I believe a landing page is a "separate page" from the site. Usually used to target new keywords. From reading and watching many videos I think its better to just add another page to the ranking site. Once you add another page you can spread the sites authority to this new page rather then start from scratch.

Whats the point of a landing page?
I thought it is best to use your current site and build a new page targeting 2-3 key phrases max.
Lets say I have a current site that is ranking for a few keywords, why would I build a landing page when I can just add a page to my site and target those same exact keywords?

RE: Variables in URLS?
Hey Pete can you please point out a site that does this.
I know that its not good to add too many links to any page and we should only target two keywords on each page. What is the best way to optimize for every city within a state?
lets say we had 20 cities we want to target, is it best to build 10 pages each one targeting two keywords? what is the best practice for this?

RE: SEOmoz Rank tracking
I checked it on SEOmoz and my ranking went from 2 to 6 I clicked it again and it went from 6 to 10 I clicked it again and it went to 3. Every time I refresh, the result its in a random spot.

RE: Why are brand, company name queries not showing up on Google SERP1?
What does &pwd=0 do? where do you place this? did you even read the question?
-
RE: Why are brand, company name queries not showing up on Google SERP1?
I think this is personalized search saved in your catch. If you clear your browsing history and catch in you browser it should solve this issue. I see Pintrest in the first spot.

RE: SEOmoz Rank tracking
Unfortunately this is not the case Google is not as static with results as they use to be. My rankings are bouncing up and down as if they are on a trampoline, as EGOL called it "the Google dance"

RE: SEOmoz Rank tracking
In your opinion, if i am logged into Goole and I run my term on the SEOmoz ranking tool does it have anything to do with me being logged on?
I am checking my terms in the SEOmoz tool. Me being logged into google or not has nothing to do with these results.
-
RE: SEOmoz Rank tracking
lol I guess Google is doing salsa dancing with our sites : ) every time I check my results im in a new location.
-
RE: SEOmoz Rank tracking
Hey Greg, running an SEOmoz report should have nothing to do with me being logged into Google or Gmail. etc.. However if SEOmoz is accurate, rankings are changing in SERP's within seconds. Its very strange considering this is the first time I have noticed it being this inconsistant.

SEOmoz Rank tracking
I think this tool is a bit off : )
This morning I checked my ranking for a keyword and every time I recheck it I see my results in a different place. I checked on word 5 times and got three different results. Is Google brocken or is the tracker doing its own thing?
This is not the first time I am seeing this issue only today its really acting up.
IMHO I think it would be best if the tool just says out of order rather than 3, 10, 6 for one keyword phrase within ten minutes...

Google merchant
Is there a way to optimize for google merchant. One of my clients sells mac decals and when you go to google type it and hit shopping it seems like every site is amazon.com
Are they covering the SERP because of there authoritative qualities?
How does this work?

RE: Suggestions on Handling Copycat Spammer
They have probably used a service like fiverr to gain the users... You can buy 5,000 likes for 5 bucks... Don't worry man, sites like these never make it long. They will lose the race I would bet anything on it.
-
RE: Suggestions on Handling Copycat Spammer
Well if its not duplicate you can not report them. I use resources all the time to create content. We have to learn from somewhere, right?
-
RE: Suggestions on Handling Copycat Spammer
Same thing happend to me. A site was stealing our content and not tracking back, they were also erasing our links... Contact google they will contact the website for you. If the site does not remove the duplicate content they will be de-indexed : ) When I complained Google contacted them and they removed all the duplications.

Hope this helps.

RE: Is this site legit?
Yeah I have added a site to my profile. By legit I meant is this kosher or are they being scummy? : )
But you've answered my question, thank you!

Yelp Reviews and Google + reviews
After reading this SEOmoz thread http://www.seomoz.org/q/getting-reviews-to-stick-on-yelp-google I have learned that one cannot leave fake reviews because Google and yelp can see if the users are real by the user behavior. If one of your clients is happy with your service and they have never left a Google review or yelp review and you have them leave your company a review it will be filtered and not count.
Google’s +1 is fairly new and I am not sure if many users use it. IMO a user is much more likely to Facebook "Like" something. Same goes for Yelp, I feel like many local services don’t have a high enough search volume to benefit from these areas. If a company cannot have a satisfied customer leave a review on Google + or Yelp because they are not active enough on these networks, the company does not receive the credit they deserve.
I'm assuming SEOmoz has the contacts to make a change, well here is my idea: How about Yelp and Google + send a letter to the address of the review... (Same as a Google places listing, reviewer will receive letter and enter a pin number online to confirm review) this solves the issue and businesses can receive the credit they deserve.
In all fairness if a company does right by someone, the company deserves the review, right? Otherwise this should not be a ranking factor IMHO!

