Organic vs Places (Maps) Searches
-
I realize one can use the google adwords keyword tool to get rough organic search volume, but Is there a method to see how much a keyword is searched within specifically google places? That is, seperated out from the organic search?
Ideally i would like to see how often certain keywords are search for in google, v.s. in google places/maps directly.
maybe it is not possible.
cheers,
storwell

Hi Storwell,
Unfortunately, there is no tool that I know of that does this. I was actually discussing this recently with some other good Local SEOs and the consensus was no, this doesn't exist. It would be nice if it did!
One fellow suggested making a rough estimate from the number of Adwords impressions that actually trigger local results in the SERPs, but we agreed, that was kind of a tough approach.
Sorry not to have a can-do answer for you on this one. There are many local research tools that have yet to be developed. The market - though giant - is still new-feeling to many, and rather under-served.
Kind Regards,
Miriam

Not possible I am pretty sure, you can only split up data from - Mobile sources and desktop devices currently.
Google needs to develop some type of analytic offering showing an overall view for places accounts, it is very limited what you can do if you manage an account with say 800 locations in places.

Target Search Terms Changed - does this affect traffic?
We spent the last 12 months targeting a particular search term (mortgage broker) and have been ranking well for it consistently for about 6 months now. We have decided to change the target search term to something else (insurance broker) but noticed that our traffic has started to decline since we started doing this. We are still ranking well for the initial search term, and our ranking is slowly improving for the new targeted search term in SERPs but traffic is down about 60% from January. Is it normal/expected for this to happen?

'And' vs '&'
Hi everyone This question has been running through my mind since a few days now. Does Google recognise 'and' / '&' as the same? Say for example my website url is: appleandorange.com and my keyword for my company is Apple & Orange. If i Focus on Apple & Orange for on-page SEO will google also recognise apple and orange ? Or will I have to on-page SEO seperately for Apple and orange? So for instance if I keep focusing on Apple & Orange will my website appleandorange.com appear on google? Thanks in advance

Counting Places LIstings in Manual Rank Checking?
Hello, When doing manual keyword lookups, are people counting Google Places listings in their rankings? E.g. If the website's places listing is the "5th" item on the results page, do you count that keyword as "5"? -- even if the organic listing comes up first at, say, position $20? On one hand I'd be in favor of including them in order because "who cares" if the user sees your website first, or the Places listing that points to your website first? But then again, it's my understanding that places listings are highly variable, so that they should be skipped entirely in calculating rank positions. So what are others out there doing? And by places of course I mean Google + Local/Plus or whatever they are calling it this week. Thanks!

How trustworthy is Google's Keyword Tool for organic search research?
Can anyone (not Google affliated) explain to me where Google's data really comes from in their Keyword Tool? Is it at all based on organic search? Or only on Google Ads related data? I know there was some controversy back in June '10 and the Google remedied the return of suggested keywords but I can't seem to get a clear answer (other than from the Google blog itself) whether the search volumes returned are truly indicative of organic search. Am I relying on the wrong tool? Do those more savvy than I only rely on the keyword tool for PPC research. Please help! I'm obsessing over my numbers here. 🙂
