How to beat Wikipedia article from the top spot on SERPS?
-
Hi Guys,
One of our clients has a good web site with lots of content that is ranked already on #2 for the top keyword (singular and plural) on Google UK. The keyword itself is a competitive one. The top spot is occupied by a wikipedia article that doesn't have much content in general. Can anyone come up with an advice what strategy we have to apply to outplace that article? Thanks!
-
Thank you guys!

Wikipedia can be really really really hard to beat.... did I say really really really really hard to beat?
Just keep working on your site like wikipedia was any other competitor. Build great content that gets liked and tweeted.. .stuff that engages your visitors.
There is no special bullet for killing wikipedia. You simply must overpower them by brute force of a great website.
Good luck.

I have seen some results for Wikipedia where you pull your hair out hehe, but the thing is the site is soo high authority and the internal link value it holds.
To be honest I have had experience taking down Wikipedia where you deal with big brand websites and you can highly target the site.
Really do some analysis on the links the wikipedia page has, see what you may be missing if content is not the problem.
Just keep pushing fresh content and social signals too if you can try and implement people to search for your website and drive higher CTR on the serp page.

I wouldn't suspect so. Wiki is seen as an incredibly Authoritive site and has many high quality links pointing to it, so it's high rankings are mainly down to the site being so authoritive and huge.
Wiki fulfills many of the factors within the periodic table of SEO ranking factors at http://searchengineland.com/seotable It's a difficult site to beat, though can and is certainly achieved.
Glad you like the suggestions, they will help to get there.

Simon

Thanks Simon, will try those. Do you think that google applies different ranking factors when it comes to Wikipedia in general?

Hi Ivaylo
I shall share a few pointers with you here for consideration;
-
Perform an on-page analysis of the website to identify and help resolve any issues that might come up, such as too many on-page links or too many no-followed links pointing in, any issues with titles or descriptions... (The SEOmoz toolset is great at helping with this).
-
Research what valuable links are pointing to the Wiki page and try and get some of the same links pointing to your clients' site (new followed links from different reputable websites will help a lot). Also, identify existing links where the anchor text could be improved.
-
Keep the content fresh, relevant and interesting.
-
Depending on what your clients' site offers, consider if there are any tools/widgets that could be developed to help make the site more useful.
-
Consider building upon the Social aspect, such as engaging with people on Twitter, Forums and Guest Blogging to attract more visitors and more sharing of your content.
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Website ranking stuck on 2nd page of google. How to bring it in top 10 position??
Hi I am working on a site indianhomeappliances.in that for search terms such as 'best washing machine in india' appears near the top of the 2nd page of Googl for url https://indianhomeappliances.in/best-washing-machine-in-india/ When looking at what is listed on the 1st page for 'best washing machine in india' I would appreciate any advice/guidance on what else could be done to give the site a final push to get on the 1st page of search results. I have made more than 60 backlinks along with sites from competitor analysis via moz for this page Looking at the sites that are on the 1st page I cant understand why many of them are ranking higher than me? Any insight and plan of attack would be most appreciated from any search experts on the forum. My website is 2.5 months old. Many Thanks

Does non-critical AMP errors prevent you from being featured on Top Stories Carousel?
Consider site A which is a news publishing site that has valid AMP pages with non-critical AMP pages (as notified within Search Console). Also, Site A publishes news articles from site B (its partner site) and posts it on site A which have AMP pages too but most of them are not valid AMP pages with critical AMP errors. For brand terms like Economic Times, it does show a top stories carousel for all articles published by Economic Times, however it doesn't look the same for site A (inspite of it having valid AMP pages). Image link: http://tinypic.com/r/219bh9j/9 Now that there are valid AMP pages from site A and invalid AMP pages from site B on site A, there have been instances wherein a news article from site A features on the top stories carousel on Desktop for a certain query whereas it doesn't feature on the mobile SERPs in spite of the page being a valid AMP page. For example, as mentioned in the screenshot below: Business Today ranks on the Top Stories carousel for a term like “jio news” on Desktop, but on Mobile although the page is a valid AMP page, it doesn’t show as an AMP page within the Top Stories Carousel. Image Link: http://tinypic.com/r/11sc8j6/9 There have been some cases where although the page is featured on the top carousel on desktop, the same article doesn't show up on the mobile version for the same query on the Top Stories Carousel. What could be the reason behind this? Also, would it be necessary to solve both critical and non-critical errors on site A (including those published from site B on site A)?

Country Code Top Level Domains & Duplicate Content
Hi looking to launch in a new market, currently we have a .com.au domain which is geo-targeted to Australia. We want to launch in New Zealand which is ends with .co.nz If i duplicate the Australian based site completely on the new .co.nz domain name, would i face duplicate content issues from a SEO standpoint?

Even though it's on a completely separate country code. Or is it still advised tosetup hreflang tag across both of the domains? Cheers.0 -
When do you use article markup for AMP pages?
Hi all! For a healthcare website we have setup AMP. Google Search Console suggests to use article markup for several pages and I am not sure if this is correct. There are two kind of pages:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | DeptAgency
1. News pages
2. Information pages, for example: symptoms alcohol addiction or Binge Eating Disorder There's no doubt the article markup will be correct for the news pages but I am not sure about the information pages. Do you guys suggest to implement article markup on these pages as well or only use this for real news/blog posts? Hope you can help me out. Thank you in advance and happy holidays! What am i not spotting?
A client i'm working with is desperate to rank top for the term 'wholesale jewellery' (it's a UK company and that's the UK spelling). He previously held the top spot but got hit with a penalty and is now bottom of page 1. So far nothing I have done has had much of an impact despite this being a relatively low competition term. We've fluctuated around the first page for the last few months but the highest we got was 4th before dropping again. The site's domain authority is on par with the site ranking top (who have no content to speak of) and is superior to most other sites on the first page. The site also has similar social metrics to the top ranking site and superior to most others on the first page. I've focused on building fewer good quality links and some of them have been excellent - DA 80+ and yet, still no movement. On-page optimisation is spot on as well. A couple of things I have spotted that might be having an impact: -my client's site has a .com domain where most others have .co.uk -most sites on the first page have either jewellery, wholesale or both in their domain names -relevance of linking istes could be playing a part here. My client has links from wholesale sites but few from jewellery-related sites -within my client's link profile there are very few, if any exact anchor text links for the term 'wholesale jewellery' -legacy of a penalty could be making ranking progress that much more difficult? I'd appreciate your input because I've hit a brick wall. The site is http://www.parklaneonline.com

Should I Remove My Articles From Article Directories?
I have been submitting articles to directories for about 3 years. With the Panda update, it seems that these directories are now obsolete. So, if there is no link value from these articles: 1) should I remove these articles (at east the better ones) and place them on my site/blog? 2) If not, would there be any benefit at pointing some bookmarks at these old links to maybe get some juice out of them?
