How do I find out how well a page converts in Analytics
-
Hello All,
I am looking to find out how well a page converts in Analytics. A simple request you would thing, but no!
First off let me list what I don't want to know:
- I don't want to know the conversion rate of a product
- I don't want to know the conversion rate based on the landing page
What I want to know is how many people click to add the product to their basket on a particular page (which I understand is not strictly the conversion rate, but whatever).
So the ways I have tried unsuccessfully are:
- The Analytics overlay (the in page Analytics thing) - this doesn't work because the "Add to Basket" button is not a link, it is an input.
- The Navigation Summary - this doesn't work because most of the time the /shopping_cart.php URL doesn't come up in the short list, and if you search for the URL in the search box beneath the percentages get all skewed.
The most obvious solution would be Event tracking but I can't get that implemented in the short term.
So does anyone have the answer to this most curious of conundrums?
Thanking you in advance,
Rich

Hi Martijn,
Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I am using Google Analytics yes. I was hoping to be able to do this without making any changes to the site (which will take time as I am not in control of that side of things) but I will certainly offer you solutions as well as the Event Tracking solution to the developer so at least they have a choice then.
I do like what you have come up with though, and it may be the way to go as the client is used to looking at goals (rather than events).
All the best, Rich

Thanks, am just looking at CrazyEgg now and the price seems very reasonable.
May give it a whirl.

Would an analytics package like CrazyEgg meet your needs? You can look at exactly where/what people clicked on a page, even if it's just an image or a form or some random text.

Hi Rich,
Wow, I have to say this is a hard question. Besides the fact that Event Tracking would be the best solution to solve youre problems I might have another option for you: creating an onClick event on your input field which (via Javascript) generates a _trackPageview. But because this is set up similar to Event Tracking I'm not sure if this would be working for you either and from your question I assume you're using Google Analytics.
I'm not quite a developer/ programmer, so don't pin me down if the following code block might not be working.
onClick="javascript: _gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/click-on-input-field-basket']);"
What this will do is create a new pageview everytime somebody clicks on the input field to add an item to their basket. By doing this you are also able to set up for example a goal within Google Analytics which measures the pageviews on the /click-on-input-field-basket page (for example in this case) and so to analyse the CTR.
Would this be useful for you?
Because for now I don't see any other options for you, tracking an element which generates no "tracked" pageviews/ clicks is quite hard to measure. But there are definitely even more smart people around here which could maybe shine another light on your question.

Query on google analytic benchmarking report
Hi All, First I select My Industry Vertical - ABCD then I select Region - US ( all region) then size by daily session - 10000-99999 finally reports appears "Blank" but when I decrease daily session from 10000-99999 to 1000-4999 or less then report is perfect. So what does it mean? My Avg daily session is 70k to 80k. So how to analysis benchmarking in this case? Thanks!

Page Performance
Not long ago, I had a couple of peers asking why I was using sessions to evaluate page performance. They said it wasn't a good metric for evaluating a single page because it only looked at how many site visitors began their journey through you site form that page. They were trying to convert me over to pageviews, which they said was a superior metric because it show you every time that page had been loaded and therefore provided better insight. Moz uses sessions on their landing page report. Is this because it's an SEO tool, so all they are concerned with is how individual URLs attract site traffic? Signed, Confused in California

Why only a few pages of my website are being indexed by google
Our website www.navisyachts.com has in its sitemap over 3000 pages of information, and this is all unique content written by our team. Now Google Webmaster central shows only 100 urls indexed from 3500 submitted. Can you help me understand why and how I can fix this issue? The website has 4 years old, is a Joomla 3.3 up to date. It has part of the content in the Joomla core content systems and part in K2. Thank you. Pablo

Traffic drop after analytics troubles
Hi For two weeks we had an artifical low bouncerate & high pageviews/visit in our Analytics reporting. The day we corrected the bug in Analytics - our bouncerate & pageviews/visit returned to normal levels - however we saw our search traffic go down massively(-50% in sessions). The bug in the Analytics was caused by a second Analytics tag which was included in an external script which interfered with our own tag. The drop in traffic occurred just after the removal of the second script (which was only on our site for two weeks). We didn't touch our own tagging - and there were no technical changes on the site during this period, and there is no seasonal trend which could explain the sudden drop of traffic. We double checked our tagging - and the analytics tag is present & working on all the pages of our site. On the organic traffic report from analytics you can clearly see the when the troubles with analytics started & ended (artificial low bounce rate) - and that the traffic drop starts right after the reporting issue ended. Webmastertools also indicated a lower number of views/clicks, but not to the massive 50% drop. Is it possible that Google uses the measurements from Analytics for it's SERP's? Or should there be another reason, and where should we start looking? Appreciate your help! e5GmoMM

Analytics oddity
This one has me a bit puzzled... I was just conducting a bit of routine analysis on a client's site, when I noticed avg. traffic doubled on one particular day. Now, this was easy to spot, since avg daily traffic for this site is 100 per day. The site also has approximately 100 pages of content. Here is the odd part... the spike was clearly attributed to Direct traffic and from a specific network in Palo Alto. The Bounce Rate was 100% and it appears that every page on the site was visited - very briefly. Any clues as to what may have triggered this? A competitor maybe? An unkown bot? I am looking forward to your thoughts.
