My question to you - why do you want to blog about candles? Is this as a hobby, passion, or is this a method of bringing in customers to ecommerce site. You have to look at your goals for blogging - branding? Customer acquisition? Positioning yourself in the industry as an expert?

If customer acquisition is important to you, I'd recommend building the blog on the site itself, in a folder called /blog - this way, as an expert in your niche, you've positioned yourself in that manner, and people will want to buy from you due to your expertise.

From an SEO perspective, your high quality blog should naturally gain links, and can certainly be promoted through outreach and gather links in that way. This will help your ecommerce site's visibility and reach in the search engines, and will strengthen the domain as a whole. You don't get this if you blog offsite on a different domain - you won't be gaining this link strength for your site, which should be an important consideration.

I'd go with Business Name, because it's more likely to be searched.  Searchers like to see content that matches their exact query.

Also, personally I hate when people use copyright / trademark annotation in copy when they don't have to.  Others may disagree, that's just me!

Well, from what everyone is writing about Penguin, it's an algorithmic update. Meaning you need to fix whatever issues are there, wait for the algorithm to process again, and then if you've solved the issues, you should theoretically restore the rankings. That's much easier said than done. You don't know exactly what the issues are, and we don't know when the algo will process again.

I think the timeline you have set is highly unrealistic and you should aim to set expectations with the client that this process can very well take much longer. If this previous SEO company built problematic links, I think you'll have to deal with them. I don't think pointing good links into the site will get rid of the issue with the problematic links and clear you of the algo. I think you're going to have to go through the tedious work of cleaning things up. The good news is that a bunch of people have written about what to look for. Check in WMT tools for sitewide links, check your anchor text pointing into the site. Export your external links from OSE and then upload them to Linkl Detective- http://linkdetective.com/- let it do the hard work for you, classify a lot of the links, and then you need to go through the process of trying to clean things up, doing as much as you can, and then submit a reinclusion request (may help, may not), hoping Google will discard the other links.

Good luck - really try to demonstrate to your client the complexity of the process and extend the timeframe of the project - that's my ultimate recommendation

You can absolutely outrank them, but you are starting out behind.  Despite the EMD update, EMD's do still have some advantages from my experience.  Specifically, they can get more keyword rich anchor text links "naturally" because people tend to link using the site name.

That said, if you have better on-page SEO or significantly more links than the EMD you're competing with, you should ultimately come out ahead.

You can add noindex to the whole subdomain, and then wait for the crawlers to remove it.

Or you can register the subdomain with webmaster tools, block the subdomain via the robots.txt with a general Disallow: / for the entire subdomain, and then use the URL removal tool in Webmaster Tools to remove the subdomain via robots.txt. Just a robots.txt block won't work - it won't remove the pages, it'll just prevent them from being crawled again.

In your case, I would probably go the route of the robots.txt / url removal tool. This will work to remove the pages from Google. Once this has happened, I would use the noindex tag on the whole subdomain and remove the robots.txt block - this way, all search engines should not index the page / will remove it from their index.

Some of what you're doing sounds ok, but I'd definitely stay away from the article spinners and the article directories. In short, don't pollute the web with crappy content that no human would ever read - Google is catching on more and  more and punishing those who do.

Also, I'd focus on making onsite improvements - make sure your titles and meta are written well, aren't keyword stuffed. That your internal linking is solid and your pages are crawlable and configured properly. Try to improve on things like site speed, and markup your data using schema.

Bottom line is - try to create awesome pieces of content for your sites, and build relationships with others to market them and spread publicity.

I don't think this should be counted as a bounce, because the visitor converted by filling out the form, but analytics may track it as a bounce, because they left after one page and the form submission may not be counted. I would trigger the form to fire an event upon successful completion, the event by default should count as an interaction and thus not as a bounce on the site.

Particularly, this sentence - they're talking here about the default consideration of events, as long you don't specify it's a non-interaction event - "a single-page session on a page that includes event tracking will not be counted as a bounce if the visitor also triggers the event during the same session."

