Press Releases and Duplicate Content on Event Related Site
-
I have a site that lists events. I ask those submitting events to submit original content if possible, but frequently they submit press releases which are already published elsewhere. I rewrite some of the press releases, but do not have time to rewrite every press release that comes my way. I want my users to get a comprehensive list of events, but I don't want get a penalty for duplicate content. What is the best solution?

Syndication tag can be used if you are not worried about your pages in Google news.
You may also use "noindex" or "canonical" if you want to play a very safe game. But as you know, your pages won't be indexed.
If you mention the content source at prominent places, you will be O.K.
Example:
In title you may say as "....event by ........."
In the body, you may say as "...thanks to .........."
As long as the overall percentage of duplicate content in your site is in very reasonable level and you link back to content source, you won't find any problem.
Google clarified that content duplication alone will not lead to negative impact.

Thanks Devin,
That seems pretty reasonable and in tune with what I was thinking myself. Unfortunately I think if I want to provide users with a complete list of events I will have to probably include some press release material. A couple of further related questions might be:
- Should I be trying to prevent search bots from crawling pages if the content is not original (by using noindex tag and/or use of robots.txt file)?
- I wonder if the
syndication-source
tag might be more relevant than the canonical tag?

Hi Andy,
A non-technical solution would be to have an email template and send it to whoever submits a press release. Something like...
"Dear so and so,
_Thank you very much for your submission to my site. I would be delighted to include your event in my listings. Unfortunately I am very wary of featuring a press release that has been published ad verbatim on other websites. I would really appreciate if you could alter your submission to include _whatever specifications you need .
Once I receive this I will publish your event immediately. "
Alternatively, you could use the rel=canonical tag targeting the original page the press release was published on. This would prevent you being done for duplicate content. However, your page will be less likely to appear for searches conducted for that event. I'd imagine you'd prefer your own pages to appear in the SERPs so this probably isn't ideal. I've never had to deal with this kind of problem myself so I'd be very interested to hear what others have to say.

Sites Like Outbrain that are local?
So I used Outbrain and I liked it, but I think it would be more valuable if you could target the state where your client is. Outbrain targets the entire county, which might not be valuable for a local client. I am wondering if there are any other sites like Outbrain that allow you to target locally?

Content Curation & Duplicate Content
Hi, I have a client that wants to do content curation but it has been my understanding that adding external content that is already live on another website to your website, you get penalized for duplicate content. I have read that you can create an excerpt and then Google won't penalizes you for duplicate content. Can anyone shed more light on this topic. Thanks

Marking our content as original, where the rel=author tag might not be applied
Hello, Can anyone tell, if it is possible to protect text –type content without the rel=author tag? We host a business listing site, where, apart from the general contact information, we have also started to write original 800+ character-long unique and original contents for the suppliers, where we expect visits, so rankings should be increased. My issue is that this is a very competitive business, and content crawling is really an everyday practice. Of course, I would like to keep my original content or at least mark it as mine for Google. The easiest way would be the author tag, but the problem is, that I do not want our names and our photos to be assigned to these contents, because from one hand, we are not acknowledged content providers on our own (no bio and whatsoever), and on the other hand, we provide contents for every sort of businesses, so just having additional links to our other contents, might not help readers to get what they want. I also really do not think that a photo of me could help increase the CTR from the SERP:) What we currently do, is that we submit every major fresh content through url submission in WMT, hoping that first indexing might help. We have only a handful of them within a day, so not more than 10. Yes, I could perhaps use absolute links, but this one is not a feasible scenario in all cases, and about DMCA, as our programmer says, what you can see on the internet, that you can basically own. So finally, I do not mind our contents being stolen, as I can’t possibly prevent this. I want however our original content to be recognized as ours by Google, even after the stealing is done. (Best would be an ’author tag for business’, so connected to our business Google+ page, but I am not aware, this function can be used this way.) Thank you in advance for all of you, sharing your thoughts with me on the topic.

I want to remove some pages from my site with PR, what should I do with traffic?
I have a section of a site that I want to remove. It has a main page linked from the nav menu, and a half dozen subpages under that. The pages get some traffic and have ranks up to PR3, which is what my site's home page is. I'm no longer want to do these pages as they require tremendous upkeep and I'm not interested in keeping them going. So, I know if I just remove these pages and that's all, I'm going to pay for it somewhere with Google. What else should I do? I do't really have similar pages to direct them too.

Emailing content to posterous
Posterous is setup to syndicate my content to my personal WP blog. After reading information on SEOmoz, I realize that Duplicate Content is not a good thing. Should I stop this process? Note: The way it works is I email a post to posterous and it posts it there and on my WP Blog and create a FB post and a Tweet.
