Is Google having trouble determining between two of my brand sites
-
I have a couple brand sites that our company uses and a couple of weeks ago one started to suddenly show up in the #1 position while searching for the other site via its brand.
If I search for "collegexpress" our other site careersandcolleges.com is in the #1 possition. If I search for "collegexpress.com" it shows carrersandcolleges.com's title and description but links to www.collegexpress.com
Could I have something messed up or is google confused with our two sites? In the past I am told that CollegeXpress referred to the careersandcolleges.com page but that has been there for many many years and this SERP change only started to show the first week in march of this year. I looked and there are a handfull of anchor text links from external sites using some form of the "CollegeXpress" brand linking to www.careersandcolleges.com but not that many, and they are not new.
If I do a search the other way for "careersandcolleges" I see it correctly return is own site #1 but www.collegexpress.com is shown to me as #3.
I checked and we dont have any redirects or mod rewrites between the two sites. They are on two different IPs
Any help that can point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Oh, sorry - didn't realize those two pages were different. Can Google crawl the members page? I'm not completely clear where the ref= version is coming from.
Actually, I missed something. You have both the root ("/") version and the "/home" version being indexed, but the root version is cached as your other site. This could indicate that Google is connecting them. This is the cache of CollegeXpress, and it's the Careers and Colleges page:
I thought I had ruled this issue out, but apparently not. I'm not clear if Google thinks they're duplicated (which I'm not really seeing to be the case) or if there are some weird redirects or cross-linking causing the problem. I've seen this happen once or twice, but usually when sites were heavily duplicated.
-
Do I have to worry about putting a rel canonical between two pages that are not that similar? Our members home page has a lot more links to content and the "Home" page basically has the CTA for registration.
-
I see it now, collegexpress.com is 301ed to http://www.collegexpress.com/?ref=collegexpress.com. I will have to change that to get red of the ?ref=collegexpress.com.
Good call on the brand name as well. Since it is semi unique it shouldnt take much.
-
Can't tell why it's happening, but run CollegeXpress through this header checker:
http://tools.seobook.com/server-header-checker/
You should see a 301-redirect to an odd referrer code. It might be only happening to crawlers or it could be for new visitors (I think I saw it once, but then couldn't replicate it).
If you can update the old links, even though there are only a few of them, that should help. Since it's a unique brand name, even a handful of links with exact anchor text could be boosting the wrong site quite a bit.
-
Thanks for the input Peter, we have some very old links out there that we are in the process of reaching out to. We are trying to get everyone to change the links to point at the correct site.
Can you explain a little more about the 301 to ref=collegexpress.com? I dont see that or think that I have that setup anywhere. I am still pretty new to SEO as this was dumped on me in January.
The weakening of CollegeXpress and the existing strength of careersandcolleges really does look like what is happening here.
All of your answers really make sense and I appreciate the time you took to answer. Thank you very much.

I agree with Phil that I'd canonical that home-page - I don't think it's the whole problem, but parameter blocking in GWT is inconsistent, in my experience. For something that important, I'd want a stronger signal. I'm also not clear on why your doing a 301-redirect to ref=collegexpress.com when a crawler hits the site - it just seems like an unnecessary step that could weaken your home-page.
Although careersandcolleges.com isn't targeting "collegexpress" on-page, you do seem to be using it in inbound anchor text. For example:
http://home.epix.net/~captclint/schools.html
This sets up conflicting cues for Google, and since the Careers and Colleges domain is a bit stronger, it could be enough to cause you some problems. I'd make sure that brand anchor text is isolated, as much as possible.
In some rare cases we'll see Google canonicalize two domains, if they think the content is too similar. I'm not seeing any evidence of that here, though. Both domains are ranking, so that suggests that either the Collegexpress domain is being weakened somehow or Collegesandcareers is overpowering it.

"For #3 we recently added the URL parameter ref in Webmaster Tools to crawl the representative URL and ref= should have no effect."
It's still good practice to use rel canonical in case incoming links from other domains get counted for a single page rather than one for each of the following:
"For #2 /home is really a Member's landing page. It isnt what we want to display since there arent any CTA for registration."
If you want all search's to go to the true homepage, you could also put a rel canonical tag on the member's landing page telling search engines to send all link juice (PageRank) to the true homepage. The downside is that the member's landing page will not be included in search results.
Other websites just user scripts or redirects that change the when a user is logged in or not. For example, twitter, SEOmoz...

