How specific does keyword anchor text need to be?
-
I'm trying to get to the bottom of something. If you are trying to optimise for a phrase e.g.
"Keyword 1 Keyword 2"
And your anchor text is something like
"Keyword 1 keyword 2 Another word"
Does this still provide as much weight for "keyword 1 keyword 2" or does the additional word come into play and dilute the effect? If it does come into play does it have much of an effect?

Rodney,
Google spiders not only reads the anchor text on the link but also take into consideration ton of other factors including the text around the link, website url, domain name, domain authority, page authority, title tag and several on page elements to decide the worthiness of a link.
"Keyword 1 Keyword 2" anchor text definitely has more weight than "Keyword 1 Keyword 2 another word" or any other variation but that alone is not enough to rank for the keyword.
I have seen direct improvement in keyword rank due to exact anchor text vs anchor text with extra words but too many backlinks with exact anchor text will be considered a forced attempt to gain ranking and Google could disqualify the link juice completely.
Google is already beefing up their algorithm to disqualify paid and farm links. One of the most common themes in all paid links is the exact anchor text so it will be easier for Google to identify a set of exact anchor text links on a website with dofollow.
Always try to use anchor text variations in the link building campaign. There are far better chances of rank improvement with an organic link building strategy compared to a forced anchor text tactic.
Hope this helps.
Thanks
Sameer

Hi Rodney,
I don't think the additional word so much dilutes the value rather than it changes the context. Presuming you have done all your keyword research...
Play Sand Suppliers
Play Sand
Using the additional keyword Supplier would change the context to say purchasing rather than say landscaping. So Play Sand would be a broad term, and adding supplier would narrow that term as each additional keyword would.
I hope that helps

I have definitely heard advice from an SEOMoz video (purchased) that took the view that you can be penalised for anchor text repetition, I tend to vary everything when I link build including descriptions. If building for Directories I also like to see how the descriptions compare to those of the competitors just to make sure that they are all that they can be.
-
Thank you for your input,
I can be more specific, if you had a link e.g. <a href="">Play Sand Suppliers</a> or <a href="">Play Sand</a> Suppliers which of the two pushes the phrase Play Sand harder?
Thoughts?

I have payed around anchor text and found that all of the following work rather well:
phrase
word phrase
phrase word
word phrase word
phrase 1 phrase 2
Even these:
for more information on phrase visit: URL
phrase: URL
image link alt="phrase'
Without seeing specifics I can't say more but I woudl say if it makes sense to have the two phrases together then have it together by all means. In terms of dilution - I would not obsess over it to much if the link anchor looks natural.

This isn't really an answer to the question - in fact, it's something I've wondered about myself and I'd be happy to hear if people have anything to say on it that's backed up by research (probably wouldn't be too hard to design a test for anyone who's interested: take two new sites or new, identical pages on one site: promote one with KW1, KW2 only anchor text (gibberish words) and one with identical amounts of links (and from the same places) but some KW1, KW2 and some KW!, KW2, KW3 text, and see which one ranks first. Admittedly this isn't water-tight, especially considering one has to rank first, and even if the difference is reallt minute, with nothing else to go on Google might choose exact match.
On the other hand, we might see (and even if we don't see it in such a small test, it might be true) that Google would actually prefer to see variation - especially if you're talking about large numbers of links, it will make the link profile look more natural.
Maybe if I have the chance I'll run the test myself, but that might take a while to get around to it...
Good luck!

