HI
We have actually started to do this, the brands are not very well known which can be the issue with some of them.
Even if this is the case would you suggest still optimisation the page/titles/H1 with the brand included?
Great thank you. I think this is a great idea, the only problem I have found is that the suppliers have some strange names for their products, which are sometimes not even relevant for the customer.
Some require alterations, but as you said this is not possible for thousands of products.
Thank you for the tip, this is something we could look to implement to save us some time,
Great thank you. I'll use the tips you have given me to try and work through projects.
Identical as in, everything is the same apart from the manufacturer - which isn;t very well known or unbranded.
They are from 2 separate suppliers so they wouldn't want to put them on the same pages.
Ah yes, I am setting SEM Rush up this week so I can get started.
Your tips on using this are really helpful
Hi
I want to find out how ecommerce sites optimise their product names:
1. When they have thousands of products
2. When some of their products are identical
I notice on some sites, like this for example, they have no key phrases in their product titles http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6249346.htm
How can this help for SEO?
At the moment we optimise the titles as best we can for key phrases relevant to the products and differentiating attributes.
Where we get stuck is, if their are 2 identical products - how can the content team quickly add a title which is useful for customers and search engines?
Some products have no differences for us, but longer tail phrases are where we could get some good returns if the research is put in - it's just very labour intensive.
Thank you
Hi
Do you monitor your SERPs manually? I can't go back now but this is something I can do moving forward.
Thanks
Hi
I wanted to ask if anyone had any methods of checking whether you've been affected by a Google refresh? We saw a drop in visits back in July 2015 and I'm trying to pinpoint what from. I saw their was a refresh, but this only affected 2-3% of sites.
I wasn't working on the site back then so I'm not fully aware of what was happening
Thankyou
HI Tim
Thank you for the reply. We do allow the user to select what they'd prefer, I just wondered if it's worth changing the default to grid view & then they have the option to move to list view - or perhaps this won't make much difference.
Ours is more image based, it's something I'll try and test first.
Thank you
Hi
I work on an ecommerce site and wondered if anyone had tested grid view vs. list view on product listing pages?
We use list view, but I think grid view might work better.
Thanks
Both great responses thank you.
Just trying to get my SEM rush set up
Thank you
Hi
Does anyone have any useful tools or ways of looking for long tail phrases apart from Google Keyword Planner?
Thank you
Hi Erick,
Thanks for the response. It all makes sense to me, and I'll push for it. I'll have to build a case of why we want to go with a subfolder, so having feedback and real life case studies from others is great!
Thanks!
I completely agree with your approach. We're starting to get videos started, for me at the moment it's resource, so I'm trying to start writing and adding this content myself.
Great to hear that it's working for you! Gives me more motivation to keep pushing forward. Thanks:)
Hi
It is something I've seen discussed, but then I've seen people still doing it so I wasn't certain on the best approach.
It's quite difficult to display this content openly, on a product page/product listing page. Does anyone see a problem with displaying this content in full underneath product listings?
Thanks!
Hi everyone
I work on an ecommerce site and I'm trying to get more content together for the site & blog. The development team want to put the blog we have on a subdomain of our site, my question is - what is better for SEO
Subfolder vs. subdomain
I've read a couple of articles to say subfolder is better and a subdomain needs a lot of management to build up authority itself?
Thanks!
Hi
A while back I was told that using the display:none tag to hide content you want minimised is bad for onpage SEO - is this the case? It's not that we want to hide it from Google, we just don't want it taking up a huge amount of space on product pages.
I have found some of these on our site, and want to know how bad they are. Is the content under the tag going to be ignored?
Thank you
Can I just confirm, if you're DA has dropped after this update - are they referring to you as one of the low quality sites that Moz were crawling too frequently?
Or, are they saying because they were crawling these sites, using up crawl budget - they couldn't crawl all our pages effectively? I still don't understand why our authority would drop after this however?
Thank you
I have also seen the same thing on a number of sites I'm monitoring.
Is this just an estimate from Moz? Or will it affect us in Google?
Thank you
Hi Matt
Will this affect the Domain Authority score Moz shows for a site?
Thank you!
Hi
Our company has a Facebook page - it's pretty outdated and barely used. I want to change that, but wondered if anyone had any advice on how to start it up again?
It hasn't been used for a while, so how do you start off with your first post? Or do you act like you have been there the whole time... probably not the best idea.
We don't want to confuse people or look stupid with the first post. I want it to be regularly used for content, community building and demonstrating the personality of the company.
Thank you
Hi Ruth
This is great thank you. I feel the same way about monitoring keywords, however as we work on thousands of pages I have started to report on traffic to content groups set up in analytics which seems to make things easier.
I'll definitely take your advice on looking at our homepage topics in console
Thanks!
Hi Megan
Thanks for the feedback! I am in the process of working on the content so as it's taking some time we'll need to work on this first to ensure we have enough to post once we get started
Its' B2B so our customers are other businesses but the actual people who order could be anyone. A competitor analysis is a great start!
Becky
Hi
Thats great thanks for the info
How can I easily monitor where the pages rank? Rather than looking at it by keyword?
Is there a tool which would tell you, these are all the phrases your page ranks for? At the moment I have to input all the KWDs I want to monitor into AWR, however this won't tell me the entire picture.
Becky
does anyone have any good reporting tips for SEO?
I use advanced web ranking, analytics & Moz dashboards but reporting takes be some time. Is there anything I can try to report on correlations between rankings & traffic?
Great thank you.
I've been using it to report on for a few months and now my results are skewed. I use analytics too so will stick with that for now.
Thanks!
HI
Thank you for the feedback. Would it still be worth looking at the WMT query data in analytics or just to stick with new users/sessions?
Hi
Each month I export my data from WMT and go through analytics.