So set up an event to capture form submission, and this should solve your one page visit/form submission/bounce rate quandary.

Why not write the content normally and use css to style the text to force lowercase - this way it shows up in the engines and to other crawlers as readable and normal text, while it displays in the browser to humans as lowercase? that's what I would do

Ok - so a few things - I'm not worried about the sitemaps - those aren't a big deal (should be fixed, but not first priority).

In my eyes, you need to do 2 things pronto:

1 - remove the old.toughtimeslawyer subdomain - do this by blocking the subdomain via the subdomain's robots.txt - do a disallow: / in the robots file, and then go into the webmaster tools for the subdomain (which you should set up if you haven't already), and use the URL removal tool to remove the subdomain from Google. Once this is done, and the subdomain is no longer indexed, add a noindex meta tag to all pages and remove the robots.txt block - this should get rid of the subdomain permanently from the index.

2 - you need to get a handle on the 301 redirects - crawl your current site structure, and redirect any old URLs to the new URLs - you should keep a close eye on the 404 errors and soft 404 errors sections in Google Webmaster Tools, and make sure to fix those errors as they pop up. This can be time consuming, but it's key. Set up a redirection plugin for your wordpress - the redirection plugin can also track 404 errors and then you can tell them where they should redirect. While this should have been done in advance and is key to any properly planned and organized site migration, you can do this after the fact and try to catch as many of these 404s as well. I'd also look at your inbound links from OSE or some other tool, and make sure those pages are redirected to their proper location, so you preserve the inbound link juice.

These are the key things in my mind you should do according to your post. Good luck!

You'll want to configure a custom variable at a session level - you need to have your site fire the custom variable when users log in or are logged in in their sessions, and then once you have this configured, you can look at logged in vs non logged in behavior and all of the other goodies analytics provides.

It's not just a quick change in analytics, but will require some dev work on your end to make this work, but it should solve your questions and give you new insightful data that you can action to improve your site and your users' experience on it, so I would recommend doing it.

Whenever I do KW research, I also use exact match. For SEO purposes, you're trying to gauge search volumes for specific terms. (Of course, these numbers are way off in the AdWords tool, and certainly can't be trusted as precise numbers.) You want to know how many times people searched for buy batman comics in a month. When looking at the data for this term, or any term, broad match numbers will be drastically higher than exact match, because they'll include search volume for many other terms and not just the one term you are looking for.

Remember, it's important to always have in the back of your mind not to trust the numbers. And don't think you'll get 1000 visits a month for a term if you rank #1 and that's the search volume. According to the latest CTR studies (most recent one was published by Slingshot SEO and there was a post about it here on the Moz blog as well as their own detailed writeup), the top organic spot gets 18.2% of search volume.

You can also check out Bing's new Keyword research tool, built specifically in their webmaster tools suite to provide you with information about organic searches. Granted that Bing's user base is much smaller, it can still be a good additional resource to have in your KW research arsenal.

I agree with what Andrea wrote above - just one additional point - blocking a file via robots.txt doesn't prevent the search engine from not indexing the page. It just prevents the search engine from crawling the page and seeing the content on the page. The page may very well still show up in the index - you'll just see a snippet that your robots.txt file is preventing google from crawling the site and caching it and providing a snippet or preview. If you have canonical tags put in place properly, remove the block on the parameters in your robots.txt and let the engines do things the right way and not have to worry about this question.

It's more of a site security issue - not updating your wordpress and plugins leaves you vulnerable to security flaws exploited in old wordpress installs - Google is trying to help you and encourage you to update your wordpress to maintain security and prevent the site from being hacked.

I don't believe it's a rankings issue, but more quality of website and health of the web in general issue that Google is sending out these messages.

Ideally, it's best not to have the index.html showing up as well - could be a problem of duplicate content. So I would recommend correcting your internal links to point to www.website.com without the index.html. Generally, you should set up the server so that it strips out the index.html and 301 redirects to the clean domain. However, if you need to keep the index.html live and can't redirect it, at the very least I'd make sure to use a canonical tag on the page pointing to the clean version of the page, www.website.com.

