Do pages with fewer headings rank higher?
-
I've found several good quality, high ranking pages with excellent content, 500 to 1000 words. These pages are made by people who obviously know what they're doing.
These pages only have one headline the h1 at the top of the page.
Some of the sites use CSS div boxes and other things to make text look like a heading but do not have h2 or h3 tags or bigger font size.
Could it be that a single headline tells Google that this page is about a single topic and that several sub headings muddy the water and so reduce page rank.
Do multiple headings or subheadings affect page rank or is it just a personal style choice?

Hello Tommy
This is the type of site I'm talking about. It's full of good content, ranks highly and looks professional.http://www.seomark.co.uk/how-many-backlinks/
But the pages that have what look like subheadings are just CSS classes. Many of the pages don't have any sub headings at all.
The person who made the site obviously knows what he's doing, I wondered if he knew something I don't.

Hi Philip,
It is strange that top rate SEO consultants are doing so. In the video that I've attached, Matt Cutts also mentioned that some people use ALL H1 headers and used CSS to make it look like it is not and got a lot of compliants. I believe Google is able to catch that so thats why I'm saying it is strange for top rate SEO consultants are doing that.

Thanks Tommy, Kevin and Mike.
Everything you say is just how I've been taught and sites like SEOmoz and Wordtracker agree with this approach. Just as importantly, user experience and common sense say that proper use of subheadings is the right way to do things.
What I'm not sure about is why some top rate SEO consultants don’t use subheadings at all. Sometimes they've gone to the trouble of making it obvious (using CSS) that some lines are headlines but don't use h2 tags etc.
I was wondering if there were any benefits in doing this.

I don't think that its fewer heading tags making the page rank better, I think that the pages are probably good enough that it doesn't matter there are no subheadings. From my understanding, breaking an article or blog post or page into subheadings and sub-categories by using the various header tags will help with ease of readability. Sometimes people scan the whole page prior to reading (or leaving) and want to see if there's anything to catch their interest. Having a pertinent h2, h3 or h4 could possibly get those people to stop and read a bit when they may otherwise have just left from impatience. I think too many header tags can be a bad thing though. If your page has gotten to the point where you have one h1, four h2s, 10 h3s, 27 h4s, 17 h5s.... then you may be doing it wrong.

Hi Philip,
Having multiple H1 header doesn't affect page rank. It is ok to have multiple H1 header for each section. However, don't over do it. Don't use H1 for the whole page because Google will see that and will take that into consideration in the algorithm. The attached video from Google Webmaster's Youtube page explains that.
Hpoe this helps Phil.

I think good organization (with subheadings) that increases the user experience actually helps rankings as it will encourage inbound links and time-on-site.

How can i get a higher ranking
Hey All, As a rookie on SEO, I optimised this page http://www.nhad.de/fernstudium/sprachkurse/arabisch/sprachkurse-arabisch/arabisch.aspx for the keywords Arabisch lernen. I saw a huge improvement from position 100+ to position 45. but now it's stuck around this position. Are there any things I missed on this page? Are there still things to increase the ranking? I hope to learn from you. thanks in advance!

Page Speed
Google recommends a page load speed of 1.4 seconds, is it recommended to have that page speed for every page on the site, or just the landing pages. Is there a tool that will check the load speed of every page on a site and report the slow pages? The free online tools only check one page at a time.

Ranking Fluctuations
I need your help. My rankings have been on a wild roller coaster ride since I started optimizing the site with standard on page optimization changes. (No keyword stuffing or over-optimization...) I have only made positive changes for the content on the page; I created unique descriptions for every product. I redirected some urls that weren’t readable into a more user- friendly format. I am only doing completely organic link building, really. Yet for some weird reason the rankings initially rose and then steeply fell and ever since have went back up to the top and right back to not in the top 50 results. Just to give you an example this is a graph of one of our main keywords: https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/gd2q This is another keyword that we admittedly never were in the top 5 results but usually we were in the top 20. Check out the wild fluctuations. If it wasn't the main keyword we were going after, I would probably laugh. https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/rcy9 I asked an expert he said he think it might be from a major issue with internal competition. The keywords that seem to fluctuate the most, have numerous landing pages that compete for the same keyword. Since we sell the same object in many many different sizes, thicknesses and colors it only makes sense that we have the same keyword on many pages. I would love someone that is an expert in this area to have a look at the site and give actionable advice so I can stop the craziness. Do you have any suggestions? Do you have anyone that you’d refer for this type of job/consulting?

Too Many On-Page Links
Hi, I did a SEOmoz campaign and got results today, One of the results is Too "Many On-Page Links" when i am drilling down, i see that that's include inside links. for example, i sale food, i have my main department window - inside i have 30 products - each product is linked to a detailed page about the product. so automatically i have 30 links - not including all the others in this page, and i easily get over 100 and even sometimes 200 is this a big issue? does it damages my SEO? If yes, is there a way to write the HTML in a way that internal links like that wont be counted? Thank you SEOWiseUs

My website is saying I have duplicate page content and page title. How do I fix it?
Hi, I created a website on webstarts.com. After I launched it then ran a scan through SEO it says I have duplicate page content and page title. The 2 pages it is reading are technically the same page. www.mobilemowermedicsinc.com and www.mobilemowermedicsinc.com/index . I am unsure how to get rid of on of these as it keeps saying this is an error in the SEO scan. Could someone please advise me of what to do from here. Thanks!