I also export our non brand queries from analytics and not WMT - I haven't had an issue before, but this month the impression data is quite different. In the hundreds of thousands different for keywords, everything seems to have taken a big jump and it seems strange.
However, not everything is different, I've spot checked some and its; consistent in both, I'm not sure what's going on?
One example would be:
<colgroup><col width="281"> <col width="72"></colgroup>
| industrial shelving | 1016 |
| industrial racking | 999 |
These appear as impressions from Query data in analytics, but they appear nowhere in my WMT query data.
Analytics query data shows:
| industrial equipment | 670 |
WMT Data:
| industrial equipment | 143 |
Anyone have any idea? Perhaps some kind of tracking issue?
Also I've triple checked dates etc...
Hi Cyrus
Thank you for you feedback. I'm going to leave it there for now and see how we go.
Thanks again
Great thank you.
These pages are thin in terms of amount of content as they;re product pages, but I am working to improve this.
The one thing I find tough being the only SEO is balancing
Improving content, backlinks, social/out reach and then the technical onsite stuff.
Trying to do a bit of everything, but then the worry is I only scratch the surface.
Thanks for the great advice as always!
Hey Josh
Thanks for the feedback! No penalty yet, I previously worked on a site with a sitewide [an agencies doing] and cleared it up, but that was thousands of bad, guest post links.
When is this new Penguin due to come out?
Do you rate trying to optimise your crawl budget? Is it still measure on whether your Page has much authority? A lot of our product pages have a low authority, so will they just be ignored?
Becky
I see, thank you.
I'm guessing if we have these external links across the site, it'll cause more harm than good for us if they use up some crawl budget on every page?
Is there anyway to find out what the crawl budget is?
Hi
I found this site whilst looking through WMT backlinks to our site:
http://www.buildingarena.co.uk/companies/key-industrial-equipment
Is this type of iFrame of our site a bad signal to Google? It's not something we've done, so I'd like to know before getting it removed.
Thanks!
I'd like to find out if this crawl budget applies to external sites - we link to sister companies in the footer.
Will Google bot find these external links and leave our site to go and crawl these external sites?
Thanks!
Hi Tim
Thanks for the feedback. I know how important it is, I am a little concerned with how much content we can product at this time - it's not a huge amount at present, so is this something we should work on before we start posting regularly on social?
We do send out emails, so I did think that would be a good option for promoting our social channels to get followers.
Thanks!
Hi
I work in ecommerce selling mainly B2B - I wanted to find out if anyone could recommend one social channel they've found worked well.
We're a generalist, so sell a huge amount of different products, like office supplies, furniture etc to companies.
We currently aren't really present on social and this is something I want to push - however with resource I think we'd only be able to focus on one at this point.
I was looking at Facebook or Pinterest?
Thank you
Hi Thomas,
This is interesting and great advice thank you. I think the hard sell may be internal, but it's something I'll look at proposing to the company.
I'll do my research and put a case together.
Thank you
Thank you! I'm watching this now
Great thank you.
All helpful I guess my other question is, I am in B2B, not the most glamorous products & we don't use social - I also want to change this, however..
When we start to produce this amazing content, if we haven't built the social community yet - where do we share it?
Hey
Thank you for the response.
We are creating helpful articles/guides & useful content for customers which links to products - I know we won't get links direct to products
I guess ultimately my question is, should we focus on this content within our site and earning links to this through outreach, or should we focus any effort on producing content simply for outreach purposes? Such as PR pieces for local news as an example
At the moment, I can't do both on my own.
Hey
I know the importance of both onsite & offsite, primarily with regard to outreach/content/social.
One thing I am trying to determine at the moment, is how much do I invest in offsite.
My current focus is to improve our onpage content on product pages, which is taking some time as we have a small team. But I also know our backlinks need to improve.
I'm just struggling on where to spend my time. Finish the onsite stuff by section first, or try to do a bit of both onsite/offsite at the same time?
Hi Justin,
Thank you for the feedback. What I find difficult, is that we're a generalist ecommerce supplier and our keywords are competing with the likes of Amazon / Ebay.
I've also started adding unique content to our category pages, but right now the template isn't the best. I want to add content in a better way for the user, I want to make it work for the customer and not be pointless text just for SEO.
With gaining brand mentions, are there any quick wins here? I mean, outreach is a huge task alone and one I can't focus on full time.
Thanks!
Hey
Auto internal linking sounds great, did you set up rules for how it worked? To ensure it made sense and linked to relevant pages?
Thanks!
Hi,
I have checked through our schema, there were a couple of tweaks but after user the testing tool it's correct - unfortunately it's still not showing.
I did read on here that Google won't show it for everyone?
I've only just seen this
Thank you! I'll try and get to grips with User Flow, I need to dedicate some time to analysing the data
Becky
Thanks!
I have optimised key pages & raised that we get page speed looking into - I have to raise it to another team and it's not been prioritised due to other things.
I know we also need good backlinks - but the process of creating great content people link to takes time, I am starting to work on it, but it's not a quick fix.
Thanks for the Moz audit - I'll take a look!
Haha sure, perhaps 'll re-phrase and ask - what you would start with?
I've started with optimising current product/category pages so we're focusing on the correct keywords. I know we need more content & internal linking, but I guess I'm caught up with what task to start?
Hi
I wanted to find out if anyone had any quick wins for an ecommerce site & SEO. I am the only SEO and we have a small online team and an ecommerce site with thousands of product pages.
It's impossible to optimise everything, and we have taken the top 100 products and optimised them - starting from scratch with keyword research.
I'm now struggling to prioritize what we need next - I know we need better internal linking, content, social and lots more, but this isn't something I can get through alone.
I need a starting point and perhaps something with a quick win initially?
Thanks
