MozPoints end of year 2015, top 50 aggregated
-
On December 30th, 2015 I decided to look at the Moz Community Rankings, I find it fun to do for time to time, and I always like to see how close I am to getting that special dinner with Rand I have heard so much about in the past.
One thing I noticed right away is that Moz ranks members just on MozPoints, and not on other factors like, how helpful they tend to be. This means had I joined in a few years earlier, I could be at the top.. or could I be???
Again, it is just something I did for fun, but I decided to look at a few additional factors to get my True MozRank
By examining just the top 50 active members I added some additional ranking factors and aggregated them to find a true Rank. The ranking factors are..
- Moz Points Per Month (Using the users points divided by months they have been a member)
- Thumbs Up percentage (Using the percentage of Thumbs Up they receive per point)
- Good Answer percentage (Using the percentage of Good Answers they receive per point)
- Endorsed Answer percentage (Using the percentage of Endorsed Answers they receive per point)
After that I gave each of the top 50 a rank in each category based on their respective scores. I then totaled the ranks, and assigned a new final rank based on the lowest totals (which means they ranked the best).
Edit (01/18/2016): With the help of Peter Nikolow I aggregated all active users as per this post.
Link to all 4291 active users ranksFor example EGOL category ranks:
- MozPoint Rank (1)
- Points Per Month Rank (2)
- Percent of Thumbs Up Rank (27)
- Percent of Good Answers Rank (29)
- Percent of Endorsed Answers Rank (23)
Total = 82
Final Rank = 5His closest competitor RyanKent MozPoint Points rank 2
- MozPoint Rank (2)
- Points Per Month Rank (3)
- Percent of Thumbs Up Rank (39)
- Percent of Good Answers Rank (9)
- Percent of Endorsed Answers Rank (20)
Total = 73
Final Rank = 2Well it was a fun experiment for me, a couple people are out of place in the rankings based on other factors but for the most part MozPoints are pretty accurate.
You can view the spread sheet on Google Docs and play around with the data as you wish.
Don
EDIT: After looking at the document again I noticed an error with rank assignments I have since fixed it.

I noticed MozPoint rank was pretty close to the aggregated rank for everybody in the Top 50 list. But when you look at all 4291 users there is some big differences. I think maybe in June I'll do just a top 1000 or have a minimum point requirement.
-
My MOZ Rank = 10th... Adjusted Rank = 10th
-
It is interesting I believe it is a good method even though I drop down. However, I will be honest and say this it would complicate things for new users dramatically. Also, there would be a lot more fluctuation so how would you be determined if someone were to get something based on their rank and then lose it?
For the record I love the idea I like that Q&A is being paid attention to and I'm all for either way!
Tom
-
Very cool.. be nice if it could be extended to the top 100
Note just seen the Edit - great to see it is now showing pretty much everyone that is active.
-
There must be more than a few of you because there's a big difference in ratings when Don includes all active users. His example shows EGOL ranking 5 and RyanKent 2. When all active users are included, EGOL drops to 43 and RyanKent 59. That, I guess, and perhaps there's a recency bias when you look at only the top 50.
-
I found your work on this quite interesting and I have wondered about it from time to time myself. A couple of things to consider are that many of us who have been on Moz a while have had points in time where we were able to be more engaged and others when we are less engaged. So the longer someone is on MOZ, they are less likely to have a consistent input. (Also, I appreciated Keri's input about former employed Mozzers, etc.)
For me, as someone who has been on Moz a while, the real value has come from relationships I achieve as the result of contacting other Mozzers who posted or answered questions. Really, there are too many to list, but I can say there are at least a half dozen people that I met through Moz who are regular contacts for me. There are several of those with whom I have contracted out SEO work to who did/do a great job.Another thing someone may have mentioned already is that if you were answering questions 3 or 4 years ago you would have gotten less thumbs up, etc. versus today as Moz has improved things like getting people to say yes or no their question was answered.
Thanks again for taking the time to aggregate all that data, it is quite interesting.
-
This was fun. I was glad to see some of the names I watch closely pop to the top.
Will Don earn extra Mozpoints for having earned at "pin to the top"? He should
-
Keri,
This is why I always have thought you were a rock!!! You are still my hero. -
We are glad to see you active in Q&A, Kristen!
-
Oh how right you are. There was nothing like the feeling of fighting my way into spot #20 and then someone came "online" (either active again or staffer) and I was suddenly 21 ... #no #notNOW
Trivia: I think you and I are the only two people in the top 20 of both Inbound & Moz. You have the lowest combined "number" of anyone at 3 + 17 = 20. I am 20 + 13 = 33. Rand would be tied with you (15+5, I think) if he were on the Moz board.
-
There are a few of us that throw off the curve, in that we are former Moz employees so we've spent considerable time on the site, and had that "staff" banner, which made people more likely to mark what we said as Good Answer. It also made us less likely to get an answer Endorsed. Current staff and associates are not included on the leaderboard, so when someone active leaves Moz, suddenly there's a new person appearing high up. I started as an Associate with 35 Moz points, and left with about 9000. I'm sure I surprised a couple of people that paid attention to the top ten.
-
Very cool analysis! In the past I've found it interesting to see how people have gotten to the top of the leaderboard, whether it's blog posts, thumb ups, or answers in the Q&A section.
-
That's really cool Don, I'd love to see this data over time too.
-
Great! And you are quite welcome, EGOL.
-
Thanks for doing this & that's pretty awesome data. I think it's cool to see who the helpful members are and what they're doing to be helpful. It's interesting how the data has changed over time as well. Some of the long-term Moz users have more posts written & more blog comments but fewer Q&A. The top people from the past 12 months are practically the opposite with way more Q&A involvement (people like Patrick, etc.)
-
Thanks! That's mighty nice. Makes perfect sense.
Thank you!
-
Okay, to view questions answered by a person, you'll need to grab their user ID from the URL for their community profile. (For example, your user ID is 446.) Next, swap it out for the user ID in this URL: https://moz.com/community/q/users/446/answers.
To view questions posted by a person, do the same thing with this URL: https://moz.com/community/q/users/446/questions.
Voia! Does that make sense, EGOL? It's not the most elegant solution, but it's what we have (for now).
Christy
-
Both would be nice.
But the one that I use the most at other forums is questions answered. It allows me to appreciate the wisdom of people who I trust.
Being able to view questions posted by a person is valuable too. Some members will post the same question again and again. Sometimes the need to hear the same answer multiple times from different people. Sometimes their questions will be attempts to manipulate and if we look back we see that it is a pattern.
Thanks for asking.
-
Hi EGOL,
Specifically, would you like to be able to easily view all questions posted by a specific person in the forum, or questions they have answered (or at least responded to)?
-
Wow really cool, so instead of 18 I must have been 9, then I like it even more ;-)!
-
Hi Dirk,
The point about PPM made me smile, the great thing and the worst thing about data is that it can be viewed so many ways. I really see your point here.
Another thing that didn't quite make sense to be is on the Thumbs % tab. I'm not really sure how somebody could have less MozPoints than thumbs up as you should receive 1 point per thumb. I guess some people could have had some thumbs down which I didn't take into account and actually increased their ranking in this category.
Don
-
Wow, that is really cool.
I was about to mozzie off to bed and thought I would give Moz one last read and saw this.
I'm glad my little project was enjoyed by others. Big thanks to Peter Nikolow for parsing the data to ensure all active users were aggregated and ranked.
Cheers,
Don

