Ranking better with worse figures
-
Six months ago a competitor e-commerce site appeared in the top 10. Now six months later he is at #2. (for the main keyword in my sector in Dutch language, competition +4 million)
My site is 4 years old and since three years ranks at #1 or 2. I'm now at #3, behind the competitors site.
My competitor has a HomePage PA of 36 with 2295 links from 26 domains, root domain DA 23 with 175000 links from 30 domains.
My site has a HomePage PA of 49 with 6975 links froms 238 domains, root domain DA 40 with 310023 links from 269 domains.
I have more specific landing pages, better and more content, code W3C checked ....
Can somebody explain why a younger site with worse figures gets a better position in Google ranking?

Thanks Marek for the usefull words. Yes I still use meta-keywords as there is also Bing and Yahoo. But of course you are right about differing the description tags. I will change them asap.
Actually all this is about the Dutch version where I have "only" +4.000.000 competition for the keyword Lighting in Dutch. I don't even want to try to compete in English with that word. But then I compete with the Brand names and get my English speaking customers anyway.
Thanks again !

Sometimes it is been hard to understand but never give up
you still using meta-keywords ... they can only help the competition not google position.
meta - description tags are all the same for different pages.
If yes it can be a main reason. You have to diversify descriptions and they have to be consistent with title and page content.
e.g. for <title></span></span><span style="color: #5e5e5e; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span><span> </span>Buy LED lighting at the best price.</span></span><span style="color: #5e5e5e; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"><span></title>
in description use: name="Description" content="LED lighting is the latest craze. ..... an so on about LED up to 140 characters">

H-tags, titles, speed, and much more, I am very aware of the importance and using. What worries me more than being dropped on #3 is that a site, appearing from nowhere, in 6 months can get to the top. This site is in all ways inferior to mine, I mean inferior in terms of what google thinks is important. Their content is fresher of course and they have less nearly dupicate content. But it seems to me that history has no weight anymore. It seems that once you are ther for three years, you are damn dificult to be caught. Seems I am wrong.
For my understanding, analysing the results for years, sooner or later the mechanism, the algorithm behind (from Google) must become clear. Thousands of people are on top and after making an inventory of everything possible that can be important, I don't discover new things anymore. It seems that they have some secret arguments left as, as you told yourself, in many cases the logic based on what is known is far far away.
And no, their domain is as bad as mine I started my site without knowing that a keyword in a domain name is important.
What I see is that in the top 10 there are 9 .be domains and only mine is a .com. Maybe Googles starts to give importance at local domains.
And no again, I don't have many G+1, but they don't neither. I have many pages on Facebook, a page on LinkedIn, a blog with my Google identity, an author link on my site pointing to this identity .... I'm getting out of arguments !

Maybe, I never got attention for PA and DA. Only after starting to use SEOmoz that I became aware. But my links are good, are many, my content and keywords optimal, my code good, my speed fast. I have some nearly duplicate content as I have 27000 products on my site and the difference between product A and B can be very small giving nearly identical product pages. But this was as such since the beginning. Maybe Google has more attention for this now than some years ago.
-
Thanks for your answer. No, I am quiet sure that my platform is the best what I can get in my country. I was aware that a platform can be important for ranking as speed is important for google.

I have many examples of such a situation. In my work I won with Nikon Academy (akademianikona.pl) - site supported by Nikon with huge number of links and better statistics.
Refresh you content.
I agree with EGOL and Gordon. What I want to add ... think that internal consistency of the site is very important. Good content structure (H -tags, content with keywords) - title - description - url should be the first elements of the subjects of your mind.
Also very important is competitors tracking. What do they have that you do not have? Maybe they follow some (local ... global) trends? Social impact is another area to check - do you have many G+1, FB shares, votes etc...
Check technical issues like page load speed and other
And last but not least - what is their domain name - is it better that yours?
some other ideas to improvement (simple report) link
Good luck Rik

Just a hypothesis here, it could be based on the platform you are using. Some ecommerce platforms rank better in google, an example of this is that the ecommerce platform "magento" is seo friendlier than other ecommerce platforms. That could be a reason that it is ranking better with "worse" statistics.
Another hypothesis is that their onsite is better with less errors and less duplicate content and therefore being penalized less.
Hope that Helps

I can only echo EGOL.
Keep working at quality content, relevant links etc. if your efforts continue, there is every chance you will be back on top.

Can somebody explain why a younger site with worse figures gets a better position in Google ranking?
Maybe because the figures that you are looking at are different from what google is using to rank the pages. I think that the figures that you are looking at are good for tracking your progress over time but they obviously are not what google is using.

Image attatched... How is it possible to rank on Google Norway for spot nr.1 (page in English language) and spot nr.2 (page in Norwegian language) , when all you competitors have higher PA, DA and a lot more backlinks and better on-page optimization according to MOZ? Is there something I´m misunderstanding?

