Deep Page is Ranking for Main Keyword, But I Want the Home Page to Rank
-
A deep page is ranking for a competitive and essential keyword, I'd like the home page to rank. The main reasons are probably:
- This specific page is optimized for just that keyword.
- Contains keyword in URL
I've optimized the home page for this keyword as much as possible without sacrificing the integrity of the home page and the other keywords I need to maintain.
My main question is: If I use a 301 redirect on this deep page to the home page, am I risking my current ranking, or will my home page replace it on the SERPs?
Thanks so much in advance!

Thanks for sticking with me on this one. I recognize the things that you're talking about and you're correct on all accounts.
Thanks again.

Your site has the same problem, but not quite as bad. you have many links to 'domain.com/default.aspx' and are then redirected to 'domain.com'
You also have the problem that your site can be accessed though www and non www.
both these problems are robbing your home page of rank.
you also have over 4,000 un-necessary redirects here is an example
The link to "http://www.sfpathway.com/LinkClick.aspx?link=56&tabid=36&mid=432" has resulted in HTTP redirection to "http://www.sfpathway.com/contacts".
You should point these links directly at their final destination ratehr then redierected them, each redirects leaks link juice

URL sent via private message!

I dont think we are on the same page, the server error you show is IIS, but the page i crawled was apache.
i dont think #5 is the same url when i search.
Can you private message me the url, if you dont want it public. thanks

Thanks for your response. I don't return the same result for domain.com/junk. Attaching screenshot.
If you don't mind me asking, what tool did you use to get that link data?

Nice find...

I believe i have found a problem that would lead to bad ranking of your home page.
You have 85 internal links that point to domain.com/index.htm instead of domain.com.
Fromthere they are 302 redirected to domain.com.Link juice frows around your website though internal links, and usually a lot fo it ends back on your home page, but because of the reason above it is not getting back to your home page.
Find all links pointing to index.htm and change them.
Also you should not use 302 redirects they do not pass link juice. you ned to use 301 redirects.
Also if you enter something like domain.com/some-junk-url it redirects to your home page. search engines will dismiss mass redirects to your home page, these shoudl be redirected to a 404 not found page.

Thanks for the response.

I would not do that, at least until you have explored other ideas first.
Do you have a url we can check? Your internal linking can often lead to this.

Should I optimize the login page? Will it affect the website SEO ranking?
I'm trying to resolve the site crawl issues that we have on our website. One of the links that has different issue types together is our login page. Currently we have two login pages that have the same content but different sub domains. **However I'm wondering if optimizing SEO on our login pages affects our website SEO ranking and if it's something better to do or not. ** To point out the details of the issues, the issue types that the logins pages have are "duplicate title", "duplicate content", "missing H1", "missing description", "thin content", "missing canonical tag" I'd appreciate your help, thank you!

How to rank same page for multiple related keywords
We need some of our pages to rank for multiple related keywords. But we cannot optimise one page for multiple keywords which might end up ranking for none of them; at the same time we cannot optimise it for one keyword as we ignore other keywords. I think creating multiple landing pages for very related keywords will confuse users and search engines as well. How to handle this?

How To Rank Our Featured Snippet - What Changes Are Needed On Our Page?
I've read a number of articles that have been helpful, but most of them are specifically still just trying to prove the value of the snippets and more recently show you how to find what search terms to rank for. What I'm really struggling with is exactly 'How do we rank for them, when we already have the #1 position and the featured snippet is going to another site'? Let me break this down a bit more: 1. We are measuring the 'SERP Features' within Moz Pro Tools and I've identified ~300 pages where there is a 'Featured Snippet' but I don't have the feature. 2. In a good portion of these, I'm outranking the site that has the 'Featured Snippet'. So I can compare my site, side by side to the 'Featured Snippet'. Now that I have the question, my ranking and the competition all in front of me. What changes are recommended I implement on our page? Is there a recommended process to follow?

404 Pages. Can I change it to do this without getting penalized ? I want to lower our bounce rate from these pages to encourage the user to continue on the site
Hi All, We have been streaming our site and got rid of thousands of pages for redundant locations (Basically these used to be virtual locations where we didn't have a depot although we did deliver there and most of them was duplicate/thin content etc ). Most of them have little if any link value and I didn't want to 301 all of them as we already have quite a few 301's already We currently display a 404 page but I want to improve on this. Current 404 page is - http://goo.gl/rFRNMt I can get my developer to change it, so it will still be a 404 page but the user will see the relevant category page instead ? So it will look like this - http://goo.gl/Rc8YP8 . We could also use Java script to show the location name etc... Would be be okay ? or would google see this as cheating. basically I want to lower our bounce rates from these pages but still be attractive enough for the user to continue in the site and not go away. If this is not a good idea, then any recommendations on improving our current 404 would be greatly appreciated. thanks Pete

How is my 301 redirected site stealing rankings from the main site?
Hello, I have a site, drhobelt.com, that 301 redirects to the main site, drhonow.com. Not only is drhobelt.com still indexed, but it recently stole rankings from drhonow.com for "decompression belt" related terms. What could be causing this? How do I reclaim the rankings for drhonow.com? Thanks for reading!!

Home Page or Internal Page
I have a website that deals with personalized jewelry, and our main keyword is "Name Necklace".
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Tiedemann_Anselm
3 mounth ago i added new page: http://www.onecklace.com/name-necklaces/ And from then google index only this page for my main keyword, and not our home page.
Beacuase the page is new, and we didn't have a lot of link to it, our rank is not so well. I'm considering to remove this page (301 to home page), beacause i think that if google index our home page for this keyword it will be better. I'm not sure if this is a good idea, but i know that our home page have a lot of good links and maybe our rank will be higher. Another thing, because google index this internal page for this keyword, it looks like our home page have no main keyword at all. BTW, before i add this page, google index our main page with this keyword. Please advise... U5S8gyS.png j50XHl4.png0 -
Manage Ranking for " Out of Stock" pages
Hi, I own an e-commerce marketplace where the products are sold by 3rd party sellers and purchased by end users. My problem is that whenever a new product is added the search engine crawls the website and it ranks the new page on 4th page. when I start optimizing it to gain better rankings in search engines the product goes out of stock and the rankings drop to below 100. To counter that I started showing other related products on the "Out of Stock" pages but even then the rankings are dropping. Can someone help me with this problem?
