Google Penalty?
-
What are the characteristics of a Google penalty - i.e. how do you know by looking at the rankings for your keywords?
Do all keywords that you had previously ranked for fall from say top 5 to nowhere?
Do you disappear from SERP for a branded keyword?
Or something else??
Basically how do you know if you have been penalized?
Thanks

If you have a site that has been matched with a brand then Google will rarely remove your site entirely from the index. Take JC Penny for example. They didn't suffer any rankings for the term JC Penny. They suffered rankings for other terms that they had been building bad links for. Monitoring your keyword rankings and noticing large drops in positions on a per keyword base might give you a better idea if you have been hit with a penalty.

Verify your site in Google Webmaster Tools, and see if there is a notice from Google there. They will sometimes notify you if you have a penalty. If you are completely out of the index, you can file a reinclusion request in GWT as well.
If you want to put your URL here, the community can take a look and see what they can find that may help answer your question, if it is not purely a hypothetical question.

Do a search for site:mydomain.com in Google. If nothing comes up, you have been given the stiffest penalty out there, complete removal from the index.
Try a google search for just your brand name. Are you in the top ten? If not, you are probably being penalized.
Go to your Google analytics. Look at traffic sources and just go to the Google data. Has there been a steep decline somewhere in traffic from Google? You probably have a penalty.
Look at your website content. Do you have hidden text the same color as the background? Do you link out to spammy viagra and gambling sites? Do you have more than 500 links on one page? Is your site keyword gibberish that doesn't even make grammatical sense? Is your keyword bolded every time? Then if you don't yet have a penalty, you probably will soon.
Look at your backlinks to your website. Have you paid for any of those links? Do you exclusively have reciprocal links? Do all your links come from spammy sites? Do all your links have identical anchor text? Do all your links only go to your homepage? Do all your links come from the same c-block? Then if you don't yet have a penalty, your probably will soon.

Google cuts meta title after 60 characters and meta description after 130 characters. Is this new?
Hey community, We noticed, that our meta's are cutted after much lesser characters then it used to. Mainly after 130-135. Did i miss something? Should we basically consider to write meta's constantly with lesser then 130 characters instead of the advised 160 characters? Cheers, Boris

Sudden Drop in Rankings/Traffic/Organic Impressions Without a Penalty
Hi Moz community! I have a question about a local client in Raleigh, NC - http://paragonbuildinggroup.com This client came to us from another agency who had previously not done such a great job with the design/development of the site, or with the marketing of it, so we are somewhat limited in terms of what we can do on design, user experience, etc. But, the SEO is all still easy to tweak and we've been working on it for some time now. As of July 5th, their keyword rankings have dropped dramatically (we're talking from first page rankings to nothing, according to Authority Labs), and they've fallen completely off the map in the SERPs. Their local listing doesn't appear in search results anymore, and WMT is showing a drastic drop in impressions (from 457 on July 3rd to 92 on July 5th). There have been no manual penalties on the site, no recent major development work done, and from what I can see, no signs of hacking and no bad backlinks. The only thing I can see is that Mozcast showed an 83 degree day with some clouds and rain on July 5th, the day that our rankings dropped off, but I can't find any documentation showing what might have changed. Any insight as to what might be going on? I'm completely stumped!

How Does Google Webmaster Tools Come Up with Content Keywords?
When I look at Google Webmaster Tools, in the Content Keywords report there are a couple of ones that are suspect - "prescription", "medications", and "viagra" which are completely unrelated to the content of the site. When I click on the content keyword, and search the source code for those pages, I don't see those words in the source code. Can someone please help me figure out why Google thinks that these keywords are associated with these pages, and how to correct it?

This isn't the client but perform this search in Google.ie - "accommodation newry daft" you get this result - http://www.google.ie/#hl=en&sclient=psy-ab&q=accommodation+newry+daft&pbx=1&oq=accommodation+newry+daft&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=11197l11712l2l12016l5l5l0l0l0l0l186l851l0.5l5l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=f5c640577bb5a285&biw=1600&bih=775 See how Daft.com (2nd results down) has the text "10+ items" in the description- my client has this as well as do many other competitors but its not present in the meta description tag. Anyone know how to get rid of this and get the good old meta descrition in the SERPs? Thanks BUsh

Major update to site architecture (outline)-Is Google going to drop?
I'm working with a lawyer client who has a table-based, outdated site. Her nav links consist of a jumble of topics and static pages in one long sidebar list on the home page. I'm moving her site to Wordpress and I've recommended that she organize the site based on categories that roughly match the topics/keywords she wants to rank highest for in Google. The site will be much better organized and coded and the URLs for the new launch will be much stronger for SEO by being targeted and coded properly. So the site should rank better after, right? Right??? I know that when Google crawls the new architecture, it's not going to find the expected long sidebar list of internal nav links. It'll find better, more keyword targeted internal nav links. But will that keep the site from getting dropped off page 1? I'm speaking w/ the client tomorrow and if she's going to drop or get bounced around, I feel like I should prepare her and let her know roughly what might happen. I'm thinking based on my current understanding that I should tell her to expect to be bounced around for a few weeks, but in the end she should rank higher than before. What would you do/say?