Have you outsourced link building / SEO services to anyone? It could be they used a tool or outsourced this work to someone else, and these articles only went live in Oct. and Nov, even though they had technically gone through the pipeline a few months prioer?

It doesn't seem like someone would attack your site in that manner with a few articles on a crappy site - they would use sitewides, thousands of directory submissions, social bookmarks, etc., for much cheaper than having 3 unique articles written and posted with anchor text.

I'm more of the opinion these are remnants of an old link building strategy than of a malicious attack to hurt your site.

In this case, use the canonical to point to the default version of the page, without the default.aspx - make sure all pages use the same canonical tag.

More importantly, you have a major redirect loop going on here on your home page - this is definitely not configured properly  - look at the attached image - you have 3 redirects going  here, both 302 and 301 - you really should clean up this path and have the site resolve normally in a browser- the tool I'm using is the ayima redirection tool for chrome, but the mozbar in chrome and firefox will also show you the redirects - go to page analysis, an then the second tab, page attributes, will show you the redirect path your browser took.

You should have either http://www.aviation-sms.com or http://aviation-sms.com resolve a 200 status code, and ideally, the other one should 301 redirect to the correct version. If not, then use the canonical tag to point to the primary version on all other versions of the URL.

Basically, your site isn't coded properly, and you should fix it - you should only have one section, and one <title>element - there may be other elements duplicated as well, but this is what I see from a quick check of the code.</p> <p>Mark</p></title>

When you block a page or folder in robots.txt, it doesn't remove the page from the search engine's index, it just prevents them from recrawling the page. For pages/folders/sites that were never crawled by the search engines, robots.txt can prevent them from being crawled and read. But blocking pages already crawled by robots.txt will not be enough on its own to remove them from the index.

To remove this low quality content, you can do one of two things:

1. Add a meta robots noindex tag to the content you want to remove - this tells the engine to remove the page from the index and that the content to them shouldn't be there - in effect, it's dead to them
2. After blocking the folder via robots.txt, going in to Webmaster Tools and using the URL removal tool on the folder or domain.

I usually recommend option number 1, because it works for multiple engines, doesn't require webmaster tools for each engine separately, and is easier to manage and a lot more customizable exactly which pages you want removed.

But you are on the right track with the sitemaps - don't include links to the no index pages in the sitemap.

Blocking with robots.txt doesn't remove pages/files from the search engines, it only prevents them from crawling the subdomain. If they already crawled those resources, as they have in your case, the robots.txt will just block them from visiting it again, but will not remove them.

What you should do is authenticate the subdomain with webmaster tools, and then remove the subdomain via the url removal tool, as you asked. This is the way to go about it.

To verify the subdomain, there are multiple options, including via your host, or you can modify the dns to prove you own the subdomain - it really depends on your setup and what you need to do.

But to remove these results permanently, with your robots.txt block, you should do it via the URL removal tool.

For webmaster tools, you authenticate each site separately. These are different country level top level domains, and will be separate entries in webmaster tools. In addition, if you have different subdomains on the sites, www, my.peinsa, news.piensa, or anything else, you set those up each as a separate entry in webmaster tools.

You can geotarget the different sites/subdomains in webmaster tools as well - it really depends on the setup of your sites and the targeting you want to implement.

Other tools to do this also, but they aren't cheap, like SEM Rush, Searchmetrics, etc.

Tom Anthony had written a great blog post here on Moz a while back with a Google doc for doing this, but I'm not sure it's working anymore - you can check here

Try going to the soft 404 errors that webmaster tools is reporting, and see the HTTP status code you're getting. If the status code being returned is a 200, you'll know you're getting a soft 404. You can check the status code with the moz bar, in the page analysis section, under the page attributes tab, if you scroll down to the bottom, you'll see the status code of the page.

You may also want to emend the file reference in your htaccess file to be relative and just do /404.htm, and not the full path - maybe that will help.

