What to do with mismatched blog content?
-
I've maintained a blog on my website https://www.reich-consulting.net/ for quite a few years for my side business, which recently became my full-time gig. Since 2003 I worked as at IT Specialist at a technical school and I blogged about everything from tech support and IT issues to web design and development.
Now I'm a full-time web developer. I get a lots of traffic from some of these blog posts, but it doesn't seem to be useful traffic. For example someone whose searching for a solution to a super-specific windows error (one of my most popular posts) isn't going to be interested in hiring me for web development. Furthermore I have a concern that these pages might be doing a disservice to the primary message of the website, which is small business website design and web marketing. When I look at my top search terms in Google Search Console, these random terms from old blog entries are the top 30 terms... website design-related content doesn't even rate.
Any thoughts? Should I keep that content? Remove and 301 redirect it? Figure out a creative way to use it to my advantage?

There are 2 schools of thought here:
The pure old school SEO approach is to leave all of that content on the site so long as it meets some basic content quality requirements like length, non-duplication, etc. If those posts have a good number of inbound links (more than 5-10% of your link profile), then there's an even stronger argument to leave them there, and just publish some new content so that they go deeper into your archives.
I think that's a perfectly legitimate approach in this case, unless you're getting tons of annoying contact form submissions from people wanting help with problems you don't want to be involved with. That would be a good argument for removing these posts.
The second angle is the editorial content purist approach. This approach would say "traffic and links be damned, if it doesn't convey the intended message to your target audience, kill it." If your content was really off topic - like a gardening tutorial, I would recommend this route.
However - your content is related to IT and programming from what I can see - eg a post about Accessing Networking Settings in Windows XP. In my opinion, that type of content is still compelling to a small business owner who might hire you, because it's further proof that you're technically savvy. From that standpoint, I think you could make a good argument for leaving that content in place.
The final point is whether Google thinks your site is about SEO/web design, or about IT support. This is a legitimate concern. I would address it by simply adding a lot of new blog posts over the course of the year, entirely dedicated to web design and marketing. It's possible to "retrain" Google's understanding of what your site is about by doing this consistently enough. Here's a great post that I think would be a good tactic for you to pursue while retraining Google to understand your site's new purpose: http://www.anumhussain.com/presentations/topics-over-keywords.

In general, I think it's never a good idea to outright remove or delete a blog post - especially one that may actually be helpful to proper visitors. In this case, I'd suggest setting blog posts that disrupt your site's flow/funnel or otherwise cause this sort of issue to "no-index". Deindexing posts / pages like this will remove them from SERPs, but will leave them accessible to visitors. Don't be too heavy-handed with de-indexing though. Do this to one or a few posts, and see how that effects your site after a month. Then, if it's had a benefit, you could de-index more (not all) posts like this.

Is 11k-30k search traffic too high for a small blog with low domain authority to compete for? Is competition all that matters?
Trying to decide on a keyword phrase for my next post. One of the two phrases I'm deciding between has 100x more traffic but the priority is wayyy higher and the competition is just one point higher (54 vs 53). I'm hesitant to write on a post that gets 11k-30k monthly volume however b/c it just seems like too much traffic for a small blog with a domain authority of only 18 to compete with. But if the competition is nearly the same and the priority is higher, should I go for it anyway? I generally go for things with lower traffic thinking I will be able to better compete. Thanks!

Ecommerce: How to do best product content piece - include competitors?
Hello, A client runs an Ecommerce store. Doing a "best running shoes" type piece of content in our industry. I (the SEO) want to be 10X better than the first listing and be honest and fit intent by including all "running shoes" from all internet suppliers (including nofollow links). It's about 8-10 names. We could list us first when we carry a product. like 6 other site's products 4 of ours, listing who carries the product with our site listed first if we do. We have some of the best. The meta description and top of the article would be like. We analyzed 23+ sites and made some hard conclusions.... But wait, one of the owners doesn't want to list competitor site names even if they are nofollow or even just text. She only wants to include items from our store. I would have to rename the content "Our Top 5 products" and it would be a mismatch in intent and keywords for "best running shoes" and just be for our customers. What is the most proper SEO thing to do to attack "best running shoes" (if appropriate)keeping in mind long terms sales? The owner wants to hear your suggestions as well. And is a "best" keyword sometimes competition? Thanks.

Does anyone know of a good keyword identification tool to be used on a particular piece of content?
I'm hoping for a tool that would extract keyword possibilities from an article, run them through a keyword popularity tool such as Google AdWords Keyword Planner and present ranked results (including number of monthly searches) to the writer. That would enable the writer to choose relevant popular keywords (especially phrases) in the web headline, page title and text. Does anyone know of such a tool? I'm considering having one built in-house if nothing already exists. How it might work Ideally, this might be a browser add-on. The user would highlight the story or blog text, and click on the browser add-on button to start the tool. Using something like viewer.opencalais, the text would plug into a keyword extraction tool and automatically run the results. In the next step the extracted terms would automatically plug into the Google AdWords Keyword Planner and run the results for “Keyword Ideas.” I think this can be done via the AdWords API: https://developers.google.com/adwords/api/docs/reference/v201402/TrafficEstimatorService?hl=fr The user would then be presented with a series of ranked keyword possibilities based on relevance and popularity. Why it’s useful This would make it far more efficient for busy journalists (or anyone) to write effective web headlines.

Can using an exact sentence from your content as meta description hurt?
Hi Mozzers! I'm uploading some press releases and the first sentence makes a perfect meta description. Would using the exact same wording ever hurt my rankings? Thanks!

Help with understanding how to target keywords not in content ?
I have a customer suggesting the use of keywords related to his competitors but not in the content of his site or how he promotes his brand. The page content is product specific and I use keyword matches for page and site strength. 1.) Does it hurt or help to load up the keywords with misc. keywords (example- the site is for a premium product use the terms "cheap", "affordable") 2.) Any suggestion for almost blank/generic landing pages ? 3.) Any benefit or penalty for using fewer keywords on multiple pages ? (example - target 6-8 words on 30 pages) I need a few discussion points for my next meeting and to clarify my position.

Hit by Panda, what's the quickest way to remove content
One of our client's sites got hit by panda/penguin. after careful investigation we found that the site had 6,900 pages indexed out of which about 300 are actual pages (pages with quality content and add value to the user). Needless to say we had to remove all those pages. Most of the thin pages were on the blog section of the site so we removed the WP which was on www.mysite.com/blog/. My question is how can i speed up the process for Google to realize that i have taken all those this pages down. i have fetched the homepage and all linked pages via "Fetch as Google Bot" on WMT. is there anything else i can do to speed this up???

Keyword cannibalization - blog posts vs. site content
As an example, I am trying to rank for the term "ice cream". I have site content pages that relate to "chocolate ice cream", "vanilla ice cream", etc. These content pages have been SEO optimized using best practices. Would I be ruining my SEO work if I begin to publish blog posts for the same keywords that my content pages target? Am I basically forced to find alternative keywords and only target one page per keyword?
