New domain ranking higher. Looks like spam backlinks.
-
A new site has appeared in our industry, and has taken the number 1 spot that we had for some time (years), in addition to some other great rankings above us for good keywords.
The site to my eyes is no better than ours, but what it does have is lots of links from different root domains.
However these root domains are spam, as far as I can see. You know the type, nonsensical blog comments, even links in nonsensical content on other sites. You couldn't make any sense out of the text if you tried.
I think this is the reason this site is ranked above ours now. His domain and pages have higher mozTrust and mozRank already, despite it being a brand new site.
I realise the importance of incoming links, especially from different, good quality individual domains, but my question is, do we join him by getting spammy links everywhere?

Thanks for your help Alan!

with duplicate content, rather then beiong penanlized, it is more lilkly that you will just not get credit for both. But witch one will get the credit www or non www. To make sure of this you need to 301
you have links in your site pointing to images that use both www and non www. so search engines will follow them as if the are going to a new site. only being images may not be so harmfull. but lets say some one links to you, but use non www, then your www rankings will not benifit. futhermore the SE' will then crawl the rest of the site and then you now have a problem site wide.
buy the way even useing uppercase and lower case is seem as 2 different urls.
I see you 301 is in place, but you need to find all the refs to the non www and fix them
-
Ah, ok thanks Alan. I've added that into the htaccess now.
Do you think that will make much difference? You say they rank as different sites, but I've never seen them both (www and non-www) in the same list? Presumably then that would be because they are somehow being penalised for duplication...
-
Yes thats one factor, but SE's see www and non www as different sites. Your rank is split between the 2. if you 301 one to the other then you merge any rank they have into the one domain.
-
Thanks for your advice Alan. I don't actually want to copy them as I have always believed doing the "correct" thing will work in the long term.
I've always thought to myself "if Google were watching me right now, would they approve of doing this" and if the answer were no, then it's not a good thing to do.
Regards the www, why is this an important issue? Is it regards "duplicate" content?
-
I once was temped to get cheap links, and yes it worked for a time. i have about 200 links each for about 4 sites, over a few months they all dispapeared.
I did notice that your site is accessable via www and non www.
If you fix that with a 301 you may get the boost you need.

It's in Google. It's annoying because it's clearly nonsense linking.
The reason I asked is because I know they "might" discount the links, but I've no idea if they will, or how long it will take. In the meantime we're stuck with losing revenue and having no idea whether to fight fire with fire.
I'd love to be able to go out and get decent one-way links from other sites, but in this industry and with what we do, that's just, well it's not possible to be honest...
-
In google or bing?
I assume google, they will eventualy discount the links, Maybe

Looking for a dedicated Backlinks/Disavow Platform
Hi Guys, Can anyone recommend a good backlinks program. One which is able to detect spammy backlinks and which has a disavow feature. I've tried Monitor Backlinks, Would appreciate any further suggestions. Priorities are ability to monitor new links and their value, loss of links, link opportunities, with the ability to create recommended opportunity lists and disavow files - ideal if can be used in some way for client reporting also - dashboard or pdf etc. Help with access to contract link builders (perhaps star rated for quality and efficacy) to go after the opportunity lists also a bonus etc. Basically what are people using out there and really liking!? NB: we use moz for some stuff and have a mix of other tools available but nothing seems to be really nailing this for us. Thanks!!

Disavow domain ignored
Hi We did a domain disavow some months ago and webmaster tools told us those links were not pointing at us anymore. But suddenly the same domain has appeared again in our external links list according to webmaster tools. Our disavow document still contains that same domain as a disavowed domain, so we don't understand why is still being taken into account. Thanks

Deep Links From Same Domain
I know that it is best to diversify your inbound link profile, but I would like to know the best practices for a domain as a whole as opposed to the domains component pages. If I have a good link source (say for example Squidoo) that can provide links to a website's home page AND a few of its lower tier pages, are all these links of more or less equal value (for seo purposes) to each of the link targets, or does Google simply use a "one source domain, one counted link" approach? Thanks Bill

Rankings unchanged
I have been working away on my site for almost a month now, following all the advice I have gotten here and things seem to be going great. I have built a pretty large 400+ number of backlinks from blog posts, press releases, forum posts etc. Everything is very nice and white hat, really almost nothing spammy at all, maybe a couple of blog comments that I shouldn't have made but nothing in the big scheme of things. The problem is that my position in SERP has not changed at all. Its strange my on page SEO got me to the first page of all my keywords but from there I have not moved a bit. I am local service site and I am still waiting for my pin from google places (third try) and I know that will have a huge effect on my main city. I also have landing pages in 3 other small local cities though and those haven't budged a bit either. I just wanted to see what people here had to say, possibly I am just not patient enough? it has been probably 1.5 weeks since my links really started to index and show up in webmaster tools.

Building backlinks
Hello all! We regularly create articles for clients and post them (along with links to their Websites) on their blogs. We then promote the blog article across social media and other networks to create backlinks / authority for the articles. My question is whether anyone has had any success with an automated submission tool for the articles that delivers good results to "many" directories, social Websites and so on. At the moment, we do everything manually. Thanks!

Can link juice be passed in an iframe from domain A to domain B
Need to give our web partners our booking form which must be loaded in an iframe calling back to our domain. Is it possible to pass any link juice from their domain loading our iframe back to us. Was thinking of a "Powered by" text link in the form footer, but I'm guessing the link needs to be outside the iframe. Would love to hear any thoughts or workarounds on this.
