Is there a better keyword tool than google's adwords keyword tool?
-
I have heard a lot of people say not to trust the results of google adword's keyword tool. Is there a better tool out there that i am not aware of that can judge local monthly and global monthly search volume?
-
Google don't give exact numbers and don't get specific about what the numbers do represent, but it is very handy to compare phrases - which is more popular, etc. - in deciding which to use on your site. The main reason why I didn't Wordtracker a few years ago was that I needed to know usage based on location and, as far as I know, Google is the only one that can give that kind of detail.
-
I realize you posted this almost a year ago, so my reply is going to seem random. I found this thread through a search because right now I'm considering trying Wordtracker's paid keyword research tool and wondering whether it's worth the money. I use AdWords right now, but sometimes I question the results for the exact reason you mentioned.
Anyway, I just wanted to ask: In your experience, is Wordtracker's paid tool better than AdWords for keyword research?
Thanks and sorry this is so out-of-the-blue.

I find Google Adwords a great tool for the most part.
One thing I have noticed though is Google Places is being tweaked almost daily and some days a keyword I'm chasing will be #1,2,3 organically but is so far down the first page behind all the Google Places listings that chasing that keyword is next to useless (unless they rearrange Google Places again).
Learn from my mistake- do your keyword research and then Google the term when you're logged out!

I read that the google keyword tool is only applicable to their paid results. I was finding completely different results when using the wordtracker keyword tool.

But i do face some weird data from Google Adword tool yesterday. For 2 most generic Japanese keywords ラップトップ(meaning laptop) & ノートパソコン(meaning notebook), I searched both exact & broad in Japan country and Japanese language, Google adword gave me no result for exact & broad ラップトップsearch and no result for exact ノートパソコン. This result makes no sense to me at all. Have anyone come cross this before?

For a time (October-December 2010, if not earlier), the AdWords Keyword Tool was ignoring keywords that were not commercial in nature, and there was much outcry from the community. For the following two links, the first link is from when they removed non-commercial intent and lists several keyword alternatives. The second post is an update, with information about how Google has improved their keyword tool. This may be one of the reasons you've heard people say not to trust the results.

Thumbs up!
I have heard lots of people complain about the tool giving high numbers and then when you point out that they are looking at broad match numbers they realize their error.
-
Are you checking broad or exact match phrases?
car insurance and insurance car are equal because these are broad match types
[car insurance] and [insurance car] are very different because these are exact match types
Numbers are rounded in order to make them easier to read and manage. 195,000 is easier to read than 194,793 and that slight difference doesn't really matter. Same with 590 and 587.
The "reliable source" you linked is a forum where an unknown person posted a message. That is not something I would rely on. Read more about SERP CTR and check your website's data and you will see that the numbers are roughly correct.
-
Probably because they've realized this and act accordingly. take adwords keyword volumes with a grain of salt. or perhaps they have another tool to cross reference??
-
I'm sure there are other sources, i don't have the time to dig them all up. I'm actually kind of shocked that you guys have never heard someone say that google adwords keyword tool's estimated search volumes are inflated.
How about the fact that most of the numbers are rounded. and that two word phrases are always estimated at the exact same value.
for example: it would say that the global monthly searches for "word1 word2" is the same as "word2 word1", for any combination of two words. I find that incredibly hard to believe because it is very unlikely that there is exactly a 50% split between them. what about phrases where it is much more logical that the order is word1 word2, instead of word2 word1?
-
There're researches about the SERP CTRs and sometimes I compare these research values to my websites' traffic data. I haven't experienced major differences between the Keyword Tool's and my websites' results, it seems to be accurate.
Can you give us a reliable source of information for these claims?
-
If that is the case then why isn't every adwords marketer on the planet yelling about it?
I don't hear them.
-
I know that yahoo used to have a keyword resarch tool, where did that go? i can't find it anywhere anymore, all the links to it are dead. even a link from their own website to it is dead.
Is it absorbed into microsoft now?
-
I disagree. It isn't entirely in their best interests to provide entirely accurate search volume information. In fact it is much more exciting to see that a keyword has 5000 monthly searches than to see a keyword only has 5 monthly searches. It is entirely in their best interest to inflate the search volumes, as it encourages more sales from novice users that don't realize their numbers are inflated.

EGOL has a way of sharing the answer is such a short, to the point and yet well polished manner. I whole-heartedly agree!