Yelp, yahoo, local directories..
We are currently in one location and we are moving our office.
Would it be better to leave all the directories and add new listings with the new address? This way we get 2 listings until someone in this address claims a business here.
or
Would it be better to change all the existing to the new address?

Is this site legit?
http://www.gglpls.com/ is this site legit?
Submit website to google + directory?

RE: No links or traffic to our articles
Probably a boring niche... my specialty : )
I would recommend guest blogging in relevant niches. Myblogguest.com is a great place for that. Also see if you can find someone in your field that has a large social media presence to share some of your information with. SEOmoz is full of useful blog posts with strategies to gain relevant traffic.
SEO is not just build it and they will come. You must build and share it, create info graphics, Press releases (PRweb or another reliable source), create a contest and write a PR for it, maybe Donate and write a PR. Be sure to use variations of your keywords when linking.
In my opinion the best linking anchor structure is 70% brand name keyword 20%long tail keywords 10% exact keywords
Tip: If you want something from someone you must give value first. I offer potential link building partners all types of things, it depends on who and how. Example: Sometimes I find problems with a site or poor graphics. I can offer my services in exchange for a link.
There may be other factors preventing you from ranking however without your sites URL I cannot help.
The beauty of a boring niche is its boring for your competition as well.

RE: Is guest posting still a good idea?
"I agree with many of the reasons EGOL often states for not guest blogging (why would you ever create a competitor for your keywords by giving someone your valuable content?)" Hmm this is an easy question... If you have a new company and you want people to find you, why would you advertise? lol
Think about it if you have no traffic on your site and there is an opportunity to share your knowledge/product/invention whatever. Why not publish a blog on a relevant site? It’s a win! win! You see you drive relevant traffic from relevant or interested areas on the web and it also helps you get found on the web SEO and I repeat "Give the people what they want, and Google will give you to the people."
You cannot compare spam-based site like BMR to a helpful networking site like MBR!

Trackback/Syndication
Using wordpress or any other blog to properly syndicate an article without duplication risk. Can I trackback by just leaving a link to the original within or at the bottom of a post or is there a specific code to add.. What is the best way to trackback?
-
RE: Is guest posting still a good idea?
Its up to you! as Geoff mentions above. Myblogguest is not a bad site and they have good intensions. They are helping people share content for each others audiences. Lets say I needed an article about helicopters for my boat site I can easily get content from myblogguest and the author deserves the credit.
However if it is used to manipulate or spam it wont help and might hurt. Just like everything in SEO.
Many tools out there can be used for good or bad however you are holding the wheel. "Give the people what they want, and Google will give you to the people." + Donnie Strompf

RE: Using LinkedIn for Facebook likes?
Hey Erica,
This is a marketing related LinkedIn group. Anyone who liked me thru the thread might also like my posts because they are marketing related.
A while back we built a FB ad to gain followers and after earning 1000 likes we still had little to no interaction with our users. It was a promotional ad offering a discount for a link.
In my opinion it might be better to get everyone on LinkedIn in related groups to follow you. They are active and relevant.
-
RE: Adding Google + to SEOmoz
Right, Just imagine all online marketers having a quick link up method. Im sure if everyone had a link back to their social network below each post there would be much more networking going on.
-
RE: Is guest posting still a good idea?
Yes it still works. However, site has to be relevant and authoritative. Check out myblogguest.com

Adding Google + to SEOmoz
I wanted to add my google + signature to every post I make on SEOmoz and I think every user should do the same...
Two reasons why...
-
Google helps our existence so we should help theirs.
-
If someone likes what I wrote or vice versa we should be able to follow each other in a simple click.
In my opinion all blogs forum posts etc... should Lead to a user not a website, this will prevent spam and help people network. In other words blog spammers and forum spammers will be SOL (Which they all ready are lol).

RE: Using LinkedIn for Facebook likes?
No it does not help : )
Your missing the point...
Im on a thread and if I place my facebook name on the thread everyone on the thread will like my company on facebook in return I must like them all back.
These likes are from relevant sources from within a LinkedIn group. Is this good or bad?
-
Using LinkedIn for Facebook likes?
Now I know that shortcuts are usually not a good sign for SEO. However if I am on a group on linked and there are Facebook like exchanges going on I am getting real people in the right market, right?
See picture for more details.
Is this valuable?

RE: Social Signal Importance
Exactly my point. This is why I dont see it being a ranking factor and if it is... they will have to manually determine good from evil.
-
RE: Social Signal Importance
Absolutely, build it! Even if your in a non boring niche. In a boring niche it might not have as much value. However, if the competition does it so should you. Google counts social presence and have been hinting that it’s becoming more and more of a ranking factor.
I don’t like this because you can buy 10,000 likes from Fiverr for $5. (Stay away from this because one day maybe they will be able to detect spam or bots. Maybe they will be able to see a spike in likes and punish you for it). From my understanding of things with SEO there are no shortcuts and the shortcuts that exist don’t last.

