How? Title in Google differs than actual title tag

Just curious on how sites do this? If you search for a video (perhaps Green Lantern Trailer), you'll see the YouTube results in Google/Bing listed as
YouTube - Green Lantern Trailer
but when you go to the page, the actual title tag displayed is
Green Lantern Trailer - YouTube
I've seen other sites do this too. I'm just curious what they are doing (I don't see any other title tags in the html)? I thought your title tag is what is displayed in SERP?

Perhaps its some SEO testing.

Search for "dresses" and check title tags for JCP and cache.com (both on page 2).

I believe that Google is matching the query.

Thomas, I checked the page with OSE and saw no links at all. It's possible Google sees links not captured by OSE but that means they are newer or weaker links. It seems unlikely but possible. Even so, very odd they would change a page's title in SERPs based on the anchor text of weak links.

That is especially interesting considering the term "lamps" by itself is never used once on the page. "Table Lamps" is used frequently but they somehow managed to isolate "lamps" by itself and use it.
I checked OSE just in case there were many links using "lamps" as anchor text but no links are visible for the page.
I really question how that was done and in this circumstance, why it was done.

Google is changing lots of title tags these days - to titles that they feel will better please the searcher.
For example... go to google.com and search for "lamps"..... check what is displayed for JC Penny... then go into the site and see their actual title tag is entirely different.

I cannot duplicate your result. All the youtube results in Google SERP for "YouTube - Green Lantern Trailer" appear as Green Lantern Trailer - YouTube. When I visit the page, the title is the same.
Can you offer an exact keyword search along with the result page where the title does not match SERPs?

Seeing as youtube is a google property they can do what they want
additionally, google has been known to change title tags in their SERPs from time to time and lately they've been doing it more. here is some more information directly from google -http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=679eb9f272a5a3bf&hl=en

Virtual URL Google not indexing?
Dear all, We have two URLs: The main URL which is crawled both by GSC and where Moz assigns our keywords is: https://andipaeditions.com/banksy/ The second one is called a virtual url by our developpers: https://andipaeditions.com/banksy/signedandunsignedprintsforsale/ This is currently not indexed by Google. We have been linking to the second URL and I am unable to see if this is passing juice/anything on to the main one /banksy/ Is it a canonical? The /banksy/ is the one that is being picked up in serps/by Moz and worry that the two similar URLs are splitting the signal. Should I redirect from the second to the first? Thank you

Dissapeared from Google - Urgent
We are new to the whole SEO thing and could be described as total numpties as we have hidden away from it, scared of what it means and what might happen if we open that can of worms. But after seeing a 25% drop in visitors over a year, and a continued fall, we thought we better try and get our heads around what we need to do to improve our chances on google. Consequently we have signed up to MOZ and are exploring its crawl results and trying to learn and action things. Today we noticed that we have dropped fairly completely from Google for many of our top key words. We are based in Italy,our site is in Italian and we only target Italy. Our homepage is http://www.shoechic,it and two of our top keywords that have dissapeared are: "scarpe sexy" & "Scarpe Pleaser" We would love to hear if anyone can throw some light in why this dramatic change may have taken place and what we can do to address it. Just Curious if this is an SEO No-No! I have set up the box to do some cool SEO transitions but am curious if I am loosing on a signifigant amount of internal linking considering anchor text or if Google recognizes the h2 as anchor text. I can't find where the # of indexed pages are on my google analytics. I tried the instructions below, but the index status was not an option on my dashboard. View the Index Status page: On the Webmaster Tools home page, click the site you want. On the Dashboard, click Google Index, and then click Index Status.

Keywords on title
hi, some pages of my website showing keywords attached in google as part of page title, but the title doesn't have that keyword in it. Title tag best practices when domain and brand are the same
I know the old standard for title tag optimization is to use your brand name in the title for a multitude of reasons, all of which are indisputable The most important reason being any strength and awareness can aid in click-thru. But does this hold true for exact match domains? Considering the way a search result is displayed, any awareness and strength derived from using the brand in the title is automatically included in the search result of an exact match domain without having to sacrifice valuable characters in the title. The organic value (or value beyond simply seeing the brand displayed and nothing else) can't have that much of an impact, can it? For Example, given the result attached, is it worth it to repeat dog.com in the title if it is already showing in the result? dog.png
