Lack of keyword targetting
-
Consider a scenario where a website has a considerably higher no. of back links than its competitors along with a greater Domain Authority, Mozrank etc. The only thing missing is keyword targeting. In such a case, rather than trying to build new links with keyword rich anchor text, wouldn't it be better to first focusing on changing the anchor text of the links that are already pointing to the website? How much impact would this have on its rankings? If the gap in back links, and the "value" of the back links is far greater than its competitors wouldn't this in itself help to change things around drastically?
-
But as far as your onsite efforts go are you targeting keywords e.g. are your pages optimised? If not then I'd recommend doing this first before changing any anchor text.
Beyond this I would start slowly only changing few existing backlinks from sites with high mR/mT etc and changing the anchor text on these while also focusing on building new links from high mR/mT sites.

Ranking for what? The website is not targeting any keywords whatsoever. All backlinks are using the company name or website url. The website has a lot of backlinks from high PR websites and in many cases we have control over changing the anchor text as most of the back links are from partners/clients.

Hi,
Where does the site currently ranks in comparison to competitors? Do the existing links to your site contain the website name/URL? How many backlinks are you considering changing? How many keywords?
To go back and change the anchor text of all back links will look unnatural. I'd lean towards identifying a few existing backlinks from sites with high mR/mT etc and changing the anchor text on these while also focusing on building new links from high mR/mT sites.

I earned some high-quality backlinks, but the target page's ranking is not improving. Why?
Within the last three months, I acquired five .EDU backlinks and two editorial links to a page ranking for a competitive keyword. After the first few links came through, the page jumped from #15 to #7. It stayed there with minor fluctuations for a couple weeks. I earned a couple more good links, and the page fell as far as #44. It has recovered a bit then, but has not returned to the first page. It is worth noting that the .EDU links were achieved by sponsoring university programs. Could Google possibly be recognizing this as a link scheme? Are the links being earned too quickly? I don't believe it could be either, as the links reside on high quality, trustworthy sites and there wasn't a sudden major influx of them. Thank you for your insight! Also, I think my username tricked Moz into thinking I'm a staffer. Not the case!

Will links from startup/tech blogs help a site rank for *money* keywords?
If a startup has a tech blog (say, domain.com/tech) and a startup journey blog (on domain.com/journey — think groovehq.com/blog), will garnering high PA/DA links to those pages help the root domain rank for keywords related to the startup's services? For example, continuing the Groove example, will quality links to their aforementioned startup blog help them rank the homepage for Online Help Desk Software? Even when those links are from non-helpdesk content on non-helpdesk sites? My theory is that links from high DA sites won't be a bad thing — as long as they're not from spammy pages and done naturally. In some niches, where it's hard to get organic product-related links, this might be a worthwhile strategy. Am I right? Or sadly misguided...? 🙂 EDIT: BTW. The niche I have in mind is fairly uncompetitive, and it'd be easier to garner links from the startup/tech community than the niche community itself.

How to find keywords in super-small niche?
hi I try to find good keywords to rank a “dog day care” site for and can't seem to find anything that makes sense. This is a company that sells franchises of their service – dog day care. So there is a “mother site” where they advertise service in general and try to sell franchises. If you go “pet franchise”; “pet franchises”; “dog day care franchise” etc – you get virtually zero traffic keywords. On the other hand if I use “doggy day care” it will bring mostly people who are looking for a place to leave their dog for a day. Doesn't make sense either way. Same goes for local sites. If you look at “doggy day care location” it brings next to nothing. Using “doggy day care” without specific location doesn't make sense either, as certain location applies only to people living in say 50 mile radius. I would really appreciate any ideas how to approach this. How to promote small “dog day care” franchising company? And how to promote particular locations? Thank you in advance, JJ

Keyword drop with its own appropriate landing page
I have a question to ask. I have these two generic keywords - e.g. shoe and shoes. These two keywords have its own landing pages - www.example.com/shoe.aspx and www.example.com/shoes.aspx Now here is my dilemma. Every time I do link building on these keywords using its own landing pages (www.example.com/shoe.aspx and www.example.com/shoes.aspx), the landing page which is "www.example.com/services.aspx" is the one that ranks on the SERPs while the appropriate landing pages (www.example.com/shoe.aspx and www.example.com/shoes.aspx) go down in the results. So what I did was I started using the services page ( www.example.com/services.aspx) for both keywords - shoe and shoes. Now what happened then and now was that, the shoe and shoes appropriate pages (www.example.com/shoe.aspx and www.example.com/shoes.aspx) go up in the SERPs while the services page (www.example.com/services.aspx) go down. I do not know what to do. Pls help

Link Targets
What do you think of getting links from... high quality sites, with many non spammy high trusted links to them....but their traffic has been majorly hit by panda. I suspect perhaps for having too many thin pages. Is persuing links on these sites a good idea or not? I'd welcome opinions.

Which parameter does google value more: number of incoming links or on-page optimizations (meta data and keywords)?
I am just starting with the SEO and I have a client in the travel industry whose website is not ranked well on the search engines. After doing the seo audit we see that the website's on-page optimization (meta titles, meta description, meta keywords and h1, h2, etc tags) is bad. At the same time there are very few incoming links into the website. These are the key 2 issues we found. In order to proceed most effectively, what do you think would be more effective to focus on first? Doing the on-site optimization or focusing more on the link building? Do the search engines, in particular, google - weight more either of these parameters? thanks so much for all your advice! all the best egle

One keyword per page?
I have a health insurance lead gen domain. One of the keywords I want to rank for are "student health insurance". If I have a related keyword like "aetna student health insurance", is it better to include that keyword and backlinks with that anchor text to my "student health insurance" page or do a separate page for that keyword?