RE: Best procedure for distributing identical content about your company/site for affiliates to use?
Well a trackback is to avoid duplicate content penalties for an external site with the same content.
A canonical is internal to your site. So if you want to have two pages with the same url and avoid duplication and still pass link juice you would use a rel=canonical tag.
This should clear it up for you as it did for me : )
-
RE: Social Noise - what counts?
How could they do that?
You see one of the companies I work for is a boring niche. We used a Facebook ad to gain users and we gained 1000 of these users when I pulled the plug. With 1000 users in a boring niche we got no interaction. So, do you believe Google can determine a boring niche from a non boring niche?
What do you think will get more attention a Lady Gaga post or a metal building post?
I am unsure of how much value these mentions have or how they are calculated. I find too many flaws in it.
However, if your in a non boring niche and users are interacting you should do fine, and most likely this will help.
Im speaking from a boring niche perspective... Whether I get 1,000,000 users to like me or 5 its the same interaction for each post. Non existant.
-
RE: Variables in URLS?
It should get indexed however it is very deep...
Its probably better idea to have it structured http://adomainname.com/Category/Location/Make&Model/
-
RE: Best procedure for distributing identical content about your company/site for affiliates to use?
Definitely** do something, you do not want duplicate content.** You can always trackback to the original content or use a rel=canonical tag.
-
RE: Social Noise - what counts?
Yes they do, Google supposedly uses social mentions as a ranking factor.
However I dont know how strong these social signals are and in my opinion they should not use this.
Why?
because you can go on fiverr and buy 10,000 Facebook likes for $5
-
RE: Panda and Thin Content
Maybe you can combine some of these pages? Show more then one video on each page...
Have you considered a blog for this?
-
RE: Anchor Text Diversification – Branded VS Non Branded – What is the best approach… if any?
Ive read a few case studie and I found that it is best to link to your brand name 70% of the time and use the other 20% with keyword variation and lastly use 10% [Exact] keyword and you will be safe.
-
RE: High Authority, What Value?
No it does not. In order to get the juice you need the link.
-
RE: Does posting an article on multiple sites hurt seo?
It depends. If the article goes on your site first it gets indexed and all the credit. If someone takes it for their own usage and does not link back to you it can hurt them. If they syndicate your article and trackback to the original, AKA the first one indexed they will not be punished.
-
RE: Why has my site gone from 3rd to 21st in Google...HELP
You have not used enough anchor text keyword variation. You were hit by Penguin. I ran a report on Open SIte Explorer (seoMOZ tool) and it seems like you're over optimizing your target keywords.
You can go for these keywords but you should not be so obvious. The goal is to help the user without the search engine. However, its always good to know the search engine law.
I hope this helps.

RE: Tips to get rid of a link from an infected website ?
Here is a free tool to check if a site has malware http://www.avg.com.au/resources/web-page-scanner/
You should look good for an email address and have them take down that link if possible. However, I doubt having one bad link will influence your results. The new updates were targeting spam networks and over optimized sites (mostly sites that used exact anchor text's).
I hope this helps
-
RE: Panda and Thin Content
Panda Update is about duplicate content, it's when you have text in more the one page that is exact. Only the first original content gets indexed. However in your case I am assuming you have a video with a transcript below it. Well they do that here on seoMOZ and theres nothing wrong with it. In fact, I recommend it. Some people prefer reading the content rather then watching the video.

RE: How to Link a Network of Sites w/o Penguin Penalties (header links)
If 50% of your links are [Exact] keywords, there is a good shot of the penguin.
I would recommend going back and changing the links from the [Exact] terms to the brand name.

New Bing Layout!

RE: Link Building Ideas for a health site
Myblogguest.com is excellent for finding guest blogs.
Also you can do Press releases from sources like PR Web to build some links.
Find professional voices for your health related site, network with them and get them to share your articles.
I dont look at competition for their back links as much as I used to. In my opinion, it's better to invest my time doing what the competition has not done, or thought of doing and not externally rather internally. What can you give your audience? what are they looking for? etc..
-
RE: Link Building with Bloggers
I would recommend using the brand name for linking in 5 out of 8 links. Be diverse and target the user. The search engine can detect what you want to rank for with a few authoritative links and proper usage for internal linking.
How to keep it looking natural... Good Question.
Would you put an ad on the moon for one of your customers to find your business? Better yet would you direct a random person to the moon for no reason? Well, any link that does not belong is doing just that. It is targeting not relevant traffic to your niche, and you are placing an ad on the moon.
If it makes sense then its natural and the search engine will determine this via user interaction. Use your keywords in variations and also be sure to deep link. Only place links where it makes sense, even if you have to create sense : )
Google will punish you for over optimizing and spam.. However if you are targeting customers with an ad on the moon. I feel like Google should send your site to the moon. It deserves it! lol
