I have heard many people say "Never pay for a link". I only pay for those directories if it gets me a backlink. My rule is that if it's under 10 bucks, I'll do it. My dentists pay me good money every month and a $10 one time fee isn't going to break the bank especially if it gets you a lifetime backlink.

Good question, something I know a little bit about. In addition to the standard local business sites, there are lots of ways to share health-related content on topically relevant sites.
My wife's dental practice website is my fun little SEO side project. We have had great success building links by writing guest posts and columns for local parenting sites (she's a pediatric dentist). There are a lot of myths and old wives' tales about teeth and people LOVE to hear the truth. Sometimes the myths are true! This type of content marketing has even gotten her appearances on the local TV news as an expert on a recent issue with city water supplies.
We took the top "10 myths about children's teeth" and created a downloadable PDF (visible in the footer) and it is a great confidence builder for parents who are unsure about what to expect. It has attracted a few links from other dental and health-related websites.
Finally, she blogs regularly with a mix of community events (they sponsor a lot of kid-friendly and family events around town) and health-related info for parents and kids.
It's all free and has done wonders for their visibility.

I agree it is labor intensive, but as you mentioned it can pay off.

Agree on business directories. It's also worked wonders for my clients, mostly small and medium-sized businesses. We have a list of about 10 high quality business directories. We supplement with a few others, specific to the industry. We:

never pay for listings or enhancements

take the time and trouble to do it right, hand-crafting answers to all fields -- including photos, logos and special offers (if available)
It's all very labor intensive. And it's not something that can be off-shored or entrusted to the intern. It requires some intelligence to understand the client's business and how best to complete the profile.
This is all rather tedious, but the payoff is big. It's really low hanging fruit more people should pick.

-- chamber of commerce and local service organizations (membership in these can be valuable for business reasons but their website often has a link to their members)
-- local business listings/directories
-- the landlord's website
-- websites of suppliers and service providers (do a testimonial for them, write an article)
-- professional societies for dentists (write an article for them)
-- dental schools attended. some of them link to the practice of successful graduates
-- local charities often link to companies who support them (friends of the library, habitat, religious groups, little league boosters)
-- local business initiatives (tourism association, "buy local", downtown merchant association)
-- local online newspaper (advertise, write an article or column)
-- trade association publications (advertise, write an article or column)
-- local and state license boards sometimes link to the websites of license holders

Hello Moz Community, I am about to hire a SEO firm for my website ranking. I have few questions about their link building plan. http://priceperlink.com/SEO-Link-Building/ Their link building plan ! I have purchased package 4. I have noticed they will use same article and PR again and again . Is that acceptable ? This plan is not authenticated to me. I hope google will catch me for duplicate content. Anyone can clear it please ? Another question is , If i provide unique articles , will that plan be helpful ? Still i have confusion. As I read few days ago, google don't give any value to article submission and press release distribution without any news ! So, help me quickly and suggestion as well. Link building via Rafflecopter
I received an invite from a company to enter a contest for a chance to win a prize. The contest is run by Rafflecopter. Rafflecopter looks interesting because you can place the contest anywhere including social sites and your own website. Contestants can increase the chances of winning in various ways such as an FB like, tweet, etc. The largest number of points (for this particular contest) are awarded for linking from your website to their website. Given that the contestant must add the link to their website and the sponsoring company can not control whether they use nofollow, couldn't this contest approach to link building cause problems for SEO? If the contest included instructions to copy and paste the html with a nofollow, that would seem like a better solution, but the only guidance given was to link to their home page. Your thoughts? I am getting links on people's wordpress blogs but are not showing up on the just discovered tool. Is it true that wordpress links are no-follow links that do give off any link-juice?
A blogger told me that "wordpress.com does not allow blogs to show advertisements or use links to sites that sell merchandise of any kind" is this true? Am i wasting my outreach time trying to get links from wordpress operated blogs?

I could use some help with Link Building Post Panda
I am new to Internet Marketing world and want to become a great SEO. My biggest challenge is How To of Back linking. Not the reason and theory behind back linking. But more the actual hands on Back linking strategy. I feel that a lot of the back linking information out there is so mixed.Rand did a White board Friday lesson on the new link building strategies. When searching for back linking strategies it is filled with all the old link building tactics. What I wanted to ask is all the experienced back link people is, Have you changed your back linking strategy. Or just parts of your strategies. Hey all, Next week we are relaunching our brand spankin' new site. It's a major overhaul of our existing site from both a brand, design, and identity point of view. I think that we as webmasters have to ask ourselves what do we want to achieve with link building. To get quick traffic or build slow authority links, high rankings, lead generation, sales & other things here I may be missing etcccc Other Objective Networking & Relationship Building Alliances : What I discovered today is that building links for 1st page rankings are great and will provide me with steady traffic, but not all of it is targeted traffic, but what else can I do to bring targeted traffic and at the same time try to build alliances with other related non competing business owners online. The idea... is to apply old school networking / relationship building alliances to get targeted traffic to my site that can actually benefit from my services. How Do We Achieve This I become a editor for approving resource links for me site, only the best will be placed on my site as a resource. Build a valuable tightly themed categorized resource section with related non competing resources that can help my sites visitors find what they are looking for, send visitors to non competing resources that may purchase their services which helps me build a relationship with them, and may can with rankings as well, provided I am selective with my qualification process.
