What are the best tactics for SEO on a brand new site?
-
What is on everyones to do list when starting SEO work on a brand new site that has had no SEO work done in the past?
-
This sounds wonderful! Can you give an example?
-
I start with keyword research then on site optimization - Title tags content etc then i do a press release with anchor text links with pr web and then move on to top level directories. Then Find sites to introduce you to the world (depends on what type of site you are) Look at competitor back links for ideas - I hope this helps with a starting point .

Depends A LOT on the subject matter and intended audience of your content. Whenever possible allow for user generated content as well, similar to the Q & A section. If your users can get involved they will help you build links naturally.
Otherwise I am very similar to EGOL in my methods. Great content = Links.
-
Make sure you have the space and ability to publish great content - many sites don't offer the possibility to publish exceptional pieces of content (no blog, no flexible section, etc.) and therefore won't be able to take use of this way of attracting links. There are tons of sites out there which don't even have a news page ...
Once that's checked, be creative at the time of creating content and focus on promoting it appropriately in order to attract natural linkbuilding.

I know where my links might come from before I build content.
In the past when I did traditional linkbuilding I would find sites that ALREADY link out to content on other domains. I would study what they link to and then build either superior or complimentary content and then let them know what I have, hoping that I would get the link.
Today I do passive linkbuilding. I decide what might succeed on sites like stumbleupon, reddit and slashdot.... or on the blogs and news sites that cover my niche. Then just post the content on my site and visitors submit for me.

Love the answers!
Once all that is done, What about link building? What is the first few things everyone does?
-
I like that.... "Decide what success looks like." Nice.
Thumbs up!

Read the SEOmoz beginners guide. It's a great resource that can serve as a sort of how to/check list of activities to develop a good SEO foundation.

Other than have a great product? Decide what success looks like
You haven't given enough information really, but I start with Research, Information Architecture, Paper Dolls, UX, UI, goals and analytics.
Then SEO becomes easy

On a brand new site? Kickass content is needed before you can optimize or do effective linkbuilding.
But... before you create kickass content it is best to do some keyword research.
But... even before that it is important to determine if you have the resources needed to compete in that niche and a method of monetization.

Am I better off with ten links from one site or one link from ten sites?
I am writing a series of linked-back articles for a highly-ranked web publisher, but wonder if I'd be better off sharing the articles across different sites. My goal is to grow our domain authority and SEO rankings.

Dodgy linkbuilding tactic?
Hello I'm hoping someone can help...does the below link building tactic sound a bit suspect... An editorial link (articles are subject to review) on a relevant, good authority site, however, it's free to submit an article and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of engagement/comments. Here's the site in question if that helps! http://www.health-host.co.uk/ Thanks for any help you can offer. Alice

Should I dicard them in my SEO estrategy?
Hi there! Some of you guys told me that I shouldn't concede too much priority to the directories in my linkbuilding stratregy. But should I incorpore it (In case it has a little impact in SERPs) or directly discard it as it has NO influence at all, what would it be more important quantity or quality? Could it have more impact a directory with PR 7 as 100 directories of PR 3 or below? Thanks

Content Strategy - High Value on Lots of Sites vs. High Value on One Site
Good afternoon Mozzers. I have a discussion based question and I'd be interested to know your thoughts. I currently implement a content strategy where we create a series of high value How-to written articles, relevant to our audience and then work at getting them placed on multiple high value websites. I have just been offered an opportunity with a PR6 domain to create a similar series of content but place it all on their site with links back to ours through a dedicated section. So my question is would I gain more value from small amounts of great content in lots of places vs. a lot of great content in on place? Effectively 1 link from 20 sites vs. 20 links from 1 site.

What is the best white hat seo link building strategy?
My goal is to build links that comply with Google's Quality Guidelines. I am wondering what is the best way to approach webmasters or bloggers about submitting guest posts or writing content. I have done a competitive analysis, and have a list of potential link sources, but I am not sure what approach to take next. Any advice or strategy would be appreciated.

Blogs that Link to Random Sites
Posting articles on the MyBlogGuest article gallery can lead to several sites offering to publish your guest post on their blog. However many of these sites will accept any guest post that links out to anything from socks to hotels. Would you avoid guest posting on these sites? (if it would take very little time to do)

Should we fire our SEO Vendor?
Dear SeoMozers, We are working on ranking towards some hyper competitive keywords (each query has millions of searches a month) and working with an external SEO Vendor. We were not satisfied with the progress, therefore we asked them to send a revised SEO Plan. Here's what they proposed: 1. On Page Optimization (standard techniques) Off Page Optimization 1. Directory Submissions (100) 2. Article Marketing (Two unique 300 word articles to be submitted to 300 directories) 3. Press Release (Two Press Releases to 100 PR Sites) 4. Classified Ads Submissions 5. Business Listings 6. Link Reinforcement (Create wheel to circulate traffic) 7. Blog Submissions, Commenting, Forum Posting 8. Web 2.0 Link Building (Squidoo Lens, Hub Page, Link Wheel etc) 9. One Way Links (Not Specified how many) Our concern is that this sounds like low quality link building. We've given them 19 top keywords to achieve rankings for and will be paying $20-25K to achieve Top 3-5 rankings for the targeted terms. Do you think this strategy would work or should we change the SEO Vendor?

Which Directory Sites to Choose?
Hi All I am a newbie to SEO and have a quick Q. Assuming that appropriate steps would be to; a) Ensure all onsite matters are are correct, title tags, meta descriptions, redirects, canonical issues. b) Submit to Directories c) Build Links I am approaching step b) Which Directories are worth submitting to? For those which require payment, how can I decide which are value for money or should I just use SEOMOZ list of links and assume that theyre worth the $50 - $100 if my higher ranking competitors have links from these directories. Also, can this be looked opon as grey/black hat 'buying of links'? Thank you Sean www.pretavoir.co.uk
