Link building via Rafflecopter
-
I received an invite from a company to enter a contest for a chance to win a prize. The contest is run by Rafflecopter. Rafflecopter looks interesting because you can place the contest anywhere including social sites and your own website. Contestants can increase the chances of winning in various ways such as an FB like, tweet, etc. The largest number of points (for this particular contest) are awarded for linking from your website to their website. Given that the contestant must add the link to their website and the sponsoring company can not control whether they use nofollow, couldn't this contest approach to link building cause problems for SEO? If the contest included instructions to copy and paste the html with a nofollow, that would seem like a better solution, but the only guidance given was to link to their home page.
Your thoughts?
Best,
Christopher -
The viral lift sometimes, it really depends on the company and what the prize is. The company I do it for has a unique product that has a pretty big following. So people organically review it as good and write blog posts about it.
We have never promoted any with money per se. One thing I have found that works really really well is blogging. If there is a blogger in the market that has a lot of followers and they can be paid or given free product to make a blog post about the giveaway (along with a fb post and a tweet). Then that can work out well. We saw one balloon from 500 people entered to 3k people entered in one day because of that.
I don't tend to recommend paid ads, I like the subversive paid blog post, where people do not realize it is "sponsored". I feel people tend to believe it more and have found it works out better.

Thanks, Lesley. I have used Wildfire and SocialAppsHQ in the past. I can see the flexibility of awarding points could prove useful, plus the ability to host on our own web page.
Do you get any viral lift? Do you promote (with $) your contests on FB or other social sites?

Rafflecopter is awesome for this.I have a client that does it regularly. What we do is add an option (one of the make your own entry options) that says something like "If you already own this product post a review for an entry" and other one we do is "Write a blog or forum post about the product for an entry"
I would say doing that we normally get 100 or so positive reviews on various sites and 30 or so blog posts / forum posts. We typically get about 1k people entering total. One thing we have been doing to further target is to post suggested review or forum sites to post on. I think it is borderline spammy, but I feel like it is on the safe side of the line.

Thanks for the quick response. Regarding links, I was more concerned about the potential for harm. Google is smacking companies hard that use link building schemes that do not enhance the user experience, and earning raffle points in exchange for a link seems like a paid link. Perhaps one way to offer points in exchange for a link is to provide a copy/paste URL that includes a nofollow.
Best,
ChristopherPS: Good to know Rafflecopter is working for you. I may give it a try as well.

Rafflecopter is a great service and we use it often when conducting sweepstakes that need to be hosted on websites instead of Facebook apps. Easy to setup and manage the giveaway.
We only use the following refer-a-friend options:
- Like Facebook Page
- Follow on Twitter
- Tweet the Giveaway
- Join our mailing list (business account)
We haven't used Raffelcopter giveaways as a way to link to our sites before. But if the sites that are linking to you are all low quality sites and Google doesn't give them much weight. I can't see it helping your SEO out. Google gives more weight to sites that are related, trustworthy and experts and most sites like that wouldn't join a Rafflecopter sweepstakes. Well I can't imagine New York Times or The Boston Globe doing it...

link building problems
Hello everyone
Link Building | | mkeshavarzmozprodt
I am not sure about the way Moz rank websites but sometimes I think it's a bit confusing. As an example, it kept changing in 3 days by going up and down. In addition, It is not compatible with my Ahrefs ranking. Would you please tell me which one is more correct and accurate in terms of my website authority?
It would be my pleasure if you take look at it first. Thank you in advance.

Value of Links? What is each link worth?
Morning Everyone, I just had this thought and wondered what everyone's opinions were in terms of link value in monetary terms. We'll assume for the purposes of this that the links come from contextually relevant sites and that the sites in question have got the Moz DA from being high quality and have a good quality incoming link profile. Its a bit of a theoretical question, but i guess imagine if the only way you could get links was to pay for them, what would they be worth to you. This is link value for SEO purposes, they will have in addition value from traffic from good sites, that no doubt varies wildly depending on topic. I assume everyone also agrees on: The first link from a domain is the most valuable High DA sites are worth more than low ones. So could anyone who has an opinion on the link value suggest a monetary value for links. Its really just using a monetary amount to see how best to target my time. Here is my example of what might be expected, but I am hoping people with more knowledge will perhaps correct it. DA Rating First Link 2nd-5th Link 5th-10th Link 10Plus Links 5 $5 $2 $1 $0 15 $7 $3 $2 $1 25 $25 $10 $5 $2 35 $45 $20 $7 $3 45 $65 $30 $11 $4 55 $95 $45 $19 $5 65 $200 $100 $45 $6 75 $350 $120 $65 $9 85 $700 $240 $95 $15 95 $1100 $450 $200 $30

Spam Link Building Discovered - What would you do?
Hi Mozers, After investigating our no 1 competitor we have discovered their 87k back links comparing to ours 1k. After dipper investigations we discovered that all the back links are gained by the websites created by themselves. So what they did is - they had purchased 10+ domains and created 10+ new websites that are identical as their original .com version. EVERY SINGLE LINK on these 'new' websites link to their .com version. The 'New' websites are not indexed. Literally each of us can do the same and gain thousands of back links, but isn't it violating google's policy? What are your thought on it? (What is the best practice to report the violation of google's policy to Google?) Best regards, Lana

Link Building for a New Blog
We are setting up a new blog and I was wondering what is the best way to build good quality links for a new website? I have been researching this quite a bit on the forums and a lot of people talk about writing good content which I agree with however no one will find that content if we are not ranking in Google for our keywords. From what I have read the following is what I should be doing Directory's Creating Link-bait (Info-graphics) PR Releases or Getting News Sites to link to us I have heard a lot of mention of using Articles sites like ezinearticles but I have also read that Post Panda that they dont have as much link juice as they once had and also I don't think that for a Blog that we should be using it as well but maybe I am wrong? Would appreciate some peoples suggestions

Link Building in non-competitive industry
Hello, My client's home page is targething 2 keywords - one at 43% difficulty (SEOMoz Keyword Difficulty Tool) and one at 50% difficulty. I want to link build for this person, but I analyzed the top 5 competitors and there is no resource section on any of the sites. We want to write 20 articles for our site. So there's no people linking to content that I can find. This messes up my link building because I always make targeted content on the subject that people are already linking to How do I link build in this case. Nothing stands out as something I could do with my site for link bait. Thanks!

Building Links
Hi everyone, I am new to SEO and in the process of building links the clean way. Any suggestions on how exactly I can find websites that are linking out to quality websites already? I went thru most of my competitors link building strategy - and 90% of their links are done either thru link exchange or paid links. So looking at my competitors strategy does not really help. So I need to find websites/blogs/forums that are ready to link to me if I can show them some useful content. How do I find these websites first? Please help! Cheers! Arjun