Who but Google could provide better information about Google? And, since Google is going to make money from your ads they should do their best to direct you to the proper keywords.

How is it possible to rank first for a keyword, when the keyword isn't written on the page?
I noticed that one of our competitors is ranking in first position for a keyword but when looking on the page grader. The exact keyword is not used on the page at all (or in title, URL etc.). How is this possible, when other sites have content with those exact words?

I understand it's been asked before, however moz staff is telling me keyword's capitalization is treated as a separate keyword.
So there I was looking through my rankings like every other day, when I see a lowercase and uppercase version of a keyword. Most times I see this, I see them with the same rankings, and even researched this about 5 months ago, when I came to the conclusion that google treats them the same way. However, this day I saw them as different ranks, same keyword, only capitalized 1st letter of the 2 word keyword. I asked moz staff about this, as I felt it was an error. But was met with the answer that google does indeed treat these keywords differently. My line of thought was that the rank checker didn't check both the lowercase and uppercase keyword at the same time, and SERPs happened to change when the second word was checked for rank, returning a different rank. So now, I am in doubt again, as to uppercase and lowercase keywords being different or the same in google's eyes? I honestly don't know why a uppercase keyword would have different motive from searcher than a lowercase when many time not, searchers can't even spell the keyword correctly.

Multilingual keyword research
Does anyone have any experience in multilingual SEO? We are looking for software that conducts research for GEO Locations such as UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan & India. Writing content for each of these countries is difficult unless we speak their language, we could look at outsourcing the translation but conducting keyword research for each location is almost impossible.

How accurate is Googles Keyword Planner?
I did some keyword research for our company. Some of the terms we got 100,000 search volume for in 2011 now have only 90 monthly searches. I am doing exact match for both US and Global and neither are any where near those high of numbers. Now I can't say how the old report on this was done but we are all a little skeptical of these numbers. Is there any other tool out there for search volume on Google? The Moz tool while it lists Google as an option only does Bing. Thank you!

How many keywords is too many?
Hi there Moz'ers, I run a mens fashion brand called THE AFFAIR, where we craft premium T-shirts and Art Prints inspired by your favourite books. So my problem is that I have no idea what to try to rank for keyword wise because every product is inspired by a different book and author. Whilst I could go very wide and try for terms such as "graphic t-shirts" or "printed t-shirts" they are a) super competitive and b) bear no relation to the primary selling point being the literature inspired basis of what we do. But on the flip side, there's just not that many people searching for "Jules Verne t-shirts" or even "Adventure t-shirts" to go a little wider at the genre level. Basically I'm confused at a conceptual level about how to best select my keywords and desperately need some help before running down the wrong path! For what it's worth the site is built on WP (using WooCommerce) and I have installed Yoast and begin playing around with it... But anyway it's the larger strategy that has me stumped at the moment and I really don't know where to begin. Thanks for your time and all comments very much appreciated. FREE T-SHIRT to whoever has the best solution 🙂 cheers

Big difference in rank on google.com and google.no
Hi Our E-com website went from 8th to 1st spot yesterday for our most important keyword (barneklær = childrens clothing) on google.no weirdly enough we arent ranking on first page at all on google.com . I find this very strange especially since the keyword itself is so country specific - mainly because of the norwegian specific letter - æ. The results are not due to personalization i ve check it with the keyword difficulty tool here on seomoz. The sites ranking higher then me on google.com are sites i am ranking higher then on google.no. Anyone got a good explanation ? The changes for my keyword in ranking i saw yesterday was alot more then i am used to see - almost like google made some sort of script change. we went from 8th to 1st. 1st dropped to 4th, 5ht went to 2nd etc - i am not used to seeing this big changes. Anyone got a clue to either of these 2 questions ?

Google keyword tool
Hey anyone noticed Google's keyword tool seems to be returning weird data for search volume compared to just a few days ago? "iron fist clothing" exact match was returning around 1,000 local monthly searches and a monthly trend of approximately the same over the past year. As of yesterday it has zero searches for exact match and even the monthly trends have all been set to zero for every month going back a year Now I suppose this could happen in theory but the fact that the trend is showing up as zero for each month over the last year makes me think this could be a bug. I've also noticed this for one of my keywords on my SEO site, again suddenly gone to zero searches and monthly trends going back a year. However a quick check on webmaster tools shows the impressions going back a few months at the average of 1,300 that the old trend suggested it should be. Anyone else noticed this?
