Whats the best way to build good baclklinks efficiently?

If you have a local website, then posting to directories is foundational to local SEO, and for that I recommend Moz's own service: https://moz.com/products/local
It's effective and cost-effective. Just make sure you have Google My Business set up first or it won't work out real well for you. You'll find several businesses besides Moz also offer this service as a core part of doing SEO. Now if you're not a local business, it's still not bad practice to post to directories, especially if they are well established authorities within your niche. That's just good outreach.

I have already posted my website on numerous directories. Do you really think this will have negative effect on my search ranking? This was the first thing my teacher suggested in my Digital marketing class.

Thank you so much for all of the great responses!

If there's a local component to the business, building real-world community relationships can be the best way to earn links. For example, joining local business organizations, sponsoring community projects, teams and events, or hosting events.

I agree wholeheartedly with this. In the short term it is possible to buy links and see a short gain in serp but in the long run, content is king. The algorithm is always updated to find those taking shortcuts and once found there is only a hard, if not impossible return.
James has given great advice.

There are some very good articles, courses, and recommended strategies/tactics out there that answer this question more elegantly and thoroughly than I think most people can provide in a forum response.
A course with helpful backlink building tactics: https://ahrefs.com/blogging-course
An awesome article from the wizard: https://moz.com/blog/link-building-tactics-to-acquire-50-links
And my personal recommendation: focus on the content first. Ask yourself honestly, is this content even worth linking to? Would I link to this content if I owned another website? Who would even be willing to link to my website? Answering these questions might help point you in the right direction. For example, if you're a foodie blogger, there are a ton of groups out there on Facebook and other social media sites where you can network with other foodie bloggers and they often will link to each other's recipes and culinary crusades. On the other hand, a lawn care business is better off focusing on his local chamber of commerce and guest blogging for B2B golf course sites or garden blogs. Some niches are easier than others, but make sure you're fishing at the right hole.
Best of luck!

Is This good practice.
We are a UK company but we would like to get listed on some USA business directories. If say we enter our company name, the first and second line of our UK business address but put a USA state and a zip code would this help us for SEO or is this classed as black hat trying to deceive Google. Thank you in advance for any help.

You can visit one SEO forum after the other and 50% of the folks will say 'do this' and the other half will say to do something else. It's always black hat vs white hat and then you still get the grey hat in between. So what does really work? Leon
