Register a Domain: Brand Name VS Product Name
-
Hi All,
Since Google give more priority to brand names and most of the penalized websites by Google's Penguin update are websites which had links with promoted keywords, is it a good idea to register a new domain by the product name (ex: www.leatherbags.com) ?. Or is it good to register the domain by the company or brand name and then build a reputable brand first before targeting product based keywords (ex: leather bags) ?.

This is an interesting question because my company just launched a sister-brand a year ago. We had man discussions about whether or not to make the website domain and EMD or a brand name. what came out of those discussions was that we wanted something long-term. We were going to be selling a highly-competitive product. There were already dozens of companies selling the "product." Branding was really about the only thing that was going to set us apart.
I think your question is a great one because it gets to the core of Wil Reynolds' #RCS argument. Real companies have a brand, and that brand means something. It speaks to s specific group of people who, hopefully, are rabidly loyal fans f the brand. These people might be able to get that same product anywhere...but they choose to buy it from you because your brand makes them feel like they want to feel. A product can't do that. A brand can.
I'd go full-tilt towards the brand. Brand everything, top to bottom, sideways and inside out. Live it, speak it, breathe it. Amazon sells products. You can buy diamond earrings on Amazon. But if you want to seriously impress your girlfriend or wife-to-be, nothing will replace walking into Tiffany's and buying a diamond. Maybe it's the same diamond, but in that moment, it's not just about the product. It's about how that brand makes you feel about yourself. That's a way deeper thing.

When products are discontinued- best way to handle pinned or googled images
What do you lose by deleting a product and it's images from an e-commerce site? We have many product images with pinterest pins and shares or that show up on google images searches. Our site is an active American craft gallery with jewelry, art and handmade gifts from about 300 different artists. Most products are made in small quantities others are 1 of a kind. So we often have products selling out. Most items are organized by artist. Are there good practices to follow that will best keep our social media presence and links? I'd also like to stop buying extra space for all those images on my server Thanks so much Stephen

Optimising for terms which are not in line with brand guidelines
Hi Fellow Mozzers, Happy New Year! - I have a client who run runs a leisure/recreation centre. The centre went through a change of name a couple of years ago. from XXXX recreation centre to xxxx youth and community centre. It is part of a wider organisation and so they have a 'content section dedicated to their centre. On the main landing page we have referred to the centre by both terms - however it seems from GA Search Console stats that the general public still refer to the centre by its old name. The manager would like the old term removed but I wonder whether this would impact on the SEO effectiveness of the page or not? Any Comments would be gratefully received.

What marketing/branding services can you recommend to get more awareness of my site?
I am a programmer, not a marketing or social media genius. It also takes A LOT of time to market your website properly. Are there services that people can recommend that can help get my site out there and known to people more. I am always working on the SEO part and that takes time to improve. Just looking for suggestions. Thank you!

Google + Brand Page for Multiple Locations
We have had our Google Places pages up and running now for a bit, and we are looking to start our Google + Brand page. What is the best way to handle a Brand page with multiple locations? Create a page for each location so we can connect them to their Places equivalent? Create one overall brand page and not connect it to the Google Places? A lot of the information I am seeing is around a year out of date with Google saying "something is coming" but no updates since then, so how have others in similar situations handled it?

Branding Association for SEO, and Google's understanding of a "brand Name"
Hey guys. so I currently run my own business here in Queens NY, for Web Design and online marketing, specifically SEO, SMM, SEM, and some inbound marketing that ties to SMM and SEO. When starting I was in a different business, and had kept my old business name. I plan on re-branding myself January 1st with a brand new name, the name i'm seriously considering is "Media Marketing USA". I was able to purchase MediaMarketingUSA.com. I feel this name is good and bad at the same time, and here are some of the reasons. The pro: Easy to remember, sounds big, and describes my business well. The con: Sounds generic, and I worry it will be hard to brand. I used the mentioning tool provided by Moz and see that nearly everyday 500-1,000 people are naturally mentioning Media Marketing USA, one of my biggest questions is will this give me a competitive advantage in SEO, or will it hurt me in SEO as Google may not see this or understand its a brand name? Do you personally think this is a good name to re-brand myself and use as my main website? The Website itself will be used as a corporate website, a method of inbound and outbound marketing through content creation, Social Media, and of course SEO, targeting specific locations, and specialty services and industries in the NYC area. Please share your thoughts with me, THANKS!!!

Brand & engagement study?
I believe I saw a study put out one time that showed that recognized brands have higher engagement metrics than non-branded sites, but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone point me in the direction of such a study?

Google Displays Domain / URL Above Description?
I am seeing a new SERP format from Google. (new for me at least) In the past the title tag would display as the first line of a listing, followed by description and domain / URL. Today I see the domain / URL as the second line. This is placing an emphasis on "Who". If you have a big brand or a great URL this might be helpful to your CTR. Are you seeing this? What do you think of it?
