Bounce rates and TOS: Most trustworthy global benchmarks
-
Hi all,
I'm trying to write a blog post about the human attention span and the likelihood of people bouncing on websites.
After doing some research I'm surprised about how many 'outdated' numbers are circulating: many articles refer to studies from '12 or '14. Like this:
https://time.com/12933/what-you-think-you-know-about-the-web-is-wrong/Do you guys have specific sources you find most trustworthy/timely when it comes to topics like global Time On Site averages and Bounce Rates?
Would be much appreciated, thank you,

Hey Raoul
Just gonna do a quick Google and see what I can find from 2019, articles from sites which I have previously felt had a good say on one or two topics
https://www.bigcommerce.co.uk/blog/bounce-rates/#what-is-a-bounce-rate-on-an-ecommerce-website
The above was posted in 2019. Even though the post date isn't declared on the front-end, it is declared in the schema which you can review the results for here. Check the 'datePublished' entry under 'Article'. This is a more general post on bounce rates, but includes some sample stats from a few studies (how email segmentation affected bounce rates, how having a second review on a page instead of just one affected bounce rates). It might not have everything you need but if you give it a proper read, it might be a component that could help to build your story. I have read a few posts by Bigcommerce, I actually think they're usually pretty neat
https://conversionxl.com/guides/bounce-rate/benchmarks/
This one comes from a source I haven't read previously, so you'll have to evaluate how legitimate you think this content is. It's recent but not super recent, having been published in 2017. Again I had to detect this through schema (here). Look for 'datePublished' under 'WebPage'. It may be a bit more useful to you, as it's a series of bounce-rate benchmarks split by various dimensions (channel, site type etc)
http://www.fonemedia.co.uk/blog---mobile-bounce-rates.html
Posted on 18th Feb 2019. Short and sweet, but again I've never heard of these guys so I don't know how good / accurate the info is. Their main claim is that "The bounce rate on mobile is 28% higher than desktop". I would be wary, nothing is cited, there's no images of graphs, charts or data-sets. No citations are given
https://www.crazyegg.com/blog/why-users-leave-a-website/
Posted Feb 2019. These guys I do trust. They produce a pretty cool heat-mapping analytics solution for websites, so that you can see a heatmap of (aggregate) user mouse movements and clicks. Lots of people use CrazyEgg and they probably wouldn't go making outrageous claims without doing some ground-work. They give a break-down of different bounce-rates by site type, maybe you could aggregate their findings with the ones from Bigcommerce and ConversionXL - adding your own thoughts. What I like here is the focus on time rather than the actual percentage bounce-rate ("The 15 Second Rule")
https://www.gorocketfuel.com/the-rocket-blog/whats-the-average-bounce-rate-in-google-analytics/
I think you found this one too. It's neat, but it doesn't specify a publish date on-page or in the schema. Judging by the site's blog feed, the post was written 2014 or earlier. The content mentions a sample of data from 2013, so we can say that by now this is probably out of date (what a shame!)
https://golocalinteractive.com/blog/industry-news/marketing-in-the-age-of-short-attention-spans/
From June 2019. A really thorough, well presented study which is easy to read. This plays more to your short attention spans angle. I don't know these guys, but that's okay because they cite (most of) their claims including a very interesting research paper from Akamai who I am sure many are aware of (which itself was written in 2017, not too long ago)
... that's all I have time for right now! Hope that helps

Blog Post SEO - Bounce Rate & Layout
Mozzers, I wrote the following blog post about Microsoft’s current offer to receive $100 free in bing ads. http://www.cildermansolutions.com/blog/free-bing-ads-coupon-for-2017-get-100-in-free-advertising-credits I noticed that the bounce rate on the post is higher than i was expecting; I am wondering if this is because I put the eligibility rules for collecting the ads coupon in the 2nd paragraph...and people are just seeing that right away and bouncing. I obviously don’t want to lie or trick readers, but i am wondering if the community has any idea/suggestions. Thanks, Matt

