMoz. A series events, in close succession are making it somewhat difficult for me to diagnose a cause of fluctuations in traffic. Please excuse some of the stupid moves I made, but desperation got the better of me. One of my most beloved websites was hit by Panda on January 18th. Pretty sure it was due to a CMS bug that is now fixed. The website site started to show great signs of recovery from April 19th - Panda 3.5. I'm going to be as explicit as possible with the traffic for the days that follow. Traffic was stable previously. April 20th +10%. April 21st +5%. April 22nd +5%. (half way recovered, also the first real fluctuation since the site was hit in Jan). Due to the looming over-optimisation penalty, on the 22nd I changed the titles to unoptimise them a little. (fear is a dangerous thing at times). April 23rd -10%. April 24th -10% April 25th onwards, pretty much levelled out. The websites I've seen hit by Penguin, lost around 40% of their traffic, very steeply on 24th and 25th April. So the drops aren't in keeping with my experience of Penguin. But they do coincide perfectly with the massive site-wide title change. I've haven't read anything definitive about a penalty for changing titles too often, but for obvious reasons, it makes sense. The drop seems terribly soon after changing titles, but the site is very heavily indexed. It's also worth mentioning that I did changed the titles BACK, incase it was purely the fact the titles had been slightly de-optimised, that caused the drop. I waited until May 5th. This had no positive nor negative effect. It's a lot to take in but I'd love to hear your thoughts. I'm feeling a little bamboozled looking at all the figures. There was of course the above the fold update on the 19th Jan, but lets ignore that as we've only ever had a max 1 ad per page, most pages have none.

Joomla Plugins for SEO
Any input on which Joomla plugins could help us to facilitate the SEO on a client's site? Wordpress has some simple all-in-ones but we're not as familiar with Joomla and it doesn't look like that's the case. Thanks!

Aside from creative link bait, what's a solid link building strategy involve?
All things considered, directories, blogs, articles, press releases, forums, social profiles, student discount pages, etc, what do you consider to be a strong, phased, link building strategy? I'm talking beyond natural/organic link bait, since many larger accounts will not allow you to add content to their website or take 6 months to approve a content strategy. I've got my own list, but would love to hear what the community considers to be a strong, structured, timeline-based strategy for link building.