Thanks Phillip.
For #3 we recently added the URL parameter ref in Webmaster Tools to crawl the representative URL and ref= should have no effect. I also noticed that we didnt have www.collegexpress.com in our sitemap at the same time. I added it and resubmitted it to be crawled. It has not yet been indexed.
For #2 /home is really a Member's landing page. It isnt what we want to display since there arent any CTA for registration. How else can I tell Google that www.collegexpress.com is the place we want to use as our home page.
-
It looks like the link juice for your collegexpress site is being spread. Here is what i see in the SERP:
#2 - http://www.collegexpress.com/home
#3 - http://<cite>www.collegexpress.com/?ref=logo</cite>
Number 3 can be fixed to a root domain by using rel="canonical" tags
As for number 2, Google thinks that is a more relevant place to send users for "collegexpress", so maybe you should make that the homepage.

Google Contacting Clients in an Adwords MCC?!
I am curious if this has happened to others and if so if you were able to resolve it. Today a client forwarded an email that went to a client account and we were in no way copied on it. This is a client that spends in the 6 figures with us and I was shocked to read (Any bold or italics I have added): Hi *****, My name is Jimmy Morrow and I am an Account Strategist at Google on our Agency Team. Your account was recently selected for free dedicated support this quarter and I will be your new point of contact at Google for all things AdWords. We can go over a few housekeeping things I noticed, broader strategy, and some betas that would be a good fit. Please let me know when you have time for a 20-30 minute phone call when we can go over the accounts and make a plan for working together this quarter. Thanks and just let me know a time that works best for you! Best, Jimmy To me, they have essentially gone around us and with the "housekeeping" and "beta" comments sought to make us look either incapable and/or uninformed. We are Google Partners, etc. and we have clients in our MCC for Adwords. I have never seen an occasion where Google blatantly tried to steal the client as it appears is happening here. This is a client who heretofore had NEVER used Adwords and they have been in business since before there was a Google or an Internet. We brought them to Adwords about 6 - 8 months ago!!! They are spending 6 figures on Adwords and I am ready to pull them out and spend the money elsewhere. We sent emails from our UK and our Houston office and no response from lil ole Jimmy. Our UK team has tried calling Google and nothing and then Chatting with them and we can get nothing. This is a client who has a lot of faith in our abilities based on many things we have done for them that worked and they are the kind of client that let's us know when issues arise. So, they are not going to switch and that is not the issue. The issue is Google acted as if they wanted to embrace agencies and if that is so, why then try to back door them? I hope to hear from others who are handling PPC with Google. Thanks a ton. Robert

