More than 100 internal links from a page
-
Hi, we have been developing our new site and improving the internal linking for 2 reasons, 1 to improve spidering and 2 to up sell more to customers. The error reports from SEOMoz are showing our biggest problem is too many internal links from 2000+ pages. How much of an impact does it have by having say 180 internal links compared to say 99 on a page?
Our website has been moving up the SERPs so should i worry about it or should I ignore the warnings and continue with the menu system and internal linking we have in place already?
Thanks

Yes, I can't say I saw dramatic changes in the rankings after I got the internal links beneath the "esoteric" 100.

I've worked for a website with 100+ internal links on most of its pages. In 4 years, the bot never got confused.
At one point it looked ridiculous. After the owners refused to remove the footer links and other duplicate ones I went ahead with nofollow attribute on the links I consider to have close to no value for users and search engines.
We impelemnted nofollow by marking all internal links with a unique ID. E.g if a link to the live chat form the footer of the site got ID #4112 on the home page, it had the same ID through the rest of the pages. I then got all the ID I want to have the attribute and gave them back to the developers. This approach had one great advantage - it minimized the chance of human error to only me restricting the wrong link. Nothing was lost in translation.

I wouldn't worry about it, as long as you don't have a huge amount, I wouldn't expect this to make much of a difference either way.
I'd recommend focusing on other aspects of on-page optimisation and building really good links.

Cool good idea, the problem I have is when we suggest products that maybe similar, not sure if we can automatically add nofllow tags, also like you I've never been to kean on it. I'm hoping that google will see we are linking to relevant pages because they are relevant and not because its SEO driven. The links on most pages are different so some pages have less than 90 while other have 200+ (the further u drill into the site the more links naturally appear). What I have not seen is the pages with 200 links doing any worse or better than the ones with 100.

One of my clients has the same problem, so I looked at some of the biggest websites within the industry, and they also share the same issue and have more than 200 internal links on their homepage and the majority of their internal pages.
I would say that it wouldn't have a massive impact upon your rankings or PA if you were to reduce the amount of internal links, but you could use the nofollow tag tactically to do so. For example: if you have a link to a page within your top navigation, you could nofollow a link to the same page if it's also featured within your footer or sidebar.
This is just an example. I wouldn't recommend doing this, but it's an easy way around the problem if you're keen to resolve it and it won't have an impact upon usability.

How many internal links should a (sub-)page maximal have?
What would the effect of having too much be? Does google stop crawling after a number and punish more internal links?

Search Pages outranking Product Pages
A lot of the results seen in the search engines for our site are pages from our search results on our site, i.e. Widgets | Search Results This has happened over time and wasn't intentional, but in many cases we see our search results pages appearing over our actual product pages in search, which isn't ideal. Simply blocking indexing of these pages via robots wouldn't be ideal, at least all at once as we would have that period of time where those Search Results pages would be offline and our product pages would still be at the back of ranking. Any ideas on a strategy to replace these Search Results with the actual products in a way that won't hurt us too bad during the transition? Or a way to make the actual product pages rank above the search results? Currently, it is often the opposite. Thanks! Craig

Unable to see internal link numbers on Opensiteexplorer - Need help
I'm Anuj, a regular user of SEOMOZ. I need some SEO guidance from SEO experts. I'm trying to optimize a webstore for few keywords. I am facing some issues on SEO I was using https all over the webstore and was advised by the community members to not have https through out the site (Due to various reasons). The internal links were not showing up in opensiteexplorer & Google Webmaster Tools too when the site was with https (They were just showing 1 or 2). After changing the pages from https to http, I'm now able to see all the internal links of my website on GWT. Unfortunately, the internal link count on opensiteexplorer shows a very small fraction when compared to the # of internal links shown on GWT. The link update from Opensiteexplorer was on 27th FEB 2013. I had done the https to http (for all pages) somewhere between 17-24th of JANUARY 2013. I wanted to know if I have missed something as I am unable to see those numbers on Opensiteexplorer or will it take time for opensiteexplorer to show the internal link numbers ?

Why doe SEOmoz include my categories and subcategories when counting on page links?
Hi everyone, I am new to SEOMOZ, but it looks like really good program. I ran a report last week, and SEOMOZ says that out of 10001 pages, I hve a total of 9995 warnings. When I take a look at the breakdown, it says I have too many on page links. I removed the links from the bottom of each page, but my on page links are still over 100. Does this mean that I will have to get rid of categories and sub-categories in the navigation bar? Thanks, Don

SEO Value of Within-Page Links vs. Separate Pages
Title says it all. Assuming that you're talking about similar content (let's say, widgets), which is better: using within-page links for variations or using separate pages? I.e., do we have a widget page and then do in-page links to describe green, blue, and red widgets, or separate pages for each type of widget? In-page pro: more content on a single page, thus more keywords, key phrases, and general appearance of real content. In-page con: Jakob Neilsen says they're confusing. Also, for SEO, you only get one page title, rather than a separate page title for each. My personal bias is for in-page, since I hate creating dozens of short pages for what could be on one page, but my suspicion is that separate pages are better for SEO.
