Changing my site (dramatically)
-
I am about to do a complete site change. I am going to WordPress. I am ranked #2 on SERPS. Will I lose rank for changing everything on my site? I have 500 pages indexed but I am about to have 30k indexed. It is a real estate site that is switching from a "framed" solution, to a listing indexed solution.
If I make good use of my keywords etc (on site optimization) will I be at risk of losing risk just for changing my site?

I have thousands of duplicate content warning.
I am using a hosted server/realtor package that doesn't let me see the source code. I basically have duplicates of every page on my site some how. I've used the company for 8 yrs though. I am in deep trouble. I fear I can't stay with them.

Joseph,
In scenarios like these, I put together a site map and review the overall value of the site and what it's providing to it's users.
Once I know what the value that I am currently providing, I put together an action plan (301 redirects, site optimization, site architecture etc...) with the proposed site changes and see if it will benefit the visitor by restructuring the site.
Once you are able to visualize the overall flow of the old site and the new site then you make decisions on whether or not it's worth while to move forward. Keep in mind that whatever you are doing has to give users a reason to use your website and stay on it.
It's possible you should start with some conversion optimization of certain pages to find where your leaks are, try and plug them and keep forging forward.
If you find that it's impossible to plug the leaks in your current structure than you may need to do what you are describing in your post.

No, no - if you set up the 301s then the originals don't have to remain. A visiting browser knows right away that the old page is gone and has bene permanently replaced.
However, Egol's advice is spot-on. This is complicated, and you have a LOT of pages involved. Your best bet is to hire an expert to help you with this. It may cost you some $$, but it'll pay off in a hurry.
I'm not pitching myself here - in fact, keep me out of the running so that it's clear I have no axe to grind.
But this is very, very technically complex.
-
This may be harder than I could have imagined. If 90% of the backlinks on my site are my root domain (PensacolaRealEstate.com) then I should not lose any link juice, right? The backlinks will lead to my root domain, period; however, if I change my site and cut off some of the URLs then I lose the backlinks to that page. This could cause my domain authority (a sum of ALL my backlinks to ALL my pages in the domain) but not my page strength (the root domain). Right?
If I were to set up these 301 redirects, it means I have to leave the files for those pages on the server but not actually link my new site to them, right?
-
Don't rush into this. You gotta do it smart.
When you change your site the goal should be to improve it and make it more competitive.
That is done by carefully improving the structure and the optimization... and also preserving your link assets with 301 redirects. Also avoiding problems like changing the URLs without redirecting.
If you don't know how to do these things it is essential to get a competent person to help you or to do it for you. There are lots of good instructions for moving a site on the web.
Now... your 30K pages.... Those could suck a lot of strength from your site. These could produce a duplicate content problem (Panda).
I would not be surprised if your rankings dropped after adding them. To minimize ranking loss you want to have very few links into them from the rest of your site and all of those pages linking out generously to the rest of your site.
To minimize panda problems you might combine some of these listings, placing several on a page. This page count reduction can reduce the rankings loss.
The problem with that is having enough links into those pages to get them indexed and hold them in the index. So if you put all of them up at the same time you will need fifty to sixty really strong links that hit nodes deep in the site. These links will channel spiders deep into the site and force them to chew their way out through those pages, indexing them as they go.
These links must be permanent or be held in place until other links are developed. If you remove them then google spider action will fall on those pages and google will forget them.
If you don't have experience with big sites find someone who has that experience who can help you design the structure of these new pages.
(not recommending myself... I only work on my own sites)

Chances are the listings are repeated on other web sites, so those probably won't have much positive impact on your rankings. They shouldn't do much harm, either, except that Google's going to waste a lot of time crawling all those duped pages.
The best way to preserve what you can is to ensure that you redirect all of the old page addresses to their new equivalents. So, if you have a page like:
and it will now be:
Set up a 301 redirect from the first to the second URL. That will ensure that search engines can quickly update their indexes.
Also, be sure to set up a full XML site map and submit it to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools. That'll give you very rapid feedback regarding any problems.

301 Redirect to external site
Hi guys, We have a client who is getting their website redesigned through us. They are discontinuing couple of their services which will not get featured in the new site. They are fairly well ranked for these services and my client wishes to 301 redirect these pages to an external site owned by his friend so that they benefit out of the ranking. The question is: Will my client's website's general ranking get affected due to 301 redirecting to an external site? The external site is not spammy or red-flagged by Google (at the moment, at least). Thanks in advance!