Bounce Rate: Would GA consider a user interacting with a single page (i.e expanding text), before exiting a bounce?
Hey guys, I have done a ton of research regarding bounce rates, yet I cannot seem to find the answer I'm after. Senario: BoIf a user follows a link and lands on a product results page with various sets of filters and an "apply" button, looks through the site, adjusts the filter functions (without changing the url structure) and exists without going to another page - would that qualify as a bounce in Google Analytics? For example: If I click 'details' to see expandable text on a results page ( /credit-cards). The dynamic url I'm talking about is below: https://masii.co.th/thai-en/credit-card/compare-buy?category=shopping%2Ccashback%2Cair_miles%2Cassistance%2Cdining%2Cpetrol%2Crewards&income=30000

90% website bounce rate - What am I doing wrong?
(Also not getting any comments on any of my articles) Hi, everyone! I'm very new to the community here, but I'm honestly at my wits end. I've run an affiliate marketing site for about 8 months now, and I've consistently had issues with bounce rate. I've tried to look into it myself, but I can't seem to determine what the issue is. A couple things, though - One, a lot of my traffic currently goes to two articles which don't actually have any intent to convert. I didn't even write those articles for the sake of conversion, they were just for fun and I thought they'd be useful to people who stumbled across them. So that could be one reason my bounce rate is so high, but I'm not sure.Anyway, I've asked a LOT of people in the past (I was part of an affiliate marketing community at one point - I asked the founders, friends, strangers, and other successful affiliate marketers about this) if there's anything wrong with my content, etc. The answer has always been no, that it's good. I'm sorry. My thoughts are a bit scatterbrained here. I just don't know what to do here. If all my content for 8 months has just utterly sucked, I'd feel pretty demotivated, but at least I could know what to improve going forward. That's what I need help with from you guys. Here's my website, though I'm not sure if links are allowed: http://cheapgamesguru.com/ My latest articles aren't really getting any traffic at all yet, so I'm not really concerned with them. Specifically, ignore my Future of the HTC Vive, Crusader Kings 2, and World of Warcraft articles. Those are part of my "fun blogs" where I just write about games and such with no real intent to convert. If they start getting traffic, then I'll go and add some more internal links or CTAs. However, a couple articles that I AM having issues with are here: http://cheapgamesguru.com/top-5-best-mid-tower-cases ; http://cheapgamesguru.com/top-5-computer-case-fans-the-best-case-fans-for-your-rig ; http://cheapgamesguru.com/what-is-the-best-micro-atx-case-for-gaming-top-5-best-micro-atx-cases (The links on the Micro ATX article are currently broken - This could very well be one of the reasons! However, this trend of high bounce rates started quite some time ago, so it's still an issue) Could it be as simple as a performance problem? I haven't checked my pagespeed recently, not since I switched to a new (Faster) host. I know users are far more likely to leave if the site doesn't load within 3 seconds. Another possible reason is referral spam, of course. I've tried my very best to eliminate it as much as possible, used filtering tools, etc. but I can't seem to completely eradicate it. Thanks in advance! Ask me for any details you might need.

How can I reduce my high bounce rate?
I've recently upgraded to a WP site but i have a very high bounce rate. It is typically 75-80% and recently I saw a 95% bounce rate. I found part of the issue was I neglected to change the urls for my adwords acct but I did that weeks ago and its still very high. Last week, for 1 day only i had 18% but it shot back up when I made some code changes that didn't pan out as expected. The site is an online store and is www.cheaptubes.com I really need to fix it. my business is severely hurting. Any and all ideas are appreciated.

Bounce Rate Spike Overnight - Did anyone else notice this?
Hello Moz Community, Starting August 12th, 2015, my overall website traffic bounce rate spiked literally over night and I am trying to figure out why? My traffic increase rate remained the same.
Search Behavior | | CamiloSC
My time on page actually nearly doubled.
but my bounce rate shot up from 9% to 82%. This is the same issue for almost every page in my 500+ page website. My bounce rate in every page was always below 14%. And literally over night on August 12th, the bounce rate skyrocketed. Did something roll out around that time?
Does anyone else have this same issue that would be kind enough to share some insight?0 -

.com Doman and off-shore host for an Australia company, does this hurt ratings?
We have a site based in Australia that has been using the .com domain. Recently the .com.au became available and we purchased it and use a 301 redirect. Does having a site hosted off-shore and a .com rather than .com.au for a company affect the ratings in google.com.au for Australian traffic?
