Why is Benetton ranking with tracking parameters?
-
For this search:
https://www.google.com/search?q=benetton&pws=0
I see the following URL ranking #1
http://www.benetton.com/?utm_source=centrum.sk&utm_medium=listing
Why is this happening? I could likely figure it out but I'm busy so I was hoping someone could dig around and let me know
Anyone?
Incidentally, Benetton is in the middle of a massive campaign at the moment so it's strange timing for them to have this showing up and screwing with their GA tracking...
EDIT: I should clarify, Benetton is not a client - I don't know anyone who works for or with them. I'm just curious why this is showing up.

They have links on that domain with that exact tracking parameter. Maybe a campaign at one point?

Tom
Looks like a crazy combination of things;
1. Search [site:benetton.com] and it reveals their Italian page it.benetton.com as their intended 'home' page.
2. The Italian page does not have a robots meta tag, therefore it is indexed but only in google.it
3. Go to google.it and search [benetton]... annnd... you get the Italian site, no tracking URLs - site-links etc, per normal.
4. So the 'robots noindex/nofollow' on the www page must be because they're trying to index the Italian site but not the US site? I'm honestly not an expert on the correct way to handle these international issues. They have basically two identical sites on separate sub-domains, the only difference being the language. Doesn't seem like the right way to handle this to me...
5. www.benetton.com does not redirect properly for /index.html or /index.htm
6. Because of all of this, Google USA is not given a homepage on the www subdomain to index.
7. BUT, there is an internal link (at least one I can identify) pointing to http://www.benetton.com/?utm_source=centrum.sk&utm_medium=listing on this page on the blog - so the robots noindex/nofollow is ineffective because Google likely sees the presence of the tracking parameters and thinks its a different page? Or this is one of the few times where Google can choose to ignore the canonical tag (as they have said its a strong directive).
(As a side note, many of their other www US pages have noindex/nofollow, but there are still about 2,500 pages in the index from the US site.)
Conclusion
- Benetton is attempting to have their Italian version of the site be the main website, they are incorrectly attempting to not index the US site.
- Links internally and externally with that tracking parameter are the only indication to Google US for the homepage.
- Because of incomplete homepage redirection (and perhaps one of the few instances where Google ignores the canonical), they have indexed the page with the tracking parameters.
Thoughts? Does all that makes sense?

I'm slightly confused though - why is the tracking id using centrum.sk/?
I see that the BBC is linking to them, not sure if this is cause or effect:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-15778377
Maybe they just googled Benetton and lifted the URL?
-
I agree tweaking my google search the link drops out if i search on the last hour but shows up for other time periods. As you say it has links from all over the web pointing to it e.g BBC news is running an article on the campaign. I am guessing this a case where they are trying to limit the campaign showing up in the results judging by the write up on the various news outlets.

OMG - yeah not only the weird tracking parameters URL but the main homepage (www.benetton.com) is noindex, nofollow which I suspect will screw things up a little..... Wow.
-
While I don't have the answer, I did notice a few other curiosities....
The page is tagged noindex, nofollow
The page shows a header code of 304
There are a lot of backlinks to the particular URL. Even a Google search of the url shows over 100 listings.
A wild guess....there are a lot of sites with fresh links to the page using that specific URL. The page shows viral content, images of President Obama kissing other world leaders. It has led to a spike in traffic. One of the tweaks in Google's new freshness change may have allowed this anomaly to slip through.
I have also seen results stating Benetton pulled the Pope version of an image after legal action was taken. There may be some scrambling on Benetton end which is causing confusion as well.

Universal Analytics & Google Tag Manager - Track URLs that include hashes
Does anyone have any experience tracking URLs that include hashes (#) using Universal Analytics and Google Tag Manager? Can it be done using GTM's container for UA, using the "more settings" options? Or building another tag to work with the GTM UA container? The fallback I'm considering is implementing the UA code in GTM for every page as Custom HTML with the "ga('send', 'pageview', location.pathname + location.search + location.hash);" solution, rather than GTM's specialized UA tag. I'm not yet sure what problems may arise from that, if any. Thanks in advance.

