What is the best way to research long tail search queries?
-
Hi,
I am wondering if there is any special way to seek out long tail search queries?
For example, when I search in Adwords or Ubersuggest for a particular group of keywords, I only ever seem to get 1 to 3 keywords.
I am looking for the longer search terms like actual questions i.e. "Where is the best yoga studio in Doncaster?"
Currently I rely on not hitting in Google in enter but I figure that there must be a better way?
Thanks guys!

Trung beat me to it but +1 to keywordtool.io, an often overlooked thing is to ask your users how they would find a solution to their issue - with a tool like seed keywords - http://seedkeywords.com/.
We have recently had success with looking at the old pre-not provided data for long tail queries, the data is fresh enough that it might open your eyes a bit to new opps and a lot of people aren't doing that. One of our peeps Amanda might be publishing something soon about this, it helped us build / refresh content better than if we had used other tools.

There are some great suggestions here. I would use all of them. One nifty tool not mentioned is http://www.found.co.uk/ppc-keyword-tool/ It concatenates lists of keywords. After getting all the possibilities there, go to Ubersuggest and plug them all in. If you want to do a whole bunch at one time without being bothered by turing numbers, try using ScrapeBox. Cheers!

I recommend checking out http://keywordtool.io/, very slick tool. Soovle is another cool tool to get long tail keyword ideas from multiple search engines (e.g. Amazon, YouTube, Wikipedia, etc.)
But the tools are only the first step to finding long tail queries. You'll have to dig in and look at related searches and use the data to inform what keywords are the right inputs for the tools based on the type of long tail queries you're looking for. In this case, questions that people are asking on search engines.
A great way to get some initial data is to enter the head term into Google Keyword Planner and export the Ad Groups that Google recommends. Then put it into a word cloud tool like Tag Crowd and exclude the head term from being included in the tag cloud. This will produce a word cloud that will give you some quick insights into how people are searching around the head term.
Happy keyword researching!

Even though Google Analytics returns (not provided) for most search terms, don't rule it out totally. Even if 87% of the results are (not provided) that still leaves you with 13%, which can be quite a lot, depending on your site's traffic. And Google Webmaster Tools still lets you see the keywords people used to find your site, so you can look there.
If you are running an Adwords campaign, under keyword details you can see which keywords were used to bring up your ad; quite often there are a lot of long-tail terms there. Or if you have site search enabled on your site, you can look at what people look for once they are on your site (useful information for a number of reasons).
When you do a regular Google search, after the results there is a list of related searches which can be useful; you can also do a search with some of the related searches to build out the list that way as well.

There are many ways. I typically start at Spy Fu and export an inventory of keywords. I Identify relevant ones and eliminate the rest. Now I have a base list, and begin building permutations/synonyms that are relevant. For example, the query "Where is the best yoga studio in Doncaster" I would identify:
- Best
- Yoga
- Studio
- Doncaster
as objects and run it through a permutation generator. For synonyms, I would run it again. For example, I would eliminate best for favorite and keep on adding the results into kw inventory.

Hi, my first time in the community. my web site is pretty new and I'm focusing now on the Onsite SEO. I am using an outsourcing company that writing me content, and I want to start my blog and publish it. but, I didn't finish yet my Keyword research, is it useless from google perspective to publish it without any keywords? it can hurt my site if ill publish it without any keywords inside of the article? or it still can be good for my site ranking/power? thanks !!!

Is there ever a time when we shouldn't care about content showing in search?
I often get push back from our content team about optimizing blogs for organic search. They'll say things like "but this isn't relevant for search" or "well, this is intended for people who come directly to our blog, I don't think it'll matter if it shows up in search." This is especially true when we publish product announcements and customer case studies. As an SEO, my opinion is definitely biased, but I 100% disagree and believe that search is relevant for every piece of content -- it's just that we might approach SEO differently for a product announcement (i.e. looking at branded search queries) vs. a more general "how to create an editorial calendar" type post. Would like to hear thoughts from the Moz community, though: what do you think? Is there ever a time when search isn't relevant for a blog post? Ever a time when we should skip the keyword/phrase research and tracking? Why or why not?

Live Search tool for text on websites
Hi everyone, Does anyone know of an online scanner / search tool that will do a live check for the occurance or a word or phrase on a website? I know you can use Google's site:domainname.com <word phrase="">but that is only checking what Google has in its current index for that site. I am looking for a tool that will do a live scan and search (i.e. as at the time) and then return a list of occurances it has found for the word or phrase.</word> Thanks in advance for this. Peter

Keyword Research Local vs Organic
I am curious what tact people take when doing KWR for a local business where regional keywords are important, for example 'Dallas Family Dentist' vs just 'Family Dentist'? It can be challenging to consistently create content for these regional keywords without looking spammy or akward in the wording of titles and copy. Any advice on how you approach SEO research or content creation when these regional words are important?

How do I do SEO for a client who is starting a website that is in a niche with very little to none search traffic?
I am helping a client do On-page optimization and link building. His website is rather like thoughtcatalog.com, where it is a collection of random articles, opinions and anecdotes with no fixed genre. He also has a section devoted to artsy pictures of women. To make things worse, I am in a country (singapore) where the population is small, and the search traffic for his kind of content is minuscule. I have trouble finding out good keywords for him to target and I am considering not undergoing any serious keyword targeting at all (because it will detract from the style of his content). I did a little competitor research, and most of the websites in such a genre do not seem to do any keyword targeting at all! In such a case, how do i continue to help him with SEO? should I abandon keyword research? What should i do to help him earn traffic?

Key word query
I work for a company that sells vitamins and sports supplements. I'm just looking at the key words in google analytics that people are searching to land on our page and they don’t appear to be using any product names /ailments etc. So with that in mind how does this affect my key word strategy when it comes to adding words to the pages? I had it in mind I would be adding brand names and product types etc? Any feedback would once again be much appreciated Cheers,

How trustworthy is Google's Keyword Tool for organic search research?
Can anyone (not Google affliated) explain to me where Google's data really comes from in their Keyword Tool? Is it at all based on organic search? Or only on Google Ads related data? I know there was some controversy back in June '10 and the Google remedied the return of suggested keywords but I can't seem to get a clear answer (other than from the Google blog itself) whether the search volumes returned are truly indicative of organic search. Am I relying on the wrong tool? Do those more savvy than I only rely on the keyword tool for PPC research. Please help! I'm obsessing over my numbers here. 🙂
