Will linking to my citation sources help google recognize them / credit my places account?
-
Or will those sources be discounted by google then similar to how google discounts link exchanges?
I have noticed some pages, like mapquest, don't really have a directory, so google might not be aware of their content unless it is linked too???
In this type of a case, would it help to link to mapquest's search results? then the citation will get picked up by google?

Hi Storwell,
Thanks for being a good sport, and it definitely sounds to me as if you are experiencing heavy lag time between citations being created and being imported into your Place Page. It can take months for this to happen. Given the vagaries of Google's Local product, your other citations could show up tomorrow, next month or never. I know how frustrating this is. I wonder, have you started a thread about this at the Google Places Help Forum to see if you can trigger a response from a Google rep? It doesn't always work, but sometimes it does and you may either get A) a response or B) a spine tingling mysterious edit. I've seen both happen.
If you do decide to create a thread there, make it as simple but thorough as possible. Obviously, give your business info and link to your Place Page. Then, I would suggest that you cite the 5 biggest citations sources where you are cited but which aren't being shown on your Place Page. I would put them in a simple list, with links to the citations.
My bet is that you will get other forum members chiming in over there with, "it takes patience, just wait it out." But, if you could ask a rep for a general idea of when you might expect to see these appearing on your Place Page, you just might get a response.
Good luck!

Thanks Miriam,
I have been trying to get a definitive answer on that question for several months now, which is probably why i came off a little bit aggressive towards Tyler. For that i appologize.
Back on topic though:
I have already gotten our business information listed in 95% of the recomended sites on whitespark and getlisted. But i find that google still only lists our business as having 4 or 5 citations, most of them are not from any of those recognized sites, but from other random extraneous places.
My idea was not so much about pushing google to recognize other websites citations, but to make it pick up citations on the big directories where we are already cited but not yet credited in google places.
I know most people say it takes time, but we are about 5 months in from submitting our info to all those directories and still nothing has showed up on our google places account. So i was looking for ways to encourage google to pick up those citations that are already out there.

Hi Storwell,
Google's decision as to what qualifies as a citation source is not in your hands and Google has not given a definitive public explanation as to how a website becomes deemed appropriate as a citation source. It's an interesting suggestion that if enough people linked back to a certain source, Google might eventually come to recognize that source as a trusted citation provider. This might be a factor in their determination process (i.e. if enough links are indicating that a source is of importance, some type of consideration might be triggered at Google). Interesting idea, as I've said, but I have never read or heard anything to indicate that this is true or correct.
Your best bet is likely to devote your time to getting your business cited by those entities that Google already considers to be appropriate for your industry and region. Using Whitesparks' Local Citation Finder tool will get you off to a very strong start with this process:
http://www.whitespark.ca/blog/post/2-using-the-local-citation-finder
My feeling is that your results will be most effective if you focus on what Google feels are the best citation sources, rather than trying to find a way to convince them that some other source should be included. Hope this suggestion is helpful to you.

If you don't know what a citation is (from previous question you answered) then why are you answering this one? you obviously don't know what you are talking about!

I have had this same issue and recommend that you not link back. But I also think it's a simple enough situation for google to understand what is happening and not dock your links in any way.
I would not link to mapquests search results though. This is very minor.

Viral SlideShare = Google Penalty?
We recently published a slideshow on SlideShare.net and it ended up doing pretty well. It was featured on their homepage for 3 days, and we got quite a few embeds. Unfortunately, a few days later, our rankings in Google tumbled. I'm wondering if this killed our link velocity, which I suppose would have potentially got us a temporary, automated penalty? If you look at slide #4 and beyond, you'll notice that the logo links back to our homepage, and there's also a "View Quote" button that navigates to that specific quote, so users can find out more information, share it, or view any associated pictures. So, in total, there are quite a few backlinks in that slideshow (88 to be exact). Is this what likely caused our drop in rankings? Or is it more likely to be a coincidence? We haven't done anything else in the past couple of months, other than publish an infographic and a press release. And if this is a problem, how would we fix it? I can edit the slideshare and remove some of the links... but it seems sort of silly considering we haven't done anything blackhat. And, it would actually devalue our slideshow, because users would no longer be able to click through to the quotes. Thoughts?

Citations for service providers and different locations
My clients are mostly photographers who work from home, so service based and dont have a full address listed or fear to and many want to service bigger cities and not cities they live in, or want more than one city and state. What are best practices for SEO for multiple locations as well as service providers?

Footer links vs Homepage Content
We are redesigning this site http://www.crystalshop.co.uk/ but not reinstating the ecommerce yet so the primary aim of the site is to increase foot traffic in the shops. The list of shops on the RHS of the homepage is really messy but is useful. I would like to move these to the footer... is this a bad idea? If this is, is it a bit of a gamble to move it to the bottom of the homepage rather than higher up as it is? We are already featuring a link to the shop finder page but I want to get the locations in as prominent place as possible but it's quite a long list!

Google + Local for client with no physical address and multiple phone nos
Hi I have a client who is service-based and goes out to his local customers' homes to conduct his business. He operates from home so does not want to show his home address, he also has a number of local telephone numbers that divert to his mobile. I was wondering which type of category to put his business into, my ideal would be local business but for that I need to add the address the question is can I still hide the address the way you used to in the old format or is there other recommendations to optimise his local placement?

Issues claiming businesses via Google+ places?
Is anyone else dealing with issues claiming a business location on Google places? After already going through the process of claiming our business locations and verifying ownership. It seems that we have to do it again for google+ places. I don't want to create a duplicate of the business, and i'm not sure If I should delete it from my places account, before trying to claim it again on google places. Have you dealt with this issue, or is it new to you as well?

Amazon Store Name Change - Impact on Google Shopping
For a site ranking on page 1 in Google Shopping Results for multiple products, they're thinking of changing their store name to rebrand themselves and their website. They currently have items appearing on page 1 from their stores on ebay, Amazon, buy.com, sears, etc. Does anybody know if changing their brand name on these stores will impact their results on Google Shopping? Thanks, Mark

No option to claim listing in Google Places: country-wide issue
Hi, All! We were trying to advise a client about local SEO, and we ran into the issue of - their Google Places pages (yes, they have several, that's a separate issue) are "unclaimable." Meaning - up at the top of the page there is neither a "Edit this page - Business Owner?" heading or a "Edit this listing - Owner-verified listing" heading. When you try to claim it independently using the phone number (all pages have the same phone number, but different addresses), Google gives you "No address found for this phone number" and the option to now add a new page, which is not quite what we're looking for. This is an Israeli location, and this appears to be an issue with a few other random Israeli pages I checked (I saw pages with neither heading option). But a number of the Israeli pages have "Owner-verified listing." How did they get it? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Regards, Aviva