At a bit of a loss as to poor rankings
I have a site in the UK, with these metrics: 15 years old 500 pages in sitemap, but Majestic says 186,000 indexed URLs ? DA of 45, PR of 3 1000 links from 200 linking root domains, across from 150 IP's (from OSE) 33,000 links in OSE when I use the compare tool and look at the "links to this root domain" section 24,000 external links according to Majestic 350 shares, 2,000 tweets, 60 +1's Median PA of linking root domains (from OSE export) = 20 no Moz on-page errors, or webmaster tools issues The above metrics are better than 2 competitors who have only just launched, have fewer links, lower DA, etc, and are ranking for keywords like "wedding entertainment", "corporate entertainers" Our site is www.superted.com Why doesn't OSE show 33,000 links when I select "links to this root domain". Why will those links only be shown when I do a domain comparison in OSE? I'm thinking our anchor text distribution is the problem. We have very few links containing the keywords want. Also maybe our sitemap is an issue as it only lists 500 of our pages? But given our domain age, DA, etc... surely anchor text / site map isn't the only issue here? Any hints would be awesome.

Majestic gives me a 24 situation and 24 trust flow. Seomoz just a total number of 7\. How come the difference? My ranking is still bad, so is Majestic crawling faster then google?
Hi, my total domain value number on SEOmoz is 7. In Majestic it is 24 situation and 24 trust flow. My ranking is still bad (page2) and my competitors have a lower trust/ situation flow in Majestic. But in Seomoz the're better. Is the conclusion that Majestic is more up to date then Google itself and that Seomoz is more inline with the google crawling? Because Majestic doesnt reflect my ranking. (ps I started with the domain for a month, and I only have some history in registration)

How can stale, poor quality sites rank above fresh, high quality sites?
Dear Community, How is it that a Google search for temperature sensors shows the second result as site **A **(http://goo.gl/zRS1L) in a higher positionthan site B (http://goo.gl/3Xy2O) which is on the 2nd page of the SERPs. Site A blatantly does not follow Google's webmaster guidelines and recommendations for design, content or code. Site B scores an 'A' for on page analysis using SEOmoz, it also has a much higher number of root domains in and Moz rank, we have checked that site B has only quality inbound links, and anchor text is natural, it follows Google's guidelines for content and code diligently, and it is on an older domain. We are satisfied that site B has not been penalised by Google, e.g Penguin algorithm updates. We have also done a website verification with Google. Site B has fresher content compared to site A. Site B also has a sitemap yet site A doesn't. We're satisfied that we can rule out the following Algorithm Factors: Penguin algorithm updates Google Notified penalties Dodgy Inbound links Dodgy Anchor text Website verification with Google Fresh vs. static content Sitemap present Server Speed Server location Domain age and about 170 other algorithm factors Does anyone have any ideas as to why site A is ranking higher than site B in Google.co.uk? Thanks in advance. CD.

Competitor's Ranking's Reports are Showing Blank Values for Rankings
When selecting competitors to see how they rank for specific terms in the ranking's report page here, it loads the page normally, but without any actual rankings. Where values should be, it lists all values as our competition not ranking whatsoever (for all competitors). I'm not sure if there is something we're doing wrong, or perhaps we just need to wait for a refresh, but if anybody could help out, that would be wonderful!

How does this domain / page rank for this particular term?
Hi everyone, I'm wondering whether someone can enlighten me as to how a particular page / domain is ranking for a term that the page appears to be in no way optimised to receive traffic to. The search engine is Google Australia and the Search Term (albiet low volume) is "Bunbury Builders" the top organic result is the homepage for "Content Living" www.contentliving.com.au/ There is one single mention of Bunbury on the page (as a phone number in the footer of the page). I've disabled javascript, css, and spoofed my user agent as Googlebot and I can't see anything suspect going on here at all. I also ran the domain through open site explorer and I couldn't find a single anchor text reference to bunbury directing visitors back to this domain. We haven't yet begun targeting this term, but I was curious to see (for my own education as much as anything else) how they were achieving this ranking position. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Questiton about new ranking factors
Hi, I am new to seomoz and i was very much impressed with the stuff here in seomoz. The tools here in seomoz are very helpful to me . And i was doing good with the help of seomoz. But due to recent google's algo panda 2.0 update. I was bit confused about new ranking factors that google has released. I can see here in seomoz also that page level link metrics has good importance than backlinks now. Earlier google algo gives main importance to backlinks now i can see in the list it went to bottom. Can you help in explaining these things, on which things i need to concentrate on and does backlinks really count now?? Many people stopped concentrating on backlinks now and are going for facebook likes and tweets. Here is the good example that i can see: www.hotfilesearch.com which is a flle search engine. He was one of the competitor for me . He ranked very good in a short span of time, all he did was he bought some really good paid links and within 6 moths he was on top. Now i can see he was dropping out every link he has. But though he was ranking pretty good on the web. I really in need of your suggestions to optimize my site. Awaiitng for your reply.. Regards Dheeraj

Competitor Ranking High has 2 Domains, But Duplicate Website ?
I was using OSE and noticed all the backlinks to one of our competitors is there other domain name, which is the EXACT SAME website. You can enter both url's and they display the same content. They are not useing any canonical tags either. Why are they not penalized for duplicate content? And for using there own website for backlinks ? We try to do everything right, but still cannot beat them. Any thoughts on this?
