Sub Domain vs. New Root Domain for New Brand
-
Would you recommend a new brand be placed as a subdomain to the existing parent company or create a separate root domain for this new brand?
-
Unless there is a very strong reason, I would go for a separate TLD - sub domains are a lot less popular than they used to be and do tend to be more for sites that perhaps have lots of country specific content or really want to keep it all together, as William said.
And if you went for a sub domain, do you not think that the new brand will be just as visible as if you went for sub folders? If not more so?
Cheers,
Andy

Thanks for your help Andy. To answer a few of your questions:
-
The Brand will only exist in the US market.
-
There are no plans for product expansion
-
The brand is connected to the parent company as they are the main distributor and provider of most of the raw materials.
We have already decided against using a sub-folder because the brand will be more visible to consumers than the parent company is.
-
-
If they are two entirly different bands and you are not using the same content I would say break it out into it's own so you can develop the reputation for it and you could say sister company of Brand A.
Sub domains are more for stuff like video.domain.com but I have seen more companies break it out.
Now if this is just another service offering I would find a way to include it somewhere in your main domain to reduce confusion.
-
A number of other questions need to be asked here first...
- Is this brand completely separate from the parent?
- Do you plan on expanding on it?
- Is the market UK, European, Asia, etc? A country specific TLD might be a better choice
Those are just a few considerations - I have to say, I am not a fan of sub domains as it does tie the site into the parent long term and if you ever have a need or requirement to break away, it just makes it more awkward.
The reason I asked about the brand being seen as a part of the company, has the parent not thought just about moving to the existing site structure? www.parent.com/brand
Cheers,
Andy

I want to shift my website to a new domain name, with my brand name. Would Lose rankings
hi, Currently i have a 18 year old domain name "www.jaipurdentists.com". I wish to shift to a new domain name "www.thaperdental.com". primarily because of two reasons: 1. I have a same name competitor with domain "www.thaperdentalclinic.com", the site gets benefited because of the brand name domain. 2. The new domain name "www.thaperdental.com" is better to remember and pronounce. Even if I redirect all web-pages, properly to the corresponding web-pages on new site. Should I go ahead with this? will it result in drop in rankings!

Redirect multiple domains to 1 domain or not?
Hi there, I have client who has multiple domains that already have some PA and DA. Problem is that most websites have the same content and rank better on different keywords.
Technical SEO | | Leaf-a-mark
I want to redirect all the websites to 1 domain because it’s easier to manage and it removes any duplicate content. Question is if I redirect domain x to domain y do the rankings of domain x increase on domain y? Or is it better to keep domain x separately to generate more referral traffic to domain y? Thanks in advance! Cheers0 -
Redirect old shop to new domain
I have an old Magento shop placed on a subdomain: http://webshop.teamout.dk/ Now I have created a new shop in another store system called ShopOrama on a new rootdomain: What is the best way to get all my already indexed sites from google to redirect to my new site with the new META title + description? I have tried the Magento > Catalog > URL Rewrite, but it contains over 500 redirects already and making custom redirects for all my sites will take a lot of time. Because of the old site being a subdomain I can't change address in GWT. I'm looking forward to your solutions

Moving to New Domain - Ranking impact
I understand that when migrating to a new site, even if done perfectly (page level 301s etc) that rankings will drop in the short term and each site will be impacted differently. I picked up the following comment and was wanting to get a few experts thoughts on whether I can quote this to my client: "In our experience, even when 301's are correctly executed, we see a short term fall back (7-30) days and then about a 90% carry through after that period for about 90 days and then back to full strength. "

Sub-domain or sub-folder for a blog?
Traditional thinking suggests sub-domains are treated as separate sites and so don't pass on link juice, but I've heard mixed opinions. I'm very much a believer in sub-folders but I'm interested to hear some other opinions. Thoughts?

.me vs .com for new personal blog site
Hi guys, this is my first ever post on SEOMoz (woo!) I have researched and I did see someone else ask something similar but I still wasn't clear, so i hope this question is not considered a duplicate and can go on to help other people too Enough waffle For various reasons I am moving our company blog to startup a personal blog instead and I have bought a couple of appropriate domain names in a firstname/lastname format for the new blog, basically: myname.me and iammyname.com My question is, which would you consider 'better', if either, for SEO? (bonus point: are there any other non-SEO factors I should consider?) Obviously the second name is longer, but it is a .com and I hear all the time that .com is king and .me is waaaay behind Ultimately I want to rank #1 for my name If it was your site and your blog and you had my choices which one would you go for? Many thanks for your help. I'm looking forward to being part of the SEOMoz community and learning a lot from you guys, cheers, Nick

External Links from own domain
Hi all, I have a very weird question about external links to our site from our own domain. According to GWMT we have 603,404,378 links from our own domain to our domain (see screen 1) We noticed when we drilled down that this is from disabled sub-domains like m.jump.co.za. In the past we used to redirect all traffic from sub-domains to our primary www domain. But it seems that for some time in the past that google had access to crawl some of our sub-domains, but in december 2010 we fixed this so that all sub-domain traffic redirects (301) to our primary domain. Example http://m.jump.co.za/search/ipod/ redirected to http://www.jump.co.za/search/ipod/ The weird part is that the number of external links kept on growing and is now sitting on a massive number. On 8 April 2011 we took a different approach and we created a landing page for m.jump.co.za and all other requests generated 404 errors. We added all the directories to the robots.txt and we also manually removed all the directories from GWMT. Now 3 weeks later, and the number of external links just keeps on growing: Here is some stats: 11-Apr-11 - 543 747 534 12-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 13-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 14-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 15-Apr-11 - 521 528 014 16-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 17-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 18-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 19-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 20-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 21-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 26-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 27-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 28-Apr-11 - 603 404 378 I am now thinking of cleaning the robots.txt and re-including all the excluded directories from GWMT and to see if google will be able to get rid of all these links. What do you think is the best solution to get rid of all these invalid pages. moz1.PNG moz2.PNG moz3.PNG