I think that PatrickDelehanty is one of the best persons to read. I read every post of his that I see, and I read some of them twice. If you look at Don's spreadsheet you will see that Patrick has the highest endorsement ratio. He is earning lots of Moz points lately because he has lots of good ideas and is generous with them.
I'd like to know if there is a link that I can click and see all recent posts by a certain person. I would like to have an easy way to read all of Patrick's posts. And I would read MoosaHemani's posts because his ideas are simple and practical, and AlanBleiweiss because he makes me think twice, and MarieHaynes because I think that she understands Google. There are lots of people who I read one of their posts and would like to read more. Just tossing a few out here that come right to mind.
-
Dirk, Q&A section is missing but they (Mods + community dept + Moz staff) actively track all activity here.
Same here. I reading Moz since 2007 but, make mine account somewhere in 2011 and start contributing here in 2015. So all mine points was in last year.
I'm preparing now small script for tracking all activity in 2016 in Top 1000 users maybe
-
Great work guys!
Would be nice if Moz would include this info yearly stats (https://moz.com/blog/the-best-of-2015) - activity in the Q&A section is now completely missing in this overview.
Comparing with total Moz points isn't always the best indicator:
- thumbs up vs total comments makes more sense than thumbs up vs total Moz points
- good/endorsed answers vs total questions answered (idem - don't think that this info is easy to scrape)
As measure for activity in general:
- PPM for the last 12 months (rather than beginning of subscription - little personal bias as I only became active last year - while I created my account in 2008)
Dirk
-
Don and Peter, I love this so much! Great job, ya'll!
-
Don, this is SUPER cool. I'm pinning it to the top of the forum.
-
I edited the post to include all active users. I don't see the need to calculate inactive at this time, perhaps if we do it every 6 months or so we can catch those inactives.
Nice work grabbing the data,
Don
-
Hi Peter, nice work there.
I'll run some formulas on this today and post a new link.
-
Hey - i just found that we can "scrape" historical MozPoints using their profile pages:
https://moz.com/community/users/397332
if you view source this you can see "var mozpoints_data" with JSON inside.I can scrape all historical points for Top1000 for example starting from 2015-11-01 so you can built even better sheet.
-
Ok, here is document:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YGkY2Yz1RefwcG4nqJ1lbnEfTghn7pRtb9di2HICiaA/edit?usp=sharing
captured before hour.
I leave it as-is just extract username but later make regex to extract their posts and ugc posts. This is Top 4291 as far as i see.
Here is procedure how to get it:
- wget https://moz.com/community/users - i love *nix command line tools but you can use web browser and save as HTML.
- Open HTML for editing.
- Find " var top_users =" and delete everything BEFORE it. Now document should start as "[[1,"
- Find "]];" and delete semicolon and everything AFTER it. Now documents should end with "]]"
- As you can see we have well formated JSON. Bad news - i can't import it in Sheets due bug in =ImportJSON function.
- Let's go in PlanB - https://json-csv.com/
- Copy all JSON into clipboard
- Paste it on json-csv.com
- Push button, get CSV
- Import CSV into Google Docs
- Enjoy!
Just use some of mine formulas to extract number of posts or UGC. I can make formula for extracting username too.
-
Hi Peter,
If you want to grab all the data, sure I would make a new one with all members.
You can email me at my user name just as it appears @gmail.com
Don
-
This is pretty awesome! And i like it!
Would you like to extend this in Jan 31 this year for all members that we can see? I can make importer of their table to XML so later we can use =ImportXML. And one bad news "Only members who have logged in within the last 60 days and have 25 or more MozPoints will be shown." So there can be other "top valued" members but we can't see it because this limitation.
And also special users like "ghost in the shell" -> https://moz.com/community/users/2380