I think the name should be reflective of the nature of the blog - is this a blog published from the site, which in my mind makes sense to call it blog, or is this something going to be created by and for the community of your audience, in which case it makes sense to call it community.

If you're publishing articles, behind the scenes info, general information, etc., I would call it a blog. If you're encouraging users to publish and it's more geared towards community participation, I would call it community.

Did you make any structural changes to your site before this happened? Did the URL structure change or the main navigation structure? I would first check your robots.txt and meta robots tags to make sure nothing was accidentally changed to block the search engines/remove the pages from the index. An accidental change of a setting can often make major differences for a site.

searchmetrics.com can also provide you with a bunch of this data - you can usually see where a competitor ranked for a keyword historically over time - I would check them out - I find it very helpful for competitor analysis

What you described here is the same content on multiple subdomains. If you add no index, no follow, you'll prevent the other pages from being indexed and from passing link equity. Firstly, even if you would go this route, I wound't add the no follow rule - that just means you're losing any juice that passes to the page from links, not something you necessarily want to do.

In this case, I'd recommend changing your canonical tag - the birmingham subdomain uses the canonical tag on itself, claiming that it should be credited with the content, when in truth, you said you want the credit flowing to the www version of the site. So you need to change your canonical tag on the location based subdomains to point to the www subdomain. So for http://birmingham.styleblueprint.com/food-and-entertaining/recipes/kale-salad-quick-healthy/, the canonical should be  rel="canonical" href="http://www.styleblueprint.com/food-and-entertaining/recipes/kale-salad-quick-healthy/" />

Use Google Analytics for this - set up your conversions as goals, and then you can track via various reports the conversion process - what did they do, where did they go, how did they flow through your website from initial landing page to full conversion.

Google Analtyics is very powerful - it does multi touch attribution - multiple visits until your conversions, how they came each time to your site, etc.

Once the goals are set up and the data is flowing, the fun really begins, and you can make lots of actionable analysis to improve your site based on it.

Hi Justin,

Both PA & DA are based off of the links that Moz's link index detects to your site.  Do the other two domains have as many links as the .co.nz site?  If not, that's why.  If so, it probably just means that Moz's index hasn't crawled the other sites' links yet.

As you stated, patience is a virtue, one we're especially not used to on the web. But it sounds like OSE never had reason to discover your site (no links pointing in that they would follow), so once your link building kicks off, and OSE updates, you should hopefully start to see your metrics rising.

There are tools out there you can use for rank checking, some free ones (like SEO Book's Rank Checker), which go pretty high, but not into the thousands. I'd say the easiest and quickest way you can check your rankings in Google would be to set up Webmaster Tools (if you haven't already) and check your stats in the Search Queries report. This will give you impression data, clicks, and average rankings for various search terms straight from Google. While not perfect, this is probably your easiest and cheapest (it's FREE!) way to check your rankings without doing it by hand.

While I can't comment on the site in question and their backlink profile because you haIt ven't shared it, what I can tell you is a bit more information about weekendpost, the site you did share as one of the sites in this company's backlink profile. Looking at a random site with articles built for link building purposes, it is pretty rare that you find a site like this with a PR of 5 in this day and age. Many of these were smacked by Google in the various updates and penalties, with public PR often reduced as a public indication of this site's devaluation. However, the site you shared has a toolbar PR of 5 and a homepage authority of 57, clearly a stronger site than your usual hastily built article spam site.

Looking closer into the history of the site using the Wayback Machine, you can see that this site was once an actual legitimate site and source of weekend news. It started accruing links in 2011, and this is where much of the site's strength comes from. At some point the domain was likely dropped and picked up and converted to an article site for links. Whois further signifies that there was a change in registration of the site with 1 drop.

Do I think Google will eventually catch up with this site and devalue its links if they haven't already? Certainly. But in the short term, links from this site may be boosting up other sites. I don't think this is a good long term solution, but I can see the benefit from links from a strong site (according to metrics at least) like this in the short term.

