Question on 100% 'not provided' what are people seeing?
-
I've been curious what other SEO professionals have been seeing in their own analytics since the industry news came out that Google has gone to "100% not provided." I've definitely seen a steady rise in 'not provided' data across the board since about July but no sudden spikes and still not 100%.
Looking at one specific website this morning for the month of October to date in GA, and segmenting out organic traffic from just Google, I'm seeing about 85% not provided. Looking at just today (Monday) it is 88%. So over time it is definitely trending up, and I expect it will be greater than 90% by the end of October. Just curious if that is consistent with what others are seeing? Has anyone truly gotten to 100% of Google Organic traffic at 100%?

Thanks for looking into this IrvCo,
I am using clicky.com

Actually I see a very similar breakdown of Google as a referrer and direct traffic for safari as a segment in my Google Analytics as I see for my total traffic so I do believe GA is reporting the referrer correctly for Safari. I have no idea if Safari specifically has more of an issue with "not provided" but I do know that Chrome has been particularly bad all year since it started treating any search made in the address bar as a secure search by default. Maybe Safari does too, I don't know. But the traffic is at least attributed back to Google organic as a referrer, not direct, in my analytics.
Just curious what analytics solution you use? I've been a long time Omniture user and just recently started using GA (not by choice). I was definitely seeing issues with the way Adobe was classifying and under reporting not provided searches from Chrome due to this issue!

Thank you, Daniel.
I just checked and mine looks like IOS too. Glad you figured it out.

I got a site with 98% (not provided)... Overall among 28 sites that I checked I got a 87% avg.... But the trend line it's exponential on the las 10 weeks.
EGOL I've checked what you said about Safari traffic, I'm using GA and got as well a lot of direct traffic, however 95% was from IOS devices.... maybe the issue it's related to only mobile devices?

Most of my traffic from Google is now [not provided].
Another problem is that lots of Safari browser versions are passing very little information. No query terms and no referrer - so they look like direct traffic. In my opinion, about 1/2 of my Safari traffic is without query terms and referrers. (Go look at your analytics for safari and you will see same thing I think.... * I don't use Google Analytics so you might see something slightly different *)
I am also suspicious that some Google traffic is appearing as direct.

I haven't seen 100 yet, but I too have seen a rise since July.

EMD question. How far can you push it?
A site targeting "orange juice" and "apple juice" as keywords is the example I'm going to use. Would you have any EMD related benefit if the domain was appleorangejuice.com for either of those keywords or both? To elaborate, this is NOT a question about how users would respond to such a domain. I think we can all agree that having the domain orangejuice.com would make ranking for that term easier and the same with applejuice.com. Is there any benefit then in using appleorangejuice.com with regards to optimizing for Both keywords or only 1? and which do you think would get the bigger benefit; apple juice or orange juice since the latter appears in sequence? I also feel the need to mention that this question arose from the fact that one of our clients insists that having the keyword in his domain will make his life a lot easier but the EMD for that phrase is not available so we're looking for different domains that are not mind numbingly obvious in their attempt to get ranked quickly.

Help settle an argument pls - are local results 'organic'?
Hi y'all. Hoping you can help give some definition here to organic results as I've inadvertantly started an argument in a forum when I was suggesting to some soul in need of advice that he needed to concentrate on the two types of SEO, those being Organic AND Local search results. So the argument started that Local search IS Organic, and results are classed as either Organic or Paid. Though to me, the term 'organic results' represents the search results derived from googles main website indexing algorithm, Not Paid, and not any of the Verticals (Local/News/Images/Video etc.) So would love to hear what others views are... if I'm totally wrong I'll go back and graciously accept my education 🙂

Question on Google's Differentiation
Hi everyone, We have a short question that probably has a very long answer: What are all the ways that Google differentiates one search result from another? This is really important for us to know and, up until now, we can't find a really good and complete source that explains this. Thank you in advance.

How do you value a site that generates no income before it's sold?
Hi, I'm currently creating a number of sites which target the wedding market. Each site is localized and specific to a niche within the wedding market. The intention is to create the site, rank it in the top position of Google and then sell it to a local business within that niche and area. The problem that i am having is that I don't know how to place a value on each site. I have factors taken from Google (using Market Samurai) so I know the broad and phrase match traffic details as well as the Google PPC average prices. My initial thought was to use the Google PPC price and multiply that by the number of organic visitors the site would receive if it was ranked #1 on Google. I appreciate that the PPC figures may be higher than what an advertiser would actually pay per click so I conservatively halved the Google PPC figure given in Market Samurai. Is this a good way of valuing the site or do I need to look at the value per customer to the business that I am trying to sell the site to and work from a conversion factor based on the number of visitors that the site would receive. If the site received 500 visitors per month and 5% of those became customers multiplied by the average profit per customer - that would give a monthly value of the website. I am very unsure as to what the best approach is here and look forward to hearing any advice and ideas from fellow members. Thanks, Michael

Wrong types of questions...
I've noticed something in the forums. Many people are asking the wrong types of questions with regards to SEO and having success with their sites on it. This is understandable since many of the questions being asked are by those who have only just got in to SEO. But it does show that the emphasis of the industry must still be very much focused on getting links and changing META data, etc... with little mention out there in all those resources of what actually matters. Thankfully, the questions are answered with people explaining that the wrong questions are being asked, and that it's not just about random traffic gained through rankings for general keywords. Do you think that in time we'll see an evolution of the questions, as awareness grows, moving from questions of how to rank to questions on how work out the best KPIs to measure, and how to action strategies for improving them?

I'm looking for solid internet usage / traffic data.
Hi there, In a week or two I'll give my first internet marketing presentation to a local business club. Ill walk them through the basics of what is happening online, and how both B2B and B2C business can use their online assets as marketing tools. I want some basic statistical data to back up my story, like: Current web usage distribution (social/search/media etc) Growth of Mobile vs Desktop Search Engines distribution (google bing yahoo msn) Online retail numbers To top it all off, I would also like to be able to show both worldwide and The Netherlands data. What is my best bet for some serious datamining ;)? Thanks in advance for helping me out!