Massive unexplained organic traffic drop; disappeared from Google
Hi there,
Search Behavior | | katelynroberts
Our site has experienced a huge organic traffic drop, specifically from Google. The drop occurred on Feb 19 and I've got no clue why it happened. We have not made any significant changes to the website and it doesn't look like there was an algorithm update last week. We don't have any Google penalties or indexing issues noted, and the drop isn't specific to any particular segment/region/keyword. What am I missing? Any advice or insight is super duper appreciated. Our site is a Wordpress/WooCommerice e-commerce site with a blog and long-standing #1 ranks for keywords related to our main product offering. Screen Shot 2024-02-26 at 3.12.25 PM.png

Strange Traffic Movements
Hi there, I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on this... I'm working with a client whose website is experiencing some odd organic traffic patterns. See screenshot attached. As you can see, there was a sudden cliff fall about a month ago, and then it recovered (almost) entirely. Then, a month to the day later, the same thing happened again. What is the likelihood that this is a data glitch vs an algorithm thing? Any light you can shed on this would be appreciated. Thanks,

Google Capital - Antitrust Conspiracy
I think we all have heard about Thumbtack breaking the rules w/ badges. Getting deindexed, then getting a 100M injection from Google capital and having the penalties removed: https://techcrunch.com/2014/08/20/service-marketplace-thumbtack-raises-100m-round-led-by-google-capital/ Our primary competitor is a different marketplace backed by Google Capital. Does anyone know of any low frequency products (reliant on SEO) backed Google Capital that has not won out within search? (i.e. is there any hope of competing against a low frequency marketplace after they have Google Capital backing?)

Would you instinctively mistrust a company that has the top 5 or more search listings?
I have seen a few "lucky"(?) companies dominate spots 1-5 of search results. When I see that, I generally go to #6, 7, or even 10 before clicking. My gut reaction is that the company with 1-5 has manipulated content just to pull me in - much like the guys on the streets of NYC or Vegas shoving handbills at you. Is there any evidence/research/poll about the consumer/user reaction when this occurs?

Safari Has Top Browser in Google Analytics?
I find this hard to believe but it looks to me as though Safari has jumped ahead as our top browser in the month of January. At first glance I would think it was combining mobile safari with desktop safari numbers but then on the 5th spot I see Safari(in-app) which after looking into could be multiple things from safari mobile, bookmarked pages, or Chrome for ios. Just looking for thoughts on this, are others seeing a large uptick in Safari traffic for desktops?

From #2 TO Not Found in top 100 Results, WTF?
So my website was #2 for a targeted keyword on google. (6 months ago: # 😎 (3 months ago: #6) (1 week ago: #2). As you can see, it was moving up nicely, now it's not found on the top 100 search results. Only appears #2/(B) in the local search section. Could that be the reason? Websites that appear on the local search no longer appears in the SERP?

Trailing slash at end of URLs?
Hi, I'm just about to put up a new site and I need to decide between having no trailing slash at the end of the all the URLs, or putting one in there. I think Matt Cutts has a slight preference for them, as stated here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-interview-googles-matt-cutts-on-redirects-trust-more "Matt says he would slightly advocate for using a trailing slash simply because it clearly indicates that a URL is a folder and not a document." However, I'm really wondering. I mean, if people link to my site, they'll tend not to insert a trailing slash, I'm thinking... Your thoughts would be welcome on this one! Cheers, Luke