Keyword usage in eCommerce Sites - Danger of keyword stuffing?
Hi all, I'm having a little difficulty deciding the best approach for selecting my product titles as I've encountered a few issues. I understand how important it is to try and use the keyword in your product titles, but about the category page that lists all of these products? One of category pages, for example, has 16 products on it. Each has the product title followed by the keyword. I have also used the keyword in the category title, URL, breadcrumbs and two or 3 times (because it was natural) in a paragraph that describes the category etc. Due to the little amount of text on the page, and the sheer amount of times that the keyword is being used, it looks like I am keyword stuffing (By Moz On Page Report Card). I think it came to 23 uses of the same keyword altogether. This is the pretty much teh same throughout every category page on my site, and think I was penalised by Google for this reason. I'm a relatively new site and have done everything by the book as far as I know, so everything is pointing at this to be the cause of the drop/disappearance in ranking. How do I rectify this problem? It's important for the products to have the keyword in, right? As this is one of the SEO practices that is given more weight when considering rankings. I have thought a potential way around this, which is to split the keyword between an exact match, and a variant of the keyword in the titles - only very slightly though. So my product titles would look like 'Product A Exact Match Keyword', 'Product B Variant on Keyword' etc. Could this work? Can anybody advise on the best thing I could try? I have attached an image to give you an idea of the layout of my category pages - Apologies in advance about my embarrassingly rubbish photoshop skills! I wasn't able to upload directly, so I have attached a link. Thanks for reading, John 4iIkmSx

Nofollow within your site, is it ever a good idea?
I started a new job running a companies E-commerce site. I have been going thought the site, backlinks etc to see what the current status is. I have noticed that they have "no followed some categorises on the (huge) mega menu, but also they have no followed every product form categories. Now personally I would have no follows on the login/register/checkout page, and maybe some external links, but my understanding has always been that by using no follow on internal links you just throwing away google juice. I'm thinking was someone at some stage trying to do some misguided link sculpting with no follow, or I'm I missing something Note: the company does not have brands per say for the product pages and so are not landing pages (the categories are landing pages)

Good Site Navigation verses Success
I have been experimenting with the number of links on our pages verses the number of hits we get. Success seems to be tied to having hundreds of links on a page verses ease of navigation. We have a research company that sells research on educational topics. Last November I decided to divide our category of literature research topics into 10 different subtopics and redistribute the links to the subtopic pages. The main literature research page had over 800 links on it. It was one of our top performing pages. I was hoping that by spreading the links out in logical categories i could distribute the wealth and have better navigation for the user. Now after 6 months the traffic to that page has dropped 800% and the sub-pages have only gained a very minimal percentage. Overall, the hits in the literature genre have dropped from 560 per month to around 80. Ouch! I thought Google would love this strategy, as it reduced page load time, links on a page and made the navigation logical and easier to see all available options. Not the case. Question is: Should I keep the subpages but go back and put all the links back on the main literature page, putting it back up to 800 links? Should I get rid of the subpages, because the links will all be on the main literature page if I move them? Any advice is appreciated! Karen

How do you avoid getting hit for too many links with an ecommerce site?
On my campaign for www.fourcolormagnets.com one of my warnings was "too many on-page links". Is there any thing to do for ecommerce sites? and also, my page www.fourcolormagnets.com/rectangle-sizes.php is listed as having 744 links but, I count nowhere near that number. And idea where this comes from?

On-Site Optimization and Repeat Customers
Hello, One of my clients has repeat customers. All of his surface level categories are optimized. None of his 2nd or 3rd level categories are optimized at all. Is there any harm in optimizing these 2nd or 3rd level categories. Is there any way it could cause a problem with repeat customers? I didn't think so but I want to make sure. Thanks!

Main Page title change.
Hi, For some reason every week or two I am changing the title tag of my main page. Each change takes place because I find new version better than the old one. Does this have any impact on my SEO results (I'm keeping the main keywords each time) ? If it has an impact is it positive or negative ? And should I stick to one title and not change it under any circumstances for long periods of time ? Thanks!
