Keyword Targeting / Cannibalisation
-
Hi Guys
We're about to launch a very large website for a flooring company and would like to find out more about _key word _cannibalisation - to put my mind at rest. I know Rand posted a Whiteboard Friday early last year about this topic and mentioned using part of the same keyword was ok to use.
All our keywords are specifically geared for "user intent" meaning each keyword has relevance and the content to back up the keyword. We've ensured the keywords are located within each url, placed at the start of the page title, h1 etc.

Hi Steve
Having unique content for each product page is a must! I guess sofa beds are individually unique to a degree in terms of brand, size, functionality, design etc.
If you could elaborate about what it is exactly you are trying to do, I'll try to help?

Hi there
I am an Ecommerce manager and I find the whole keyword cannibalisation topic fascinating.
We sell furniture - beds, sofa beds, dining tables, chairs etc.
I am trying to add value to each product description - as much important and factual information as possible - as opposed to superlatives etc
We have about 12 sofa beds and I am working at each sofa bed targeting specific keywords so that they don't compete for the same keywords.
In regards to the keyword "sofa beds", I am working at this keyword being more dominant within the category page.
In the modern SEO context, I would love to know if this is the right approach?

Hi Gary, Samuel has raised some good questions. Did you see his response? Let us know, thanks!

Gary, thanks for the question. Based on the little that I've seen here, I would worry more about a Panda penalty than keyword cannibalization.
Here's the history in a basic nutshell. Years ago, webmasters would aim to have one page target one keyword. There would be one page for "red t-shirts," one for "green t-shirts," and so on. All of the text on those pages would be exactly the same -- except that "red or "green" may change based on the page. In such a context, webmasters did not want to have keyword cannibalization -- if the word "green" was used on the page for "red t-shirts," then Google might not know which page to rank for each desired term.
However, this created bloated websites with many more pages than were actually needed. Does a t-shirt website really need 50 pages (one for each color) when only one would be enough (and then the visitor could choose which color to buy)? In Google's eyes, such websites created bad user experiences -- and Google wants to eliminate bad user experiences.
So, in case you don't know, Google's Panda penalty targets websites that -- among other issues -- have a lot of "thin" or "duplicated" content such as in the t-shirt example above. (You can see more information in this Moz post by Cyrus.)
Before going further, I would have to ask you some questions: Does you website really need a separate page for each and every single one of those topics? Are the products really that entirely different? Are the text and images on each page completely different and unique -- in other words, does each page offer true value to the visitor, or are you just trying to rank highly in Google straight away as in the t-shirt example?
If many of those pages above are on similar topics, then you may want to have one page per topic (rather than per keyword) where by each topic consists of a group of related keyword phrases -- see this Whiteboard Friday on modern, semantic SEO for more information.
Please let me know your thoughts, and I'd be happy to respond further!

Please... Help me convince my boss that Keyword Density is not-important / damaging.
If you can, please provide any and all talking points that I can use in this argument. It seems that no matter what I show him, including Matt Cutts' video debunking Keyword Density back in 2011, it doesn't seem to stick. He is fully, 100% convinced that keyword density is hugely important and we need to focus our time and energy on it. Any sources you might have to help me show him that this is a myth would be hugely appreciated. Thank you.

H1 tags and keywords for subpages, is it best practice to reuse the keywords?
So let's say I have a parent page for shoes, and I have subpages for dress shoes, work shoes, play shoes, then inside each of those pages I have dress shoe cleaning, dress shoe repair, same for work and play shoes. Would it be ok to use h1 tags like this: Shoes > Dress Shoes > Dress Shoe Cleaning Dress Shoe Repair Work Shoes > Work Shoe Cleaning Work Shoe Repair Play Shoes > Play Shoe Cleaning Play Shoe Repair Would these be considered duplicate h1 tags since cleaning and repair are used for each subpage? In certain niche companies, it's rather difficult to use synonyms for keywords. Or is it ok to just keep things simple and use Shoes > Dress Shoes > Cleaning and so on? Especially since we have urls and breadcrumbs that are structured nicely using keywords, for this example both breadcrumbs and urls read like sitename.com/shoes/dress-shoes/cleaning. Any advice?

Avoid Keyword Stuffing in Document
Hi All, On my on-page-grade-report its suggested not to use keyword more than 15 times. Its a eCommerce site and we have brands and we have ranges within the brand. Now the problem i am facing is before each range the brand name is mentioned For eg. Levis is the brand and 501 is the range - the brand page is being optimized for keyword "Levis". All ranges for Levis is listed on same page as Levis 501, Levis 503, Levis 506 and so on... As the ranges are above 15 in number my main keyword "Levis" is being used well over 15 times. I would appreciate if you guys can suggest if its very necessary to remove repetitive keyword before each range i.e call it Just 501, 503, 506. Or can i leave it as it is. Let me know your views, Sohail

Meta Keywords: Do They Hurt Rankings
I know that Google doesn't use meta keywords, but does it hurt to have anything in there? Just wondering if I need to remove all the meta keywords that are on my site, or are they harmless to have. Also, would meta keywords ever be used by an internal search plug-in if we were to install one in the future, or do they generally look at the product title and description for that info?

Cannot Increase Ranking For a Keyword Phrase
I've been working on the keyword phrase, "Niceville Assisted Living" for the website: http://nicevilleassistedliving.com and my increase in rankings has pretty much stalled. When I first started working on this website, a lot of the content was duplicated (which we took care of by plugging in unique content), there were locations listed on the homepage that were throwing my rankings off, I've created blog posts each week (we've even tried posting one post every day for a week), added the Facebook feed to the homepage, corrected errors in the theme, and I'm trying to get a resources page built. I know content is a very, very large part of SEO.. but it seems like the content I am plugging in isn't helping. There aren't any errors in Webmaster Tools and my keyword density is fairly close to the website ranking #1. I think my biggest problem is backlinks. Other websites have quite a few whereas the website I'm working on doesn't have any (I'm working on that, but the number I have doesn't compare to the websites ranking in the top three). I'm stumped as to what to do next. Does anyone have suggestions to improve the ranking for this keyword phrase?

Canonical / 301 Redundancy
Suppose I have two dynamic URLs that lead to the identical page: www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1 and www.example.com/product.php?y=1 The x=1 parameter had some historical meaning, but is now unused. All references to the x=1 parameter have been removed from internal links and sitemaps. I have implemented two solutions: First, the header of www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1 includes: Second, the .htaccess file includes the following: Redirect permanent /product.php?x=1&y=1 http://www.example.com/product.php?y=1 Questions: 1. I assume that since canonical is still relatively new, it's best to play it safe and implement both solutions. Is this correct? 2. When I point my browser to www.example.com/product.php?x=1&y=1, it does NOT redirect to www.example.com/product.php?y=1. The address bar continues to show the non-canonical URL. Is this because the canonical tag somehow takes precedence over the 301 redirect? 3. How long will Google Webmaster Tools continue to show these as duplicates, even though I've implemeted BOTH canonical and 301? It's been a few weeks and I thought it would have rolled off by now. Thanks!