Need clarification on Linking strategy and whether I am doing more harm than good?
I wanted to get an opinion of whether a new strategy is wise or profoundly idiotic. Here is the scenario. We have a branded site that offers villa rentals around the world but we also have separately branded geo specific websites that focus on villas rentals at a specific destination meaning the villas are mutually inclusive on the sites but we try to differentiate them with different descriptions and markups. This is what we did. We have a magazine associated with the global company that posts articles 1 to 2 times a day and it is set up as a subfolder on the global website. The articles have revelant links to the global company landing pages as well as relevant villa pages. Additionally, we embed links to the geospecific websites as well if an article features a destination, topic or villa that is relevant to both the geospecific and global website. Moreover, In we have aggressively cross linked relevant keywords from specific villa pages (ie villa xyz on Barbados) to the magazine as well as to the root domain of the global website and other relevant pages. But we do not link the geospecific site back to the magazine or global site. Since we implemented this strategy, the rankings on our global site have dropped and the specific villa page on the global site (villa xyz on Barbados) has dropped precipitously for that villa xyz keyword. The complicating feature in all of this is that we have been launching new sites and fixes in the past month so I am not exactly sure what is the cause of the drop but I have a suspicion that the aformentioned issue may be a contributing factor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is too high a frequency of 'money' keywords backlinks considered factor for Penguin penalties, even if the money keywords are on reputable pages ?
Is too high a frequency of 'money' keywords backlinks (eg. a money keyword backlink for moz.com would be "Seo tools") a considered factor for Penguin penalties even if the money keywords are only on reputable pages, with decent PA, DA and trust ?

How can I find page 1 google keyword rankings for a certain page?
Not sure if someone has a tool for this yet or not... Say I have a page like this: http://www.merchantcircle.com/business/Spokane.Painting.Pros.509-210-2799 and I would like to find out what keywords this page ranks for on google. Is there any tool that I can paste in that link and it would give me keywords that it ranks well for? Other than the SEO moz rank checker. It's not like I want to run a campaign just for links like that but I might want to build some links to citations like that so I can move those citations up in the rankings.

Keyword Strategy for Very Large Website Launch
My friend and I are launching a website used to track alcoholic beverages. It has over 115k pages, three tier site structure. I am curious about the keyword strategy for the homepage. I know I will get a lot of long tail search traffic for drink names and how to mix drinks. Do I need a Keyword Strategy for my homepage with so many internal pages? Its a new brand we created, not a keyword domain. We would like to rank for how to mix drinks, etc... However with the number of pages we already have a lot of internal link juice. Where should link building be focused?

How important are exact keywords in your anchor text?
Hi Guys, I’m relatively new to SEO. I’ve recently started working for a website design company and am in the process of changing the anchor text in the footer of all of our clients sites. At the moment most of them read “graphic design & web development by dara creative” with anchor text being dara creative taking you to our home page. As you can see we are not fully taking advantage of the keywords that could have a higher impact. So I’ve done some keyword research and I hope to concentrate my efforts on the following keywords as the anchor text leading to the home page; website design Dublin, website design Ireland, web developemt Dublin and web design Ireland so it may read something like “web design Dublin by dara creative” However this doesn’t read so well as people may think that the company might be called “web design Dublin”. So the alternative might be “web design in Dublin by dara creative”. So my question is which would rank better? Does google rank the exact searched keywords higher than broader searched words? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks rob

If I write a PR release on a site such as PRweb with anchor-text links that is picked up and published by other news sites, do the engines consider this duplicate content or additional, beneficial links?
I recently wrote a news release on PRweb that was picked up identically by 8 other news websites, with the same anchor-text links as the original. Is the reproduction of duplicate content and links across different websites like this to the benefit or detriment of SEO and ranking power? Some of the links are: http://www.mynewsdesk.com/uk/view/pressrelease/eventa-new-eventa-christmas-parties-website-is-launched-648923?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=Alert&utm_content=pressrelease http://www.prweb.com/releases/christmasparties/neweventasite/prweb8562064.htm Many thanks!!

Duplicate Content, Replicated Websites, Noindex Type Question.. Need Advice Please
So I am working for a Multi-Level Marketing Company. The members each get their own website which is a wilcard subdomain. So we have example.com (Main site) mysite.example.com (Replicated) They both are literally the same content and I have chosen to noindex, nofollow the subdomains, but as a SEO that presents a problem with linkbuilding. However, the member only gets credit (think affiliates) if the click comes from their subdomain. I don't want duplicate content penalties and I don't want the members to possibly lose out on a sale that would otherwise just be credited to the company if the link was redirected to the main site instead. Did I make the right decision?
