I would be more seo orientated than that. Can you use a keyword or second keyword as the H1 tag - for each page? Place it above the fold, so it tells customers what the page is about? That might be the page titles but just checking...

H1's in my experience are influential in the seo armoury. Ideally it should be above the fold, a good sized font and identify what the page is about.

Correct - I can give you a trick though.
If the SERP is a high value page. Thousands if not millions of dollars has been spent on Adwords A/B testing the Ads that work on that page. When you frame your meta description and Title if you can - take into account the top Ads that companies keep on replaying. They would not keep running them, if not highly successful on that page.

Interesting responses - we specialize in title tags and descriptions. There is no uniform practice as such. I disagree more with Tom on the above, but he is also right! The suggested method by Alick is I believe still generally the best way forward.
That said as Tom pointed out clickability should also be an integral feature in how you form the Title tag and description. So there is a trade off - and difficult often to find the balance SEO -v- Clickability. High traffic pages should have alot of thought and consideration - impacts can be massive.
The positive is with the new search traffic data available in WMT's you can try a few options over several weeks. In the new WMT's you can monitor each page more accurately and the effect of Position, Impressions, Clicks and CTR changes. Our experience is that with changes to the Title & Description & the subsequent Clicks on page google re-evaluates "the page relevance to the query" to answer a "searchers query". Google re-sets or re-tests you. Google either then "publishes the page on more or less searches" and google monitors searchers behavior on the page when people click through, for stickiness.
A good Title tag will have strong keyword elements and this can be be measured in WMT's as Google places the Result on more "searched pages". Immediately after indexing the page position may drop and likewise CTR. However the clicks go up. Why does this happen? It is because google believes the new result answers more searchers queries. Then the google tests how people respond to the page when they click through - if positive the page position climbs on the new pages - if there is no stickiness (ie they pogostick) it declines.
If google believes the new page is answering a "searchers query" then the page ranking generally will slowly increase, and likewise CTR.
Anyway maybe got a bit off track. But feel free to ask any questions. ps Yes I know google state CTR is not a ranking factor however they do take stock of what customers do on a page.

Url's are not the be all and end all. However for global .com is the safest and best choice. An eu is not overly exciting to anyone, I think a turn off to many americans. A .co would be better. That said you can make any domain work except ru !

yes correct - the major change you have already done on WMT's. If you think people are typing in co.uk instead of .com then re-direct co.uk to .com.
From an SEO perspective it will make no difference.

If you only set WMT's to the UK today you will have to wait a while for it to update. That would be the primary cause of the issue you have raised above - so you have solved it!
I would keep your .com do a 301 re-direct on the .co.uk.

Is the geo setting in WMT's set to UK? You need to tell google what is your target audience in your case the UK.
If the .co.uk is available I would buy it to stop competitors buying it, and re-directing it to there site.

Yes, if you type in "health insurance" (as a keyword in Australia). You will see two numbers top left box - CPC = 6.87. Then in the box under it is states Health insurance = 5.75. Two different numbers for CPC on the same page! for the same keyword. That is the error that said they would fix. Still would not tell me which one was meant to be accurate...
I add the average CPC for that keyword is well above that number.
So yes, a guide but not much else for CPC. Because we can check it on Adwords... monitor it all there.

You are correct. Also Semrush gives two CPC numbers for each keyword on the same page. I actually rang Semrush about ti, and they said it was on their to fix list. That was 6 months ago and still has not been fixed.
Just use Semrush as an indicator. I find it is reasonable for competitive traffic and not so accurate for low volume keyword traffic. Though in your case - it seems not at all. It would be impossible to get right as many keywords fluctuate widely depending on season.
Not sure if I helped but there are significant inconsistencies in the CPC data.

Google uses titles as an important step in determining whether a website answers "searchers intent" - should google display that page on the SERP.
The composition of a title is far more complex than the obvious. The title has a strong SEO focus but also it has to be optimised for clickability. So there are trade-offs. An example is we have changed titles - a few words around and seen a 6 times uplift in CTR. So optimising for the customer is integral.
So the first thing to do is determine keywords - then trade off with click ability. I am not sure I would start with the word buy. A standard method is
Most Important keyword | Second most important Keyword | Brand.
Should be a nexus between the two keywords. Also the title can only be 512 pixels long before it truncates. Hence the title has limited space and two competing components clickability & SEO. Big decisions.
To answer your question, from the information at hand on the and v &. It is semantics but i agree with Linda the latter is more attractive and secondly it uses less pixels.
