      Hi all,

      Is creating more pages better for SEO? Of course the pages being valuable content. Is this because you want the user to spend as much time as possible on your site.

      A lot of my competitors websites seem to have more pages than mine and their domain authorities are higher, for example the services we provide are all on one page and for my competitors each services as its own page.

            Hi Aquib,

            Great question, with a somewhat complex answer. If your business is local, then, yes, you want to create a unique, researched and optimized page for each of your services. Write fully about each service, including its value proposition, pricing, photos, videos, reviews, etc. And, if you've got a multi-location local business, you also want to create a unique, research and optimized page for each of your physical locations. These types of pages are table stakes for nearly all local businesses.

            But, once you've got these basic pages published, our thinking has to shift a bit. It's not that more pages = good for SEO. In the past, much of SEO hinged on the idea that you wanted to create a unique page for each core keyword phrase that research indicated would be a top performer for you. Sometimes this led to some kind of foolish structures, like a website having a page optimized for "car repairs" and another page for "auto repairs", and sites would end up with huge numbers of rather weak pages as a result.

            Now, post-Hummingbird and in a RankBrain environment, we have to think differently, because these have signaled to us that Google is now capable of understanding the shared intent behind similar phrases. Google knows that searches for "auto repairs" and "car repairs" have the same intent, and optimized content development has shifted to think of keywords in terms of topics instead of as standalone phrases. What smart businesses are doing is identifying the most important topics to their companies and their consumers, and then mapping all of the keywords that fit within that topic to a really strong, thorough page that covers the topic.

            So, let's say you own an auto garage, and one of the things you offer is repair of the new Tesla cars. You plug "tesla auto repairs" into a keyword research tool like Moz Keyword Explorer, Answer the Public, or the Google Adwords KW tool and you see a whole bunch of keyword phrases that relate to this topic, like "tesla auto repair cost", "tesla engine replacement cost", "tesla repair center", "tesla body work", etc. In the past, you might have created a unique page for each of these terms, but modern SEO would typically advocate combining all of these related phrases into a single authoritative article that covers everything a consumer could possibly want to know about getting their Tesla worked on in your shop. The goal of this page is to establish your authority and guide the user toward a conversion. We believe that Google is now identifying domain names with authority on specific topics, so if this were your business, you'd want to establish authority on this topic with a best-in-geo/industry page on this topic.

            To dive deeper into Hummingbird and RankBrain, definitely look at the two links, above. If your competitors are stuck in the old ways of creating large numbers of weak pages, your understanding of how Google is evolving could be a competitive difference maker for your brand.               In my opinion, I would say less is more. If you have lots of pages with low page rank you will dilute your overall domain authority. Keep your content rich. Combine and cornerstone content where possible (into less pages), then amplify through social media.

                What's your proudest accomplishment in regards to SEO?

                After many years in the industry, you come to realize a few things.  One of of the biggest pain points for us   at web daytona  was being able to give clients a quick keyword ranking cost estimation. After multiple trial and error and relying on API data from one of the most reliable SEO softwares in our industry, we were able to develop an SEO tool that allows us to quickly and accurately get the estimated cost for a given keyword (s) using multiple variables. Most agencies can relate to that story. It’s something my colleagues and I at Web Daytona have been through before. Finding the cost and amount of time needed to rank for a keyword is a time consuming process. That’s why it’s a common practice to sell SEO packages of 5-10 keywords for about $1000-2000 / month. The problem is not all keywords are equally valuable, and most clients know this. We constantly get questions from clients asking: “how much to rank for this specific keyword?” It’s difficult to answer that question with a pricing model that treats the cost of ranking every keyword equally. So is the answer to spend a lot more time doing tedious in-depth keyword research? If we did we could give our clients more precise estimates. But being that a decent proposal can take as long as 2-5 hours to make, and agency life isn’t exactly full of free time, that wouldn’t be ideal. That’s when we asked a question. What if we could automate the research needed to find the cost of ranking keywords? We looked around for a tool that did, but we couldn’t find it. Then we decided to make it ourselves. It wasn’t going to be easy. But after running an SEO agency for over a decade, we knew we had the expertise to create a tool that wouldn’t just be fast and reliable, it would also be precise. Fast forward to today and we’re proud to announce that The Keyword Cost Estimator is finally done. Now we’re releasing it to the public so other agencies and businesses can use it too.                 I want to rank a national home page for a local keyword phrase

                Hello - We are a nationally available brand based in Denver, CO. Our home page currently ranks #8 (used to be 5) for "real estate photography in Denver" -- I want to improve this ranking, but our home page is generalized and not geared toward Denver, CO but to all of our markets. I'm trying to troubleshoot this and have a few ideas.... I would love advice on the best route, or a different route altogether: Create a Denver-specific page -- _will that page compete with my home page that is already ranked in the top ten? _ Add the keyword phrase in the image alt attribute Add keyword phrase into the content - need to make sure that viewers realize we are national I already updated the meta description to say "real estate photography in Denver and beyond"

                Are core pages considered "cornerstones"?

