Any tips for optimising for Local Search/Google Places
-
I have a client that used to come up on Google Places consistently for some very competitive keywords - when they ranked quite low for them through their normal website - places would see them above all the organic results in normally number 2 position - whereas they would rank between 16 - 26 normally
We have optimised the site and have 'A' grade keywords for the ones we are interested in google placing for and just recently we are out of it all together, even though we have improved their optimisation for that word with SEO
Someone said that their phone number on the website had to match perfectly with google places and so does their address. Is this true? Is there anything else that will help them keep their position in places ? ie. setting up a Google + page etc.,
Any advise would be appreciated
thanks

Hi Maria, I see you've started 2 threads here with the same question. I've responded to the version of your question, here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/optimising-for-local-search#post-149218

Hi Bede,
thanks for your informative reply - I have checked all the points above and do have a number of issues of concern
1. The competition has received more reviews lately
2. There are duplicate listing as they are an accommodation provider and they are listed on booking agencies - so their name comes up for these booking agency ads on maps.google.com - but not with their address or phone number details and I assume the same would be for their competitors also so I don't think this is the major contributor.
however I am worried as the business name of my client - includes the city they are in and one of the major keywords - their name is Vintages Margaret River - their website is www.vintagesmargaretriver.com.au and they are competing for the keywords - accommodation Margaret River and Margaret River accommodation - what would you recommend? Any thoughts?
thanks
Maria

Hi Maria, There are a number of factors that influence ranking, but it sounds like there was a ranking drop recently afte r you made some changes. How soon after you made changes to the site to did the drop occur, and what changes did you make to the site? I ask because, since the end of 2010 rankings in local search are generally a combination of the SEO/authority of the site itself and the optimization/citations/reviews of the listing. If you changed something on the site, it could impact local rankings, too. For the phone number and address, it should match, but unless you are seeing duplicate listings, or you changed it significantly, then it's unlikely that this is the problem. If Google is not creating duplicate listings, then it's likely it will recognize the information. To cover these things, I would check to make sure that: - There are no duplicate listings suddenly appearing - search for phone number+business name, address, business name+city, and any other combinations you can come up with. Do this on maps.google.com as well as google.com. If you want to be really thorough, check http://www.google.com/mapmaker as well. - Their places listing is still active (e.g. no "needs attention" etc.) - That you can access their listing by clicking on it. I know this sounds odd, but sometimes there's an error that says "we do not support this location" which needs to be dealt with. I believe this is becoming less and less common. - The client hasn't suddenly lost reviews - No one attempted to merge a Google+ page with the local listing without your knowledge If all of the above is working correctly, and you've made no major changes to the site that could cause issues, I would check out what the competition is doing. Do any of them suddenly have more reviews? Is someone cheating and putting the business category or city in their business name? These things might cause a rankings drop by bumping you down. If that's not happening, then it's time to start checking things off against the following post: http://www.davidmihm.com/local-search-ranking-factors.shtml Some of these things you can influence, some of them you can't. Assuming that your listing has the right categories, and a good description, the two main things you should focus on are building citations and building decent reviews. Hopefully this helps! Bede

Should I create a Google Places listing for an online only store?
We currently run an e-commerce store that is online only. We do have an office address that I could list for Google Places, but it is not open to visitors so I am not sure if this would contravene the TOS. At the moment we are in the process of trying to build reviews and Google's revamped 'Places for Businesses' looks like it would be a great tool for monitoring and responding to reviews. From what I can see, though, it is only available to those with a Google Places listing. I am also looking into independent review services, but typically these cost £100 per month minimum, whereas Places for Business would be free. Is there a way that we can use Google Places to build reviews, given that we do not have an actual shopfront? If not, does anyone have any advice on how an online only store can build reviews in the same manner using Google's own tools?

Business with Google + Business Page not showing with map
Hi I set up a Google + business Page for a client and we claimed their address (it shows in the Google Maps page fine. The page has been created for a while now but when you search for this business it does not show the map to the right? Any thoughts? BTW we have two locations and both have separate pages - thought this could be the issue but then when I added the business name + the location still not showing.

Prioritising certain images in search results
I am currently putting together a website for my hobby (collecting cycling jerseys) that I can then use to improve my SEO knowledge. I have tried to optimize the image names so that when somebody searches for a particular item, the image is shown in Google Images. For example; if you type in "ADR jersey" in google; it gives the following image; http://cycling-jersey-collection.com/images/150px/2013-02-07-adr-fangio-ioc-mbk-1987-team-retro-jersey-maillot-trikot.jpg Whereas I want it to prioritize this one; http://cycling-jersey-collection.com/images/2013-02-07-adr-fangio-ioc-mbk-1987-team-retro-jersey-maillot-trikot.jpg The smaller image is used on a "Browse" the collection page whereas the bigger one is just used on the single, specific page. Can anybody offer any up-to-date advice? Thanks! Andy

What to do if your categories are missing from Google Places/Plus page?
A client's Google Places/Plus page used to show four or five categories. Now, Google only shows one category. When I go inside their edit page, all of the categories are still listed. Is this a temporary occurrence? Does anyone have a similar experience or advice on this?None of the competitors seem to have the same issue. Ever since the Google plus integration, it's been impossible to see any changes updated.

Url in Google Places bulk upload
Hi, I'm preparing a bulk upload for Google Places and have a question about the url of every individual place. The website is structured this was: www.website.com/entrepreneur-X
Image & Video Optimization | | nvs.nim
www.website.com/entrepreneur-Y
... But you can reach every individual entrepreneur like this as well: www.entrepreneur-x.com
www.entrepreneur-y.com
...these URL's redirect to the pages listed above and they use the e-mail address info@entrepreneur-y.com Should I use www.website.com/entrepreneur-X or www.entrepreneur-x.com in the bulk upload? I think it's best using www.website.com/entrepreneur-x because the other url is a redirect. What do you guys think??1 -
Local Ranking Factors Question
Local SERPS continue to confuse me. I feel like I can tell what's going on but I'm never right. How do these two listings rank for "best bar" in the local Chicago SERPS? It's the same if you search for "best bar in chicago". http://maps.google.com/maps/place?hl=en&biw=2109&bih=1218&noj=1&gs_upl=3495l4209l0l4335l8l5l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=best+bar&fb=1&gl=us&hq=best+bar&hnear=0x880e2c3cd0f4cbed:0xafe0a6ad09c0c000,Chicago,+IL&cid=17128325649974296516 or http://maps.google.com/maps/place?hl=en&biw=2109&bih=1218&noj=1&gs_upl=3495l4209l0l4335l8l5l0l0l0l0l0l0ll0l0&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=best+bar&fb=1&gl=us&hq=best+bar&hnear=0x880e2c3cd0f4cbed:0xafe0a6ad09c0c000,Chicago,+IL&cid=455944883716881589&ei=aQPqTo7mN4mIgwe4oc3fCA&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=placepage-link&resnum=5&ved=0CFgQ4gkwBA This has had me stumped for months. I've analyzed everything and there aren't any good indicators as to how this was done. The former doesn't even have a website. The latter example has some category keyword stuffing, which I don't get why they're account hasn't been suspended because of it. It also has a very small and not very powerful link profile. Any insights would be much appreciated!

Google Places - Under Review
Working with a new company. In the Google places listing they have two listings...obvious duplications created under the same account. Both show as "Under Review" and have been for months. SHould I try and delete one listing (tried...has not worked so far), delete both and start over? This is one of several franchises in the same area with similar names and similar issues, as well as older companies that bought the franchise and still show in Google Places with old phone number and address. Any help appreciated.
