How to calculate the most powerful websites in my industry?
-
Hi,
I would like to do some research and put together a post on the most powerful websites in my industry, and was wondering if you have any advice on how to calculate this - or if there is a tool available?
Rather than making assumptions, I would like to try and be as accurate as possible.
Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Thanks for your responses and time. Apologies for being so vague I was trying to find out if there is a tool that does this or encourage a discussion on the topic, this is my first seoMoz question - I'll think of a better one next time ;o)
BTW the motivation for this is purely for producing interesting content and to point readers (students and professionals) to the most powerful sites in the industry (for what it's worth, I wouldn't make the list - but aim to one day).
Here are my thoughts on this subject - please don't feel like you have to reply.
So I was thinking to create a spreadsheet with a list of the websites in the industry (your right, I pretty much know who will be up there).
e.g. Companies, Brands, Associations, Academic Centres, Media & Bloggers from the industry and also include the websites that appear in the top 10 search results for variations of each keywords.
Score each site on a range of factors (compared against each other) - here are some ideas:
- Domain Authority
- Amount of links
- Quality of links (only counting links over a certain domain authority (20) - 20 Page Authority for .Wordpress/Blogspot sites)
- No of Blog post Retweets
- Average number of comments for top 5 posts
- Links to page/ratio
- Social Profiles (whether they have them and size of follower base)
- Page Loading speed
- Readability level
- How often the website is updated (if poss)
- Amount of times appearing in the search results for keywords (position 1, 2, 3 , 4, 5)
- Alexa Rank (although I don't feel confident relying on Alexa)
- Amount of indexed pages
Thanks again for any response and ideas.

....or perhaps prepare a post on another subject.

I kinda had the same impression... if you don't know the powerful sites in your own niche then maybe you need a different niche.
-
I don't know you and don't want to offend you, but if you're putting together a post and asking us for advice on how to do it, then why are you doing the post?
If I walked into a class and the teacher asked me for advice on how to run his class, I would hustle over to the drop/add office.

The most powerful websites in your industry will be the ones that are beating you everywhere... then use the SEOmoz tools to get some data.... then call somebody at each company and they might give you an earful.

How can I track where visitors go after exiting my website?
I don't want to track external links. I just want to know where they go when they leave. Is that possible? Can I do this with a cookie?

Relevancy vs Quality of the website in blog commenting
For example, I would like to comment on a do follow blog with my link inserted in the comment. The blog post is relevant with the link i inserted however there are too many spammy links on the comment. Will this affect my website in terms of "link neighborhood" even my site is relevant to the blog? how do you judge whether the blog is worth commenting and putting your link on it? Does link building on blog comments actually hurt the page rank of websites if it go wrong such as spammy sites?

Methods for estimating competitor website traffic from natural search
Hi all, I'm currently working on some competitor analysis and estimating website traffic based on rankings and estimated search volume for approximately 500 keywords. I'm then estimating based on click through rate from Webmaster tools. I think this will give me a relatively accurate estimation but was wondering how everyone else does this? Any other methods out there? Thanks, Elias

Should I set up multiple websites with keywords in the domain?
I work for an e-commerce brand that manufactures sells 2-3 uniform products for medical professionals. Of course, we set out originally using our brand name as our domain name, and we will continue down that path. However, our best products are the premium lab coats we sell, and we're currently facing an uphill battle for the keyword combo, "lab coats" which is 44% competitive. In our ranking analysis, we can see that we're up against 2 major competitive forces: extremely high domain authority (i.e. Amazon & Ebay), and stores that have the phrase "lab coats" or the word "lab" in their domain name. We recently dropped the hosting package we had with the domain www.scrubsandlabcoats.net (which was redirecting to our primary domain) and our ranking dropped almost immediately afterwards. We put that site back up and now 301 redirect it to our main site but it doesn't look like we restored whatever it was that was in place on that site (before my time) because our rankings haven't improved back to where they were a few months ago. Question is: Would it make sense to purchase a domain with the combination of our brand name and the words "lab coats" and then put up a few pages with links to our top productus OR would that be no more effective than what we already have in place (www.ourdomain.com/lab-coats.html)? Also, any guesses on what kind of crazy set up we used to have on that other domain (scrubsandlabcoats.net) that was helping us in the past? Really appreciate the help!

Why do some websites that have hardly any backlinks, poorly optimised get placed above sites that are doing all they can with SEO?
For example take these two websites. www.rfasecurity.co.uk is a site that Iam working on and have had some success with yet snifferdogs.org.uk seems to be poorly optimised with little backlinks and still gets place higher. is it due to the key word in the domian name? The key search word is sniffer dogs New at this so any help would be appreciated regards Dave

The power of Blog Commenting?
In my link research today I found something interesting. I thought I would share and perhaps get some perspective on it. The term I'm looking into is the moderately competative "cinnamon bread". Not surprisingly, the first page of results is mostly recipes. The first few All Recipes, Pioneer Woman and Joy the Baker are not all that surprising - all pretty big names in the world of online baking. But when I got the the 4th result I thought it was odd - passthesushi.com (more specifically http://passthesushi.com/fluffy-cinnamon-bread) with a DA of 38, respectable but not up there with the "big boys". Her on page elements are standard, not really optimized for much. She has a few hundred Facebook Fans and Google Connect followers. Now even more curious, I looked into her backlinks and discovered a ton of different no follows. She obviously does a lot of commenting on other baking/recipe blogs. Could these no follows be helping her rankings? I was always under the impression blog commenting was more to build a community and get yourself in front of influencers...could these no follows actually be counting towards ranking? Curious to hear some thoughts on this.