If you're finding these tags are missing meta descriptions, that means they are pages that don't have meta descriptions. This points to a larger issue - do you want each page being created by Wordpress for each tag you use to be indexed by the search engines? Are these high quality pages you'd want a user to land on? Do they provide value? If not, you don't want them to be indexed. You can use a Wordpress plugin to control indexation of these tag pages - Yoast's SEO plugin, http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/, besides for being awesome, will control this for you. Install and then go the indexation section, and from there, you can control what is indexed and set the tags to not be indexed.

You can do lots of other stuff with the plugin, and I definitely recommend installing it either way.

Instead of looking at keyword density, I'd look at more important metrics and factors in on site optimization.

Use moz's on on page report card http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/on-page-keyword-optimization/new to check your onpage optimization. Also, you can use the toolbar to highlight a certain keyword. I think most people nowadays don't really take keyword density into account, unless it's extremely high and the post is very spammy looking. Go for natural text that will make sense for a reader, a real human being, to read the content. Use your keywords naturally throughout the text, and I think you'll see better results than incorporating a keyword wherever possible to increase keyword density levels.

Raven had the same thing happen to them - http://raventools.com/blog/update-google-adwords-availability-in-raven/ - for all of what they claim, taking away access to Adwords keyword data sucks - this is right up there with not provided, and is going to cause a major backlash in the industry

Could there be something technical hurting that page? A meta robots block? A robots.txt block? Perhaps overoptimization of the page?

If you can share the URL, that will be helpful to try and provide some ideas for how to fix the situation.

Following what Daniel suggested, you should check your links and mentions in Open Site Explorer and Fresh Web Explorer, and check if any anchor text that seems suspicious is popping up. I would start there.

You can also go to your analytics, and check the referring sites - do a glance at the domains, and see who is sending traffic to you, and do any of the domains sending traffic to you seem like a good target to check.

Moving further, you can also use Google advanced search operators to find out who is talking about you on the web - search for your brand name, with -site:yourbrand.com query as well. This may find someone talking about your brand but not on your site that you weren't expecting. But I would start with the backlink tools available to you and check there. It may be easier to run an export of your backlinks, and then filter for relevant anchor texts. I always prefer to do this type of analysis in Excel - much easier and quicker to do manually.

Sounds very interesting and like a great opportunity for you.

What I don't get - why build a strategy for a site that you're going to eventually 301? Why not register the candidate's name, build up the content and the brand of the candidate over there, and then eventually just launch a site redesign/more formal look on the site once the candidacy is announced. Why the need to 301 to a new site? You don't want to lose some of your hard earned equity in 301s.

I also think in terms of social, be authentic, and let the candidate tweet about issues facing the community, etc. I think an authentic social media campaign will be more successful than a political censored one even before the candidate announces that they're running.

Nakul didn't specify, but the code he gave you is if your site is running on an apache server. Make sure to work with your developers to deal with these issues, and don't try changing your htaccess file on your own - you make major problems for your site very easily.

I created a pivot table for you based on a kw export I did from adwords - you could play around with it a bit more, but basically, it groups the terms into groups of competition, and then sorts keywords by highest local US volume. This sounds like what you were looking for - hopefully it helps. Here is a link to the Google doc in Drive - good luck and let me know if you need help replicating it.

Ideally you should remove one and 301 redirect it to the other. If you need to keep both pages on your site, then definitely use the canonical tag.

As an aside, I'd also configure your server to fix your URLs and remove the capital letters - configure your htaccess file on your apache server to automatically redirect capital letters to lowercase, thereby avoiding further canonical issues. In today's world, I'd be very hesitant to outsource my link building to company that will guarantee a top page 1 ranking for  a moderately difficult keyword. There are so many other factors to take into consideration.

I'd also stay away from a performance based model - this may encourage the link builder/SEO to try various methods to get quick results. If you suddenly shoot up in the rankings with the usage of dodgy tactics, I wouldn't be surprised if your site took an even bigger drop a short time later. Google is really cracking down on webspam and problematic tactics, and I think you need to be a bit patient and let things go naturally.

