Need your Opinion on Bounce Rate Analysis
-
I'm currently doing a bounce rate analysis for our resource pages. These are information article pages - mix of plain texts and those containing either images, infographics, videos or even podcasts.
By the way, I did search for bounce rate topics here, but I felt like i still need to post this. Unless I've overlooked a similar post, my apologies.
It's a first for me to do an in-depth BR analysis, so I need to clarify few things.
- What is a good or bad range bounce rate? Is there even a range comparison? Like when can you say a bounce rate is high for an information type page? I've read some stuff online but they're confusing.
- What other Analytics factors should I consider looking at together with bounce rate?
- For pages (which purposely educate visitors) with high bounce rate, can you guys suggest tips to improve it?
I would appreciate and value any advise. Thanks a lot!

Dedicate some time to exclude SPAM referral links from your bounce rate analysis. SPAM links are notorious for providing skewed data in these areas.
I would also look into average time on page and pages per visit depending on source/medium.

Thanks Kevin. This is helpful too.

Bounce rates will greatly vary based on industry/type of sites. Is a high bounce rate good or bad? Depends. If you objective of your marketing is to drive phone calls, a page may have a high bounce rate if the user found the correct content and calls you. So I would recommend do some additional data analysis via session recordings and phone tracking and analyze what the visitors do.
FYI, here some stats from custommedialabs:
- 20% – 45% for e-commerce and retail websites
- 25% – 55% for B2B websites
- 30% – 55% for lead generation websites
- 35% – 60% for non-ecommerce content websites
- 60% – 90% for landing pages
- 65% – 90% for dictionaries, portals, blogs and generally websites that revolve around news and events
Good luck!

Thanks Popidev. Will take a look

I found this recent Whiteboard Friday on bounce rates super interesting. Might be of some relevance.

Has GA changed how it calculates bounce rate?
Updated website from Magento backend to Wordpress and since the redeploy, my bounce rate has dropped from 40% to 4%. I did check to see if there was duplicate GA tracking code but only one call. I checked reports under "visitor flow" and one page visits seem inline with the previous bounce rate. Weird. Never experienced this before.

Reach local driving up bounce rate...
Hi all! I have a new client that I did a website for. After a month, looking at the analytics, it shows that while the site visits from reach local is more than the organic google, the reachlocal traffic is bouncing, causing the overall website bounce rate to skyrocket. Organic bounce rate is 47.62% and the reachlocal is at 84.25% driving the overall bounce rate to 68! Duration of the reachlocal traffic is at :56 vs 3:41 for organic. (SEE ATTACHED IMAGE) I'm guessing this all means that the reachlocal traffic is obviously not quality, so does that mean they are targeting non-relevant keywords? I don't have any experience dealing with reachlocal. Should I recommend my client to drop it? And if so, how to stop that traffic from coming to the site? I'm sure this is an easy one for you pros! Thanks! ~BB MUW959h.jpg

Bounce Rates - How would you deal with this scenario?
Greetings! I actually don't have a definitive answer to this so wish to throw it out to the community for thoughts and feedback. I have a client who we shall call "Site 1", but they also have a job board, we shall call "Site 2". A product of their own success, they have a high bounce rate with visitors landing on Site 1, seeing a job they want to apply for and bouncing straight off to Site 2. The problem is that this is resulting in Google seeing some of these pages as having bounce rates of 80% to 100%, based on this formula: Bounce rate = total number of visits viewing only one page / total number of visits Now, I hate anything black hat or grey hat so wish to know how you would deal with this... If the results from Site 2 were displayed in a new framed page on Site 1, would this still be classed as a bounce? If when they click on a job on Site 1, they were taken to an intermediate page on Site 1 saying "Thank you, you are being redirected to your chosen job" for 5 seconds before being taken to Site 2, would this be classed as a bounce? Perhaps the job they wish to apply for 'pulled' from Site 2 and actually displayed in a new page on Site 1 would be a better way to go? I think that option 1 might work, sure that number 3 would but not so sure about number 2, but look forward to your comments and thoughts. Regards, Andy
