      Hey, all.

      I have client that uses

tags in the navigation for its blog.  For example,

tags might appear around "Library," "Recent Posts," etc.  This is handled through their WordPress theme.

This seems fairly standard, but I wonder whether

tags are semantically appropriate.  Since each blog post is fairly lengthy (about 500-1000 words) with multiple

tags, would it be more appropriate to use

tags for this menu navigation?  Are we cutting into the effectiveness of our

tags by using them for menu navigation?

The navigation is certainly an important page element, and it structures content, so it seems that it should use some header tag.  Anyways, your thoughts are greatly appreciated.  I'm a content creator, not an SEO, so this is a bit out of my skillset.

        Hi everyone!

Only a year late to this question... 🙂

Do you know if anyone has done any A/B testing on how H2s in the nav can negatively affect a website's rankings? I'm on the same page with everyone that it is a big no-no to do, but am getting push back from our development team. They want me to prove that it hurts a website before they change the site. Figured I'd reach out here to see if you any of you have seen tests that prove this.

        Thanks you!

Patrick gave a great answer above.

Now that you mention they are at the bottom of the page, I would definitely remove the h2 or hwhatever and simply style them with css.

Thanks so much for the response!

I may have done a bad job of explaining this, so I just want to double-check that I understand you.

The tags are actually below the blog at the bottom of the page; "Library," for instance, might list the months of blog activity below it (January, February, etc.)  I shouldn't have referred to them as a menu.

The reason that I think header tags might be defensible is that they could help a user understand the organizational structure of these sub-categories.

Does that change your answer at all, or do you still recommend handling this element through CSS?  Thanks!

              Hi there

Usually, H2s and H3s are reserved for your content structure and prioritization of importance in the content on the page, not in your top navigation.

As your content (should) starts with an H1, this semantically will mess your header structure up because you have an H1 below H2s and H3s that live in your top navigation.

If you like the way that those menu fonts and sizes look, I would suggest looking into CSS Font styling - therefore you can set up how you want your font to look in the menu and have a proper header structure on your page content. This will be better for your On-Site SEO.

Hope this helps - let me know if you have any questions or comments! Good luck!

Why is our noindex tag not working?

Hi, I have the following page where we've implemented a no index tag. But when we run this page in screaming frog or this tool here to verify the noidex is present and functioning, it shows that it's not. But if you view the source of the page, the code is present in the head tag. And unfortunately we've seen instances where Google is indexing pages we've noindexed. Any thoughts on the example above or why this is happening in Google? Eddy

                M.ExampleSite vs mobile.ExampleSite vs ExampleSite.com

Hi, I have a call with a potential client tomorrow where all I know is that they are wigged-out about canonicalization, indexing and architecture for their three sites: m.ExampleSite.com mobile.ExampleSite.com ExampleSite.com The sites are pretty large... 350k for the mobiles and 5 million for the main site. They're a retailer with endless products. They're main site is not mobile-responsive, which is evidently why they have the m and mobile sites. Why two, I don't know. This is how they currently hand this: What would you suggest they do about this? The most comprehensive fix would be making the main site mobile responsive and 301 the old mobile sub domains to the main site. That's probably too much work for them. So, what more would you suggest and why? Your thoughts? Best... Mike P.S., Beneath my hand-drawn portrait avatar above it says "Staff" at this moment, which I am not. Some kind of bug I guess.

                Putting Dates In Title Tag

Hi, I have a site were I write previews for sports match ups.  I notice when I don't put the date in the title I rank much better for specific keywords.  I also noticed that most people don't really put in the date when they do the search anyways, especially since google does a good job of showing the most recent pages anyways. The only reason I continue to put the date is because of this whole idea of not having page titles that are duplicate.  So many of our games will be Team A vs Team B Preview, and Im worried that the term "preview" will become so repetitive that google may not like it.  Any tips or ideas on how to approach this issue best? Thanks!

                Description vs meta description

I have an e-commerce website and am trying to create product category pages. I am under the impression that Description is the text that would appear under the title on a google search and I believe the meta description is just what google reads? Is having BOTH important or just description? Is it ok to duplicate the description for the meta description? I know its not good to duplicate descriptions on other products and pages.

Ecommerce Site homepage , Is it okay to have Links as H2 Tags as that is relevant to the page ?

Hi All, I have a Rental site and I am bit confused with how best do my H Tags on my homepage I know the H1 is the most important, Then H2 Tags and so on.. and that these tags should really be titles for content. However, I have a few categories (links) on my homepage so I am wondering if I could put these as H2 Tags given that it is relevant to the page . H3 Tags will my News and Guides etc , H4 Tags will the whats on the footer. I am attached a made up screenshot of what I propose for my homepage  if someone could please  give it a quick look ,  it would be very much appreciated. I have looked at what some competitors do a lot of them don't seem to have h2's etc but I know it's an important factor for rankings etc. Many thanks Pete dJSFQwI

How does the use of Dynamic meta tags effect SEO?

I'm evaluating a new client site which was built buy another design firm. My question is they are dynamically creating meta tags and I'm concerned that it is hurting their SEO. When I view the page source this is what I see. <meta name="<a class="attribute-value">keywords</a>" id="<a class="attribute-value">keywordsGoHere</a>" content="" /> <meta name="<a class="attribute-value">description</a>" id="<a class="attribute-value">descriptionGoesHere</a>" content="" /> <title id="<a class="attribute-value">titleGoesHere</a>">title> To me it looks like the tags are not being added to the page, however the title is showing when you view it in a browser and if use a spider view tool, it sees the title. I'm guess it is being called from a DB. So I'm a little concerned though that the search engines are not really seeing the title and description. I'm not worried about the keywords tag. Can anyone shed some light on how this might work? Why it might not being showing the text for the description in the page code and if that will hurt SEO? Thanks for the help!

Changing a parent category and 301 redirecting

I have a set of three pages that are subpages of a parent. The structure is as follows: mysite.com/directory/personal-widgets mysite.com/directory/commercial-widgets mysite.com/directory/widgets-services The partent page name "directory" really isn't working for where I want these pages to evolve. So I want to change it to "guides" In a world without worrying about google, I would simply change the parent page to guides, so they look like this, and be done with it: mysite.com/guides/personal-widgets But, the obvious problem is that I have external links to the page now. And the pages have a nice PR. And they also have Facebook page Likes and I don't know if I'll lose those. I know that if I should do this I should redirect the pages to the new pages of course. My question is: Will redirecting the old URL to the new URL with a 301 cause anything negative to happen that I might not be expecting?  Does Google dislike Redirects for any reason, or understand they are sometimes necessary?