Currently, I'd advocate guest blogging and other forms of organic link building.

Is the site currently ranking for the term? What is the backlink status of the domain? If you pay a link builder to optimize for one term, and neglect your branded anchor text and the backlink profile of the rest of the site, you can run into serious issues with the search engines that will be harder to resolve and will take more time and money than you had originally intended to invest.

Hope this helps - just to clarify, I'm all for link building and organic growth in rankings. I just think you need to take a larger approach looking at your whole site, its onpage optimization and its backlink profile.

You can disavow the entire blogspot domain, but you may have some good links in there from legitimate blogs on blogspot. I would start first with looking at the links provided to you in webmaster tools. Download the list, filter for blogspot subdomains, and then manually review each of these subdomains. Anything you think in there that should be removed, try finding a contact email of the person who set up the subdomain - if you find it, great and contact them for cleanup. If not, just add it to the disavow list.

I would also do this for other potential spammy large sites that allow you to set up sites on a subdomain, like wordpress.com. I would look closely at those subdomains and decide what you want to cleanup and disavow.

Hiring people to talk about your brand is fine - paying someone to talk about your brand and link to your site with the express purpose of influencing the search engine's algorithms is the problem. If you pay someone to talk about your brand and they nofollow the link that is perfectly fine in the engines' eyes - the link is not meant to influence your ranking - however, paying someone for a link is the problem.

That being said, bloggers are getting smarter and realize they can make money off of this, and are going to try and make money off of guest blogging just like they can make money off of inserting contextual links.

If you want to avoid these issues, try creating a relationship with the blogger first, connecting with them on twitter and other social media networks, actually reading their blog and interacting with them. As a representative of the brand, they'll recognize you and you'll have a real relationship and then approach and ask to guest blog post on their site - this should be a very different reaction.

There are also lots of other ways to build links besides guest blogging - it ain't easy, and no one is saying it is, but you should probably diversify your strategy - here is a great post with various tactics and strategies from Jon Cooper - enjoy!

As you noted, the noindex meta tag is present on the page. This tells the search engines to completely remove it from their index. You want this to tag to be on pages you want removed/excluded from the search engines, certainly not on your homepage if you care about your PR.

As you can see here, your site is no longer cached in Google - http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=cache%3Awww.pokeronlineitalia.com. Your blog, on the other hand, which has the meta robots tag of "index,follow", is still in the cache of Google - http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=cache%3Awww.pokeronlineitalia.com%2Fblog

If you want search engine traffic, you need to remove this tag immediately and wait for Google to come and crawl the site. You may want to build some links into the site and/or share it over various social networks like Google+ and Twitter to speed up the indexation process.

This is most probably why the page has no PR - it's not indexed in Google.

Basically, SEOMoz is crawling your site and telling you they found these errors. There errors were found by following internal links.

I took a quick look at the code on your site, and in the social icon buttons in the header of your pages at the top right, for the Twitter icon, you are linking to yourself, to piensa_piensa - here is the code

Your href is piensa_piensa - this is adding this text to the URL of every page - correct this link and this error will be fixed - either use # until you link to your Twitter account, or link to your proper address of the twitter account. This will solve your problem.

I don't think there's no reason to nofollow this branded link - you built their site, they chose you and have kept that link on there - that's a pretty good signal that they are endorsing your work. If they want it removed, by all means they'll remove it, or ask you to remove it, or replace you with someone else and remove it. So I'd leave it as followed - but definitely go with branded.

You may also want to consider creating a page of clients you've worked with in the past/portfolio type page, and then link to that page instead of the homepage. If you get hit, you can always kill that page and start another internal portfolio page. With the homepage, that's much harder to do.

export it o excel, then use seo tools for excel to check broken pages, etc.

Like Patrick said, schema is still important in general.  However, since video snippets for private sites (all but YouTube, Vimeo, etc) died a while back, it might not be worth your while to pursue implementing this markup.  I might focus my efforts elsewhere (beefing up content, building quality links, etc) in order to get the best results from my work.
