Site migration 301's list on Apache server - when do I take the old migrated URLs off our 301 list?
-
Howdy!
The site was migrated last year to a new platform, therefore the URLs were migrated over using 301 redirect rules.
Since then, the server has a huuuuge list of rules for URLs and I wanted to know when can we start taking these off of the list? And, how can I test to see if they are still indexing, do I simply just add the url to the google search bar?
Thanks Guys!
Kay

I would never remove them. If you are afraid your file is too large then have your developer test how long it's taking to process the file. If this number is unacceptable, consider moving the redirects to the server config file so that they are only loaded during the server startup and not each time a page is processed.

Hi there
While I am definitely interested to see how the community answers the removal of rules on the redirect file, I wanted to offer a couple of ideas.
I would pull a list of old URL backlinks from:
Search Console
Majestic
Ahrefs OSEI would see if you have any links pointing to old URLs that could be updated to the new URLs, that way you don't lose those links from your actions on the redirect file. There may be links you'd want to remove or disavow as well.
And yes, you could search to see if these URLs are still being indexed by searching them. You could look into the Removal-Tool from Google, but I would use that with caution.
I will back out now for the answer to removing rules from your file, since I am really not sure there.
Hope this helps a bit! Good luck!

How to make google crawl our repository to make our site rank but make sure users dont go to our repository ?
We have a website that has links to documents related to various sectors. But the challenge is we do not have the documents on the website itself and they are linked to our document repository that has been blocked to google. We have put nofollow and noindex to the repository. Since Google can not read those documents, it has resulted in an impact in our SEO ranking. What would be the best way to make Google crawl the PDF documents in the repository at the same time make it invisible the "repo" not appear in the search engines. Would dofollow and noindex sequence work ?

Can you have same product name and description on a local and national site at the same time without getting dinged by google?
My question is regarding a few sites we own which are all related. The local site (http://location.company.com) is a extension of the national main site (http://company.com.) We are in the process of launching these new sites as replacements to older sites we created years ago. My first question regarding SEO is it important to the search engines to have unique product content on both sites even though they promote the same products (with same pictures) and brands or can we keep the same product names and descriptions as I hope? I ask this because essentially they are the same site but with with the exception of the local extension..... We thought by re writing all the content on the main pages of both sites along with different; title tags, page title and meta descriptions that that would make the sites different enough to get away with this. Is that the case? Thank you in advance for your assistance, Jake

How to ask Google to remove old pages that don't exist
I have moved a site to a new location. There are a number of pages that date back to 2012 and 2011 and we do not want them anymore. Is there a way to ask Google to remove these pages entirely.

Site for my clients to log in and see their traffic, etc.
I have done a ton of research and I am struggling to find an easy to use, easy to understand site / tool that will allow my clients to log in and see basic information about their website traffic, rankings, referring sites, etc. in an ATTRACTIVE, EASY TO UNDERSTAND layout. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Seomoz (my true favorite) Raven, webceo, and so many others are powerful tools - I don't need that, just looking for an attractive place to log in and view their stats, that's it. Thank you - have a great rest of the week! Matthew

Multilingual site (rel="alternate" hreflang="x")
Hi there, We have a multilingual site with same content translated into different languages. Some are also in different countries with same language. The issue with our site is that international Google SERP shows our US site before their own country/language site. In order to resolve this issue, we implemented the following rel="alternate" hreflang="x" across all locales: After testing these out, our US site still shows up on search results in other countries (checked after 2 months). Are we missing something here? Our guess is that it's not working because we are missing canonical tags or meta language code (). Thanks in advance.
