Triggering Maps
-
This morning, I did a non-personalized search for a keyword phrase with "attorney" in the phrase. No maps were triggered, and we had a good ranking. But, when I substituted "attorney" for "lawyer," a bunch of local map listings popped up and pushed us to the second page. Any idea what attorney wouldn't have any maps, but lawyer would?
Thanks,
Ruben

The local pack returned like you though it would.

Hi Ruben,
My pleasure, and I'll be interested in your follow-up, for sure!

Hi Miriam,
I absolutely will followup. I'll mark it in my calendar. Thank you so much for such a thorough response! That was incredibly informative; I really appreciate it.
Thanks again,

Hi Ruben,
I run into things like this from time to time, in which I'm expecting to see local results, but at the time of search, Google doesn't show any. Google is always testing things and it appears to me that, sometimes, keywords that are typically local fail to trigger local results. It's likely you'll see the local pack return at some point for this search, but as to when this will happen, I can't say.
Sometimes, when there is a low volume of search for a specific keyword, Google will not show a local pack of results, of course, but 'attorney' isn't typically going to fall into this category. Unless you're in some geographic location where no one is searching for an attorney (unlikely!) then this is probably not the case. There is also a situation going on right now in which Google is showing a one box instead of 3-7 results for broad search terms, and this appears to be tied into the hummingbird update. In such a case, you'd be getting one local attorney results instead of 3-7 of them. But, it sounds like you're not seeing any local results at all.
There might also be a case in which a category of industry has been so spammed that Google decides not to show local results for it. When Google stopped showing web design and SEO firms in the local results, some people speculated that this was due to heavy spamming of that category, but it's my opinion that Google simply considers those types of businesses to be largely virtual.
In general, though, I would recommend that you keep checking on the keyword over the next few weeks to see if the local pack returns. If not, it might be worthwhile to report what you're seeing to the Google and Your Business Forum (http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/business), titling your post something like 'Local Pack No Longer Triggered By Attorney Searches In My City'. It's likely that you will receive responses to the tune of there being dramatic shifts in Google's display all the time in local and that Google personalizes the results for each user, but if the issue continues for some weeks and you report it, you might get some interesting replies.
I don't see any mass reporting of the issue you're describing right now, and 'attorney' is still triggering local results in my town, so this is likely a hang-tight kind of thing that may change tomorrow or two weeks from now. I'd be interested if you'd follow up on this thread in a few weeks to see if you're still seeing the same thing.

Ranking well for keywords, but not in Google maps
If the search "criminal defense attorney" or any number of variants, is performed from a mobile device, like an iPhone, Google maps seems to be inserting many local map listings ahead of the normal search results in the Tallahassee, Florida area. These are great - as they have the Call button and the Directions button. However, for some reason, my clients aren't ranking well here and competitors who are seemingly doing nothing are higher in the list. I have created the Google+ page for attorney and business page for the firm and completed the profile, uploading pictures etc and verified the address. I have the local address (schema-proper, I believe) on the linking home page and their address is actually closer to downtown/midtown than others. I've even gotten some positive reviews and +1s, at least enough to be competitive in this field. This was about 2 months ago. Any advice? On a (perhaps) related note, the competition has category descriptions outside of the Google-allowed categories. I can't save settings without fitting neatly into their "Criminal Justice Attorney" category. Help here would also be appreciated.

Business with Google + Business Page not showing with map
Hi I set up a Google + business Page for a client and we claimed their address (it shows in the Google Maps page fine. The page has been created for a while now but when you search for this business it does not show the map to the right? Any thoughts? BTW we have two locations and both have separate pages - thought this could be the issue but then when I added the business name + the location still not showing.

Google Places / Map Results CTR vs Top Organic Result
I have a client who is currently ranking close to the top of the Google Places results for a handful of important local keywords. They have a competitor who is pretty consistantly ranking in number #1 and #2 organic positions, above the Places results. Does anyone know the average click through rates for results similar to these? Do the #1 and #2 organic positions still outperform the lower placed Google Places (with side map) results when the search intent is very local? I just wonder if they are possibly in a better position as-is if people are more likely to use the map or places listings on the SERPs page, rather than click through to another site. Thanks 🙂

Google Maps Reviews Disappearing - So Where is the best place to host them now?
I think a lot of people are having this problem. You spend years receiving great reviews on Google Places only to have the wiped out for no reason. That being the case what 3rd party sites do you all suggest that client reviews be hosted besides your website? Thoughts?

Local query doesnt trigger local maps listings?
Hi guys, Ive been doing local seo for quite some time and had great results from both organic listings and local maps listings (and a merged listings). However ive noticed time and time again that local maps listings dont appear in serps on all local searches, even the most popular local search terms. Take the phrase "marketing company glasgow" local phrase, local intent but no maps results. But if you click on maps on the laft hand side, theres clearly tons of mpas results. Any ideas why google dont display local businesses on certain local intent phrases? Is there any way around this? Even with good on page seo, and good rankings organically, it would be great to get the maps listing on page 1 too. Thanks Robert

Google Places & Maps
Hi I'm preparing a confernce in France to explain Google Places & Maps to an audience interested in promoting local businesses but mainly hotels and other tourism related. As you know, searches such as Hotel + City are giving a lot of visibility to Google Places results. Being in the top results is as important if not more important than organic ranking. I'm going to be looking into the new presentation of Google Places results in the SERPs and maybe underlining a difference in results between Places and Maps which I've just recently spotted. Can anyone recommend some good ressources online to explain the changes that came about with Google Places and ranking factors I should be talking about ? If you have a pet theory on what triggers the different presentation of Places results in the main SERPS or what factors make one local business rank better than another in Google Places then please discuss below too 😉 Ah ! Almost forgot, any feedback on Google Boost use also interesting for us ; although it isn't in France yet Thanks Neil
