Any ideas?
-
Hi there. We've been working on this site for a few months now - http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/.
We were hired as the previous agency was seeing traffic fall by 40% year on year consistently. Now, we've managed to stop that drop, but traffic recovery in Google (Bing and Yahoo are fine) is being really sluggish. Here's what we've done:
Converted URLs from dynamic to static
Sorted duplicate content errors
Cut down the number of on-page links (Still not under a hundred, but that's really tricky)
Carried out on-page optimisation on hundreds of inner pages, including adding new content
Does anybody have any ideas on anything we cou;d be missing? We're just starting to get going on link building, so that's the next step.
Thanks!

You are correct Brian and I have updated my original response.
The primary remaining advantage is any Google AdWords advertisements stand out more as they display the Google Checkout logo.

Google Checkout allows any fees you pay for payment processing to be credited to your AdWords account, so if you use AdWords you basically get free payment processing.
Hmm.. thought they no longer did this? Can new users still set this up?

A few recommendations for the home page:
1. Fix the copyright date in the footer. Don't hard-code the date. Use php to present the current two digit year in the format 2010-11.
2. Allow users to login via social networks: twitter, facebook, google, msn, etc. Place the icons next to the "login" option.
3. Add more social networks. You currently offer twitter. Add facebook and google+ to your home page.
4. Add more social networks to your product pages too. I noticed you offer fb Like's next to each product which is excellent. Add twitter and google+ there as well.
5. Add trust symbols. Versign, TRUSTe, BBB, MasterCard SecureCode, Verified by Visa, etc. Take a look at the bottom of the vzw.com page. I like my sites to have a similar look to their trust area. If you are on a limited budget, skip TRUSTe as they are way overpriced. All other trust symbols are about $375 each for unlimited views. TRUSTe is $500 for 100 views and $1000 for 500 views. It is definitely worth it for any large e-commerce site but smaller ones may wish to skip it.
6. If your URLs are ever changed, drop the ".html" or any other tech extensions. The remaining URL is short, looks nicer and will not need to be changed due to changes such as moving from html to php pages.
7. Along the same lines as #6, your current pages contain an extra id information which you may wish to consider removing. An example URL is: http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/sports-tcid19.html. The URL would look much cleaner as http://www.gear-zone.co.uk/sports
8. Consider accepting PayPal and Google Checkout as payment methods. PayPal is the world's largest online payment processor. Google Checkout allows any fees you pay for payment processing to be credited to your AdWords account, so if you use AdWords you basically get free payment processing.
While there is no evidence to support Google gives any direct ranking boosts to sites which use Google Checkout, I believe there are some indirect boosts because it benefits Google directly and because they know more about those sites and can trust them to a higher degree.
Good luck!

Ideas to increase PA
I need to increase the page authority of a specific page, it is a fairly bog standard product with very little scope if any for content generation. It is indexed and ranking at position 20 or 30. Any ideas on how to increase the page authority would be very much appreciated.

Is it a good idea to remove old blogs?
So I have a site right now that isn't ranking well, and we are trying everything to help it out. One of my areas of concern is we have A LOT of old blogs that were not well written and honestly are not overly relevant. None of them rank for anything, and could be causing a lot of duplicate content issues. Our newer blogs are doing better and written in a more Q&A type format and it seems to be doing better. So my thought is basically wipe out all the blogs from 2010-2012 -- probably 450+ blog posts. What do you guys think?

Significantly reducing number of pages (and overall content) on new site - is it a bad idea?
Hi Mozzers - I am looking at new site (not launched yet) - it contains significantly fewer pages than the previous site - 35 pages rather than 107 before - content on the remaining pages is plentiful but I am worried about the sudden loss of a significant "chunk" of the website - significantly cutting the size of a website must surely increase the risks of post-migration performance problems? Further info - the site has run an SEO contract with a large SEO firm for several years. They don't appear to have done anything beyond tinkering with homepage content - all the header and description tags are the same across the current website. 90% of site traffic currently arrives on the homepage. Content quality/volume isn't bad across most of the current site. Thanks in advance for your input!

Redirecting just the homepage of a site to another domain- good/bad idea?
TLDR: As part of a corporate rebranding/restructuring, my parent company is asking me to redirect just the homepage of our website to another page on their website. How will this affect rankings of all of the other pages on our site? I work for an organization (XYZ Corp) that is owned by another company (Big Conglomerate). XYZ Corp's main function is building custom skinned microsites for marketing purposes that live on our domain in a traditional directory structure (no subdomains). This morning, I get a request to redirect XYZ Corp's homepage to live at bigconglomerate.com/xyzcorp. But all of our original microsites are to remain as is. Technically, I know how to accomplish this redirection. My question is- should I? Or should I fight this? I searched previous Q&A's, but wasn't able to find someone else who was concerned about losing search rankings for sub-pages due to losing their website's homepage. A few more details- The microsite pages are not linked to from the homepage. The microsites do not link back to the homepage. We cannot move the microsites to bigconglomerate.com because everything that lives there is a cookie cutter CMS page. This is my first question ever, please go easy on me! Thanks, --Mark

Fixing the NAP Interim Idea?
I am realizing that most directory and listings have our old phone number down for our website. And am working on fixing them all. In the interim would it be wise to go ahead and list the old number somewhere on the site (like below the old one on the contact page) or would that create more strings to cut later?

Link Building Ideas for a health site
Hi, I am trying to rank a health related website. This is the url: www.ridpiles.com Domain age is 1 year 6 months. Done Directory submissions Blog Comments + Forum posts Done Social Bookmarks Article submissions (Not much) I have done competitor analysis. All of my competitors are just had links from directories and some link exchanges. They got links from quality sites like Yahoo dir. I know my site is far better than my competitors and has 100% unique content. I have submitted to yahoo directory inclusion, but still no luck i hadn't accepted into it. I am planning to go for a sponsered review but dont know, weather the link will be valuable for that much of money. I was left with Guest Blogging. I see this is the only option for me to build links. But i have a very tough competiton, i must compete with most reputed sites like webmd.com etc, i need to get more good links. But i cant get what other ways to get authoritative links. If Guest blogging is the only option for me, how many posts do i need to do daily? And can someone suggest me good Guest blogging sites? Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Is publishing a large quantity of content at once a bad idea?
If you plan on doubling the size of your site with original, unique content, is it better to publish it all at once or over a period of time? Is there any penalty for publishing it all at once?