Google Analytics Tracking Code Problems
I am having a problem with my Google Analytics tracking codes. The relevant GA tracking codes have been entered into the source code of certain sites I'm running campaigns on, but Google Analytics is still telling me that the tracking code hasn't been installed - yet it has. What could possibly be the problem here? I have checked that these sites don't run off multiple domains, and that the tracking code has been entered in the correct place within the source code - and yet I am still having problems with GA. Any suggestions?

Does traffic coming from Adwords increase overall Domain Authority or Page Rank?
If I'm setting up an Adwords campaign, will setting my homepage as the landing page boost my domain rank? and will the Page Rank of the landing page get boosted because of the high click rate coming from the Adwords campaign?

Google Analytics subdomain ecommerce tracking flatlines :-(
Buongiorno from 19 degrees C wetherby UK 🙂 This website http://www.philpotts.co.uk/ contains a shop sub domian @ http://shop.philpotts.co.uk/. I configured the site Ga analytics code to include the subdomain (see below code). I had to do this as i was getting refferal data from the actuall subdomain. But after following the instructions on p117 of cutroni's ga book things have gone wrong, mainly now eCommerce data has dissapeared 😞 So my question is please: "Why has installing the GA code above caused eCommerce tracking to suddenly go dead?" Grazie tanto,

Can't figure this ranking out..
Hi, This is puzzling me. I've been in the second/third position for a week or so for my best keyword. That is for Google US unpersonalized, which is the one that brings more traffic, as far as I understand. It can't get MUCH better. Well, I can be first, but second and third position is really awesome in my case (highly competitive keyword according to SEOMOZ PRO). Then, why on earth my traffic for that keyword was 8 times better a year ago?? I mean, a year ago I received an average of 800 visits per day and now I can barely reach 90 visits per day being in the second / third place. Visits can't increase from 90 to 800 just for increasing one spot. I've never seen in my stats such drop in my rankings. I thought that due to google updates my site was sent below the 20th position or something. But my I was shocked today when I saw that I still have the second/third position Am I crazy or this looks wrong? The page title and description that shows in google hasn't changed, so people looking for that keyword are seeing the same as one year ago. It is not a seasonal or time sensitive keyword. My best guess is that people are now always logged in and results are personalized. Don't know much about personalized results but I don't think you can optimize much for those. If that's the case, then how on earth can we optimize a page if everybody is using personalized results? Is there a way to improve your rankings in those cases? Thanks, Enrique

Cover my tracks / two websites on the same Analytics
Hi, I've got 2 websites and I like one of them to make some links to the other one. These two sites are on the same Google Analytics account. They have been set up 3 month ago and they have some articles on them. I've heard that Google can see that those websites are related in my Analytics and use this information to give less power to the link I could make between them. What do think about it and what do you recommend me ? Shoud I closed the Analytics account ? Or down one of the website and rebuilt it whith a different domain / host / analytics ? The thing is if I delete one of the website i'll be force to republish the articles, because there are links on it, and they're part of a deal I've already made. Thank you

Not ranking in Google.com
I put up my last site on the web since a month. So far I have been optimizing mainly to Hungary and I got used to that my content was indexed in a day and if content was good it sometimes appeared in the first two pages in a couple of days. Now with my new site I am targeting google.com. I put it up since a week, sent the sitemap to google, it was intresting for mee te see that even the pages to get into the web index needed two days. Seomoz says my site is all right besides some duplicate content issue i will solve soon. So it is past a week and even if I copy a complete sentence from the beginning of my home page and paste it into google my site does not appear. I also purchased couple of backlins but they have not appeared so far as well. Is that really this slow? Am I to impatient? Or should there be something else problem I should be looking for? Thanks for any feedback