                To check that I understand the terminology, "cornerstone articles" are posts (or pages) that have some extensive, detailed, important information about a subject that other blog posts and articles can link to in reference, right? For example, a website for an auto repair shop might have a blog post about what cold weather does to a car's transmission and that post could link to a cornerstone "explainer" article that goes into more detail explaining to car-dummies like me what a transmission even DOES. But are core pages also in this category of cornerstone content? Or are they something entirely different and should be constructed accordingly? By "core pages", I mean the base-level pages about what your business is and does. For the repair shop example, I mean things like an "About Us" page or a "Services" page*. *or broken up into individual pages listing the services related to brakes, engine, wheels, etc. Thanks!

                Does having an embedded Google Map still count as a positive SEO signal?

                One locations page, or multiple pages?

                Hi, I represent a franchisor who does all marketing- including local seo- for our franchisees. I've read a lot about local SEO and understand the basics, but have some remaining questions. 1- If our typical territories are quite large and encompass more than one major city, should we create multiple location pages for the same franchise owner? I believe the answer should be yes from an SEO stand point, but the problem is that most of our franchisees naturally just have one business address (their home). Since PO boxes and virtual offices aren't the way to go, what's the best course of action? And when I say major cities, I'm really talking about major cities (and not just small towns/boroughs). Can they just use a friend's/relative's address? 2- There's a lot of info out there about "locations pages," but it's not really clear whether or not you should really just have ONE page for each location, or several pages with different content? For instance, it looks like a lot of businesses are creating just one, "home-page" looking landing page for their individual locations, with everything from services to testimonials on just that one page. Is this preferred over creating several different local pages for that one location? The latter is what we currently do. From the user stand-point, it looks like each franchise location has it's own "mini website" on our main website. For instance, a landing page optimized for the local business name, a local services page, a project/photo gallery page, local review page, etc. It seems like a lot less work just building one landing page for each location, but is the payoff the same? I'm torn between the two strategies- is it really worth the extra work (in terms of traffic + local ranking) to build out the individual pages for the one location? Thanks Moz Community!

                Local SEO for National Brands

                Hi all, When it comes to local SEO in 2015, I appreciate that having a physical location in the town/city you wish to rank is a major factor. However, if you're a national brand is it still possible to rank for local searches when you're based in one location? The reason I ask is that, although our service is national, the nature of what we offer means that it is not inconceivable that people would search for a local variation of our top keywords. Other than the standard things - location in the content, the H1/H2s, title tag, meta description, url etc. - is there anything national businesses can do to help? Thanks in advance. John

                Call Tracking, DNI Script & Local SEO

                Hi Moz! I've been reading about this a lot more lately - and it doesn't seem like there's exactly a method that Google (or other search engines) would consider to be "best practices". The closest I've come to getting some clarity are these Blumenthals articles - http://blumenthals.com/blog/2013/05/14/a-guide-to-call-tracking-and-local/ & the follow-up piece from CallRail - http://blumenthals.com/blog/2014/11/25/guide-to-using-call-tracking-for-local-search/. Assuming a similar goal of using an existing phone number with a solid foundation in the local search ecosystem, and to create the ability to track how many calls are coming organically (not PPC or other paid platform) to the business directly from the website for an average SMB. For now, let's also assume we're also not interested in screening the calls, or evaluating customer interaction with the staff - I would love to hear from anyone who has implemented the DNI call tracking info for a website. Were there negative effects on Local SEO? Did the value of the information (# of calls/month) outweigh any local search conflicts? If I was deploying this today, it seems like the blueprint for including DNI script, while mitigating risk for losing local search visibility might go something like this: Hire reputable call-tracking service, ensure DNI will match geographic area-code & be "clean" numbers Insert DNI script on key pages on site Maintain original phone number (non-DNI) on footer, within Schema & on Contact page of the site ?? Profit Ok, those last 2 bullet points aren't as important, but I would be curious where other marketers land on this issue, as I think there's not a general consensus at this point. Thanks everyone!

                Subdomain versus Subfolder for Local SEO

                Hello Moz World, I'm wanting to know the best practices for utilizing a subdomain versus a subfolder for multi location businesses, i.e. miami.example.com vs. example.com/miami; I would think that that utilizing the subdomain would make more sense for a national organization with many differing locations, while a subfolder would make more sense for a smaller more nearby locations. I wanted to know if anyone has any a/b examples or when it should go one way or another? Thank you, Kristin Miller