Brand Name Cratering - possible N-SEO or Black Hat Attacks
Hello to the Moz Community, Let me start by saying, we are not an SEO company. We are the in-house agency for our parent corp, and the 7 companies in their portfolio. We manage their PPC and other digital items. None of the companies use an SEO company. Their "SEO strategy" is to not have one. They internally post on their own Social Media account, their own Blog, and send out their own Press Releases (which we help write the copy sometimes). One of the accounts encountered a very bizarre, and serious ranking problem around Dec 25th-30th. In the past when you Googled the company's brand name you would get 5-6 pages of internal content show up at the very Top of the results. Pages like Home Page, Blog Home, Contact Us, About Us, Client Reviews Page, etc. (core pages). There were then several other non core pages that would show up in the Top 20 results (my recollection is they controlled about 12-14 of the Top 20 results for the brand name). Unfortunately, around Dec. 25th this all cratered. And the only internal page that would display when you Googled the brand name was the Home Page (totally gone; even checking 100 rankings deep). So the question we have spend weeks trying to figure out is, what in the heck happened? We got together with the company to find out any and all possible changes or things could of happened since the first of December, which could have contributed to this cratering. Here is what we found: #1 The company made an acquisition of a smaller competitor in 2014. Around Dec. 10th they sent out a great press release announcing the acquisition. Since the press release was involving someone in the TV/radio advertising agency industry it was very popular (the best release they ever put out). The release was picked up by over 100 high page rank local TV stations, all across the U.S. (along with the normal companies that pick up online releases). The headline of the release was "Brand Name Reviews Assets of TV Ad Agency Competitor." Most of the stations that picked it up placed "Do not follow" links, but it was still an amazingly successful release. #2 Around Dec. 15th this 8 year old company received their first negative "client review." The review was not from a real client though, it was posted on Rip-Off report by a fake client, the Internet Mafia (reputation management co.) or a former employee/contractor. The posting was deliberately optimized. The URL and the Title Tag contained all sort of words like "Reviews" "Complaints" the "Domain Name," and the Company Brand Name (whoever did it, knew what they were doing). #3 Towards the end of December and into January the company received 6-8 bizarre root domain links. The links show to of come from domains that were just registered in November/December. Yet the domain name was already voluntarily forfeited by the beginning of January. Google Webmaster Tools is still showing the links, but when you go to the domain "all it shows is "cannot be found." WHOIS has screenshots of all of them though. Here is one: http://www.domaintools.com/research/screenshot-history/lizardeyephoto.com/ The domains themselves had nothing to do with the type of business this client account operates in, but the information after the / contained partial pieces of the company brand name. Here is an example: http://www.martygraveyard.com/buying-inexpensive-vehicles-at-on-line-community-automobile-auctions/ I personally don't think 6-8 new root domains could crater a website with 290 root domains (and 1500 links), but maybe those domains/sites are somehow "cloaked;" and they are actually showing bad information to the bots/spiders, but us humans can't see it? I honestly am not educated enough on the subject to know... #4 In mid January, three of the brand name pages returned: Home Page, About Us, Blog Home. However, the other pages are nowhere to be found. The companies Contact Us page, Client Reviews page (which used to rank 2nd), and all of the other Top 20 pages are totally gone. They are still indexed if you do a "site:brandname.com" search, but they won't show up when you Google the brand name. #5 Search results are almost identical with Bing and Google. So, here is the million dollar question: was our client's Brand Name deliberately attacked via an N-SEO Black Hat attack, in an effort to get it their internal pages to drop out of the rankings? Or did Google and Bing incorrectly issue some sort of partial penalty on certain pages due to the amazing success (and them believing it was some sort of link buying scheme) of the Press Release that was sent out at the beginning of December? If you read to the bottom of this, I am grateful for you doing so. Thanks in advance for anyone who tries to help us and our in-house client. Jake

What can i do to regain top 3 for local map listings if I already created a bunch of citation link to my site?
I got hit by a penguin refresh on Oct 5th and lost over 10 #1 rankings. I'm currently #4 on the places listing for my main keyword and really trying to regain top 3 position. I created a bunch of local citation with matching info and really piped out my map listing since it is 100% complete. I'm quite stumped on how to further optimize my map listing to where i can hit top 3 positions. Does anyone have any recommendations on this issue? Thanks Sam

Impact on Global SEO of Losing One Regional Site
Hi, Plans are in place to have an affiliate company take over the marketing, sale, and distribution of our products in one region of the 35 that we currently operate in. The regional site is responsible for 10% of our overall global traffic. 26% of the revenue to that specific site comes from organic search traffic. The question is whether the loss of this traffic and these pages will have any negative impact on our global SEO status?

Has anyone had problems with thier google maps page after the google plus intergration?
About a month ago Google contacted one of my clients to inform them that the Google places is discontinued and their Google plus page will be the new Google places. They gave my client an $100 adwards credit for adwords express so their location will still show up for their business name during the change from Google places to Google plus.. When you type in the business in a local area or on a GPS now.. It is no where to be found. You have to know the address to get directions or go there on a mobile devices. The Google plus page for all of these locations is not currently showing up either. I have contacted Google and Once again something has been released without implementing it correctly. No one seems to know what is going on... after talking to three people. Does anybody know what is going on ???? This is a huge deal when being a local company.

Strategies for getting more listings on first of google
We have a client who is looking to increase the number of results on page 1 of google for their brand name to essentially force some historical negative comments off page 1 of google. I am thinking of things like a twitter page, Facebook page, YouTube page etc. plus optimising their site to try and get multiple pages on page 1. Does any one have experience of doing the same sort of thing?

Does a +1 or Share appear in SERPs site-wide, or only for the page that is specifically shared?
Take the example Danny Sullivan posted: http://searchengineland.com/how-being-friends-on-google-leads-to-better-rankings-87376 In this case, Ford shared www.ford.com, and its friends and followers see that in the SERPs. Hoever, how does that compare with, say, sharing http://www.ford.com/cars/mustang/? Does the entire domain reap the benefit, or just that page? Would people see a "Ford shared this" beneath a search result pointing to ford.com (the home page), even if Ford had only shared this specific interior page? Or is it too soon to know for sure how this is all going to work?
